Tobey Maguire Hopes to Evolve Peter Parker
Source:Boston Globe
November 29, 2009

Speaking to The Boston Globe, Spider-Man 4 star Tobey Maguire addressed the rumors he was reluctant to return to the role.

"It's not that I was reluctant," he said. "For me, it's a big process to decide whether or not to do a role.... I have to want to wake up in the morning and feel like I can't wait to get to work. I've got to feel OK about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It's a big commitment."

Maguire added that he needed to feel there was a fresh story about Spider-Man worth telling.

"Hopefully I'll be able to evolve the character in a new direction. He'll still be Peter Parker, but I hope I can move him forward a bit and take him to a place where there will be new challenges for me as an actor."

Spider-Man 4 is scheduled for a May 5, 2011 release in conventional and IMAX theaters.

reboot please, hold the dance numbers and awkward montages. Seriously killing my childhood favorite...

Yes lets recast the main role of a guy who looks and acts like peter parker. As well as a good actor to boot for the 4th film of the franchise.

did your mom drop you on your head as a baby?

Posted by: truth hurts ! on November 29, 2009 at 01:50:22

i agree with nelson

sure tobey is getting up there aga wise but he still looks like pete n acts like him

the only recast for him i see is the peter guy from heroes

Posted by: static on November 29, 2009 at 01:51:15

he looks good in brothers....
i at least want him him to do the smart assy comebacks to the bad guys n the makin fun of them while hes jumpin around

Tobey Maguire sucks as Spider-Man. Spider-Man is supposed to be cocky-funny. That's the best part of the comics of Spider-Man versus other heroes. Spider-Man makes fun of the villains while defeating them.

Even the cartoons got the humor right. Spider-Man was kind of like Eddie Murphy (back when he was funny) in Beverly Hills Cop 1 (doing action and making fun of the bad guys). Tobey Doesn't have the range, he is to up tight. I never laughed once when he made a joke as Spider-Man. To tell you the truth he sounded like an idiot "TRYING" to be funny.

IF YOU GREW UP ON ONLY THE MOVIES THAN YOU ARE GOING TO DEFEND TOBEY. IF YOU ARE A REAL FAN OF SPIDER-MAN COMICS THAN YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!!

Bring in someone with actual range like a younger Robert Downey Jr. who can do both comedy and serious drama. Drop Tobey and watch Spider-Man 4 make more than all the previous ones.

Also, Kirsten Dunst sucks as MJ. She is supposed to be a super-model with a heart of gold THAT WE WOULD ALL WANT ONE NIGHT WITH. I'm not Brad Pitt with the ladies, but Dunst is a one night stand for me. Dunst looks like a zombie and her performance as MJ reminds me of nails on chalk board.

RAMI, SONY AND MARVEL,

GROW A PAIR. Kirsten Dunst is just as snobby as Toby so replace them both. I remember how arrogant those two losers were during the press on Spider-Man 3. Bring in more charasmatic actors who look and can act the parts. Oh, and Sam Rami Kirsten Dunst would have dissed you and made fun of you if you were back in High School at the so your goal of getting a humble actress was lost. She may kiss up to you know but that is because you are in charge. Find a hotter actress who actualy looks hot and has a humble persona.

Ya Tobey evolve the character in a new direction, How about Marvel zombies?

Posted by: Socrates on November 29, 2009 at 02:08:05

Fixed misspellings:

RAMI, SONY AND MARVEL,

GROW A PAIR. Kirsten Dunst is just as snobby as Tobey, so replace them both. I remember how arrogant those two losers were during the press on Spider-Man 3 (how those idiots think they are so beyond Spider-Man). Bring in more charismatic actors who look and can act the parts.

Sam Rami,

Kirsten Dunst would have dissed you and made fun of you if you were back in High School at the same age. So, your goal of getting a humble actress was lost! She is that chick who is almost hot and has hot friends and an snobby attitude. She may kiss up to you now but that is because you are in charge. Find a hotter actress who actually looks hot and has a humble persona. That's the real MJ.

Anyone who thinks Tobey Maguire is "a guy who looks and acts like peter parker" clearly does NOT know the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He was acceptable in the first movie...but after the second and third I came to realize that this double-chinned cry baby is not the Peter Parker/Spidey I love and grew up with.

Posted by: spider-head on November 29, 2009 at 02:10:32

reboots suck. (except hulk, but that was an exception)

dont recast. tobeys great, recasting would be dumb and confusing as hell.

Posted by: rizad on November 29, 2009 at 02:18:15

There way i see it is either:
1.Tobey just want an excuse to get a higher paycheck.
2.He's no longer interested playing Spiderman and want better role.I mean actors are like that, they sometimes tired or bored of playing the same role like James Caan in LAS VEGAS.He evenly never watch himself in tv.Hmmmm.I wonder how the situation will be if Freddie Prinze Jr.originally played the role.
3.Tobey just behaving like Megan Foxx but not directed.
4.This just a stunt to keep the buzz or the demand for fans to keep Tobey as spiderman.See no.1.
5.This one i like.Tobey just gives a clue/spoiler for the next plot of spiderman in which 2 peter parker with him and another actor and involves a villain that can change reality.Anybody know that kind of villain in the comics.

I once heard that Jake Gyllin-da*** wanted to play spider-man. Back around The Donnie Darko era, I totally supported this, even when talks for spidey 3 started. Not so sure now, but I was never happy with T.M.'s P.Parker. As for Dunst, gve her the mushroom tattoo she deserves and send her to sit in the corner wearing a tall pointy hat. I hate her. I wish I could seduce her only to tear her heart out so she cries herself in to a state of toothless obeasity. "This is Spider-Man 3, not Mary Jane 3!"

Posted by: marvel nerd on November 29, 2009 at 02:20:14

you know what socrates dont blame tobey.blame the writers.I bet he would like to make fun of the villans but the writers seem to forgot all of the making fun of villans thing.tobey makes a realy good spidey

Posted by: Spikewolf on November 29, 2009 at 02:21:40

Topher Grace would have been a better choice for Spiderman and Megan Fox as MJ.

Posted by: geekradio on November 29, 2009 at 02:23:08

Depp as Pete, Jolie as MJ. This will solve EVERYTHING!

I'm serious.

Not

I say f@#k it! Let Raimi and Maguire do whatever they want with the character. Can't possibly be any worse than what the writers at Marvel have been doing to poor Spidey and his supporting cast for the past few years.

I empathize with all you guys who say Tobey sucks and 'Spider-Man should be' all like this or like that... but suck it up and face it guys, our Spidey had been dead since BND and was replaced by an incompetent, sideways Peter Pan version of himself... hmmm... actually that sounds perfect for Tobey to me. :P

Posted by: milojthatch on November 29, 2009 at 03:17:33

I agree with Spider-Head, reboots suck! Except for Hulk, I'm sick of them.

I think people are far to fast to cry "Re-Boot" just as soon as they see one little thing they don't like. If Hollywood really did this as much as many of the fan boys wanted, we would never get to a second film becuase it would always be a new re-boot!

Posted by: Batchat on November 29, 2009 at 03:31:11

@ milojthatch

Dude...Batman Begins, Casino Royale, Star Trek.. all reboots. Name a couple reboots that have sucked recently besides punisher (that's too easy).

At the very least Maguire knows that he needs to play Peter Parker differently, maybe he can kinda redeem himself. He did an ok job in SM1. But I really think it's Raimi and his writers that need to man up.

Posted by: Tobey on November 29, 2009 at 03:46:50

No more sappy love-triangles. I'm not against love triangles, but Raimi executes them poorly and it's just beating a dead horse now. If there's a cheesy dance scene I'll get out of my chair, leave the theatre, never look back, and never buy anything related to the Spider-Man movies again. I shouldn't have wasted money buying Spider-Man 3 on blu ray. I can't even sit through ten minutes of it anymore.

Toby Maguire is likely to be remembered, at least by me, as the 'everyguy' actor who became the 'everyguy' hero. Peter Parker is a fascinating character, and I'm sure there were more than a few nice looking medium build character-actors tested back at the start. Toby got the role because, I think, he tested well. He seems like a guy you could tease, a guy she might love, and ultimately a guy by which you wouldn't mind being saved. His face is emotive, and in the suit, his posture is very Spidey.

Do I think he embodies Spidey like Chris Reeve embodied Superman? No, of course not; he doesn't have it ALL.

Did he write Spidey 3? No. So wherever he wants to go from there, I'm willing to hear him out.

Kirsten Dunst isn't MJ. At al.
Why, you ask?
Well...it's NOT because she has the eyes of a caged killer (because she certainly does). NOT because she hasn't the sort of face that adorns a billboard in any NYC I know. And doubly-NOT because she isn't an effectively emotive actor. None of the above!!

It's because the film version of MJ is comprised of equal parts THREE lovely ladies from the comic: she's Liz Allen, Peter's high school crush, Flash Thompson's girlfriend. She's Mary Jane Watson, the mysterious redhead, party girl, model. And she's Gwen Stacy, the lovely College sweetheart and his first love.

Kirsten's character in the films draws heavily upon the first and last, and only sparingly on the character whose name she uses--the career path is similar, but nothing more. MJ is a party girl with the makings of a super-model. She SCARES Peter because she'll say and do almost anything, possessing the sort of confidence and abandon he only enjoys behind a mask. She calms down considerably into her late-20's and early 30's, but she's still the hot set-up he never really got rid of. She's a wraith, a flake, the kind of chick who toys with guys because she gets a rush from it...but for some reason, she can't bring herself to toy with Peter.

Kirsten Dunst wasn't written a part that resembles the above...so since she isn't really Mary Jane, it's redundant to expose her as being an ineffective choice for the character.

Posted by: actualfan on November 29, 2009 at 04:31:00

Toby could evolve the character by stop portraying him. I wish he was not already cast as Venom, but Topher Grace could have done a MUCH better job. As for MJ?..there are so many choices, Dunst seemed like a *****y girlfriend rather than a love interest. Raimi could have skipped Venom altogether and done it right by having Lizard as the 3rd baddy. I mean you mention Conners on the first movie, you actually show him in the second, it would have made total sense to have him as Lizard in SM3, but what do I know. I only grew up with Spiderman like most people in this world

It's not Tobey's fault for the lack of quips. It's the writers. If you've played the SM games based off the movies you'll see that he can play a witty SM.

I do agree somewhat, about Spidey being more humorous. But sometimes it does get to be a little annoying, especially when he's fighting these supervillains and he's in serious trouble. I understand that's his way of dealing with fear, but it takes away from the seriousness of not only the villain, but the situation. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to see him be more funny and throw out more quips, but I can understand why the films choose not to go that route.

Some battles were too serious for quips. And doing that would have ruined them. The final battle GG. Pretty serious and pretty violent. The bank fight with Doc Ock. Worried about Aunt May, he wisecracks before May is taken hostage. The train fight with Doc Ock. He is worried about MJ, and deadly serious. Second Sandman fight, he is out for revenge, deadly serious, but he wisecracks with Sandman in first fight before he knows he killed Ben.

To those complaining about Tobey Maguire not being an accurate Peter Parker. Yeah, because Christian Bale is the EXACT likeness of Bruce Wayne. Please, the only problem is he needed to be alittle more sarcastic and witty as Spidey but that's a problem in the writing not the actor that portrays him. You people are probably the same people that defend Bay's portrayal of Transformers. Hypocrites

Mary Elizabeth Winstead for MJ.
