ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! today is premiering the new outdoor artwork for The Spirit, opening in theaters on January 16, 2009. There are three posters that go in a series, showing the silhouette of The Spirit! Note also the URL included on the three posters, MyCityScreams.com.

Click the posters below for a hi-res version of the series!

Adapted from the legendary comic book series created by Will Eisner, The Spirit is a classic action-adventure-romance written for the screen and directed by genre-twister Frank Miller (creator of "300" and "Sin City"). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he's going to wipe out Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; Plaster of Paris (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; Lorelei (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and Morgenstern (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop. Then of course, there's Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She's the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him? In the vein of Batman Begins and Sin City, The Spirit takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride with a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

Thats a damn cool poster.

Posted by: Josh on April 3, 2008 at 13:05:53

That a cool campaign. But it looks too much like Sin City II.

Posted by: Nando on April 3, 2008 at 13:07:19

damn I wonder if their making the movie black and white like sin city.

If they do, it would be a total rip off.

So far so good on the marketing makes you want to know more. Hopefully Frank Miller does'nt take too many liberties with it and change what made the character great.

Oh yeah!!! second!!!!

I agree (and we'll find out soon at the NYC comicon) if this is a Sin City 2 well then I'll be disappointed.

they shouldv'e made this movie before sin city, because the black and white look would go perfect with the atmosphere of "The Spirit"however,as stated below, people would compare it too much to sin city...made they should try just dulling the colors(adding grey)or maybe the colors could be crisp before the spirit dies and become dull after he comes back to life(kinda like they did in the "Wizard of Oz"

DAMNNNNNN!!!!!! These posters look 'F'ing awesome !!!!!

Posted by: Zyclonis on April 3, 2008 at 13:27:19

Well Frank Miller Co-Directed and Created Sin City. He's Directing The Spirit so it cant really be a rip-off of the previous. I guess he just wants to make all his movies look the same.

Looks the shadow.

Posted by: Mike_Weezy on April 3, 2008 at 13:37:16

looks like old school comic noir...wont be sin city 2 but will have elements like every other comic movie thats shared one similarity or another

Posted by: Hellboy on April 3, 2008 at 13:40:20

very COOL!!!

Posted by: Manhattan on April 3, 2008 at 13:44:46

love the iconic feel to this poster. not to mention that tie.

Posted by: GLKEL on April 3, 2008 at 13:47:47

Interesting.....but I really hope it isn't done like Sin City. I'll be dissapointed if they do the film that way...

Wonder what this will be rated....hopefully PG-13.

b-b-b-*****in'!

Posted by: kevlar on April 3, 2008 at 14:16:43

i love frank miller. period. he is a visionary and i will appreciate anything that he puts on film or paper. this wont be a rip-off because he is the only person that films in his own style!! (p.s. is he coming out with a new batman comic book?)

Posted by: brandon on April 3, 2008 at 14:17:16

honestly, I wouldn't mind this film being like Sin City. I mean ain't that the way we distinct Miller's films from everyone else?

Black and white or comicy like Sin City or 300.

Looks great!

Posted by: G Cap on April 3, 2008 at 14:26:25

@Kevlar

He already writes All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, with art by Jim Lee. If you're referring to a Batman book that he writes AND does the art for, then I don't know off-hand.

Posted by: Darknightwatchmen on April 3, 2008 at 14:27:42

If it looks like Sin City so be it. Eisner approved of what he did with the comic so I'd guess he'll do the same for the movie.
Great posters, familiar yet original.

@ kevlar - He is working on a new Batman comic called Holy Terror! that he says will put Bats up against Al-Queda. Still waiting on it, but the artwork is great!

GLKEL, why would ou want the film rated PG-13? In my opinion, that rating is just a marketing ploy that causes directors to make compromises that don't need to be made. The line that separates PG-13 from R is so thin and ill-defined at times it's hardly worth bothering with. And the box office has proven that films of this type with an R rating can be profitable, not to mention the sales of the obligatory "Unrated" DVD release. I honestly don't understand the mindset anymore.

I have to say, there are a lot of cool posters out there, oh wait, by cool i mean BORING...but this...this is not one of them this is ACTUALLY cool. God damn does this speak to the comic book generation. This got me so excited it almost made me push up my glasses and talk about Magic the Gathering in my mom's basement!

lol Mitch

Posted by: Asian ninja on April 3, 2008 at 14:51:54

I think it should look like sin city 2. It's such a great look, he SHOULD use it where it is appropriate.
But these posters, there are three of them in a row to make up one? That's awesome, I can't WAIT to see them at comicon!

Posted by: batfan86 on April 3, 2008 at 15:02:46

" is he coming out with a new batman comic book?"

I hope not. Year One is the only time Miller got Batman right.

Posted by: sytrus on April 3, 2008 at 15:04:58

interesting poster, can be better i hope.
It's like sin city. Great cast.
can't wait, for me this movie,it is very more interesting than tdk.

anyone who said it being black and white would be a 'rip off' of Sin City needs to do the world favor and throw themselves off a really high building or at the very least do the world a favor and not have kids.

Seriously people have used black and white films for years, either because they have to or because they want to. It would be FAR from ripping off Sin City.
