Source:Heat Vision
October 7, 2009

Heat Vision is reporting that Gary Ross will write the script for Venom, Columbia Pictures' "Spider-Man" spin-off, and may direct as well!

Ross is already writing Spider-Man 4 for the studio.

The site says that the studio had no comment on Ross writing the project and whether Topher Grace would reprise the role from the third film.

Avi Arad and Marvel are producing the movie.

Was not so much disapppointed with Venom's depiction in SM3 (aside from the casting) so much as I was disappointed with the screen time. That was an even bigger rip off than Two-Face's 5 minutes and 2 kills in TDK.

But I got some hope for this,

regardless of how the film would be, how do you bring back a character who clearly DIED in the last one?

Posted by: Venom on October 7, 2009 at 17:56:07

Yeah , a venom movie will be a good break for the bored spidey fans. As long as they keep it true to the original comic book character, i am all for it.
Thanks wakigo for not saying first.
and Sohi420, dont u feel like a jackass ? :))

I agree no Topher, if they need to, he was a Junior so make his dad be in jail for whatever reason. If at the funeral for Jr, have the symbiote latch on to Brock Sr who is a big strong guy who works with heavy weights.

If not, we can forgive the Spidey 3 Venom version and just re-write him as the big Brock/Venom we love. I just have this feeling we will see Venom again in a Spidey movie.. maybe in 5 or 6.

Different universe just like the comics! Duh!

Posted by: MDI on October 7, 2009 at 18:01:53

I love Venom, but not for the same reason that most people do. (Because hes a cool dude that wears black and looks evil.)

No, I think Venom is badass because in the comics and cartoon series he was always this like ultimate rival that basically knew everything about Peter Parker, but at the same time he wasn't really a bad guy..he just happened to hate Spider Man because he kind of saw him as a villain.

Venom on his own though...eh..I don't see it as that interesting.

It sucks that Spider Man 3 had to **** his character up so bad.

Hopefully the spin-off will at LEAST have him say "WE ARE VENOM" once..at least once. Please? :P

@ MDI, I think the duo-personality for Venom is important and true to his character. He needs to saw "We" more than once. I hope they treat Venom similar to Gollum and Smeagal from Lord of the Rings, a duo mind set. Venom should be creepy and odd but not pure evil. We get why he hates Spidey but without Spidey in the film, what's the angle I wonder. Lethal Protector is the only story I can think of them doing, I fear when they just want to write up a whole new story, that's when things go crazy.

i dont' see why sm3 venom was a disgrace tot eh comics. other than the screen time i saw nothing wrong with him.

My only complaint about the Venom story in "Spider-Man 3" was that it was apparently forced into the film by former Marvel CEO Avi Arad, who pressured Sam Raimi into adding the character. Originally, the third film was just going to focus on Harry and the Sandman, but Arad was worried such a story wouldn't be a enough of a draw. The whole "black suit" and Venom stuff should've been saved for its own entry in the main franchise.

The concept for Spider-Man 3 sounded good. The delivery was where it fell apart. I agree they should have developed the character much more with him speaking in the third person.

Topher should reprise the role. Carnage should be in it. they should do before and after events from Spider-Man 3 and flashbacks from the movie.

Cant see how this is gonna be remotely good.

I was pleasantly surprised with Topher's performance; he didn't look nearly as skinny and weak as I thought he would. he looked like Venom. I am looking forward to this; I think it has great potential.

Wow! Will they introduce Carnage in this movie?

Posted by: darkness_grad06 on October 7, 2009 at 19:21:19

I loved the way venom look in SM3.. But his screen time and character development is what screwed it all up.. Hopefully they will do venom some justice with this movie

Posted by: Mrpaul on October 7, 2009 at 19:22:54

I'd say go into more detail as far as what the symbiote can do, there's so much more to that alien ooze.

I SPEAK ON BEHALF OF ALL FANS

MAKE THEM GOOD...ALL OF THEM.

Posted by: MDI on October 7, 2009 at 19:27:55

@Stan

He basically had no similarity to the Venom we all know and love, aside from the abilities. There was just so much wrong with him that I won't even begin to list it all. In general he was just a really cliche and boring villain that was totally unnecessary to the movie.

@Hiro

I agree. And I think having Venom fight against the other Symbiotes could be awesome if they take that route.

Posted by: Almeida on October 7, 2009 at 19:33:45

just gonna say this...i thought Topher did a good job as Venom

Posted by: Han on October 7, 2009 at 19:48:42

There we go. So... what has Gary written that's good again?

Posted by: Deadpool on October 7, 2009 at 19:51:04

I thought Topher did a good job as Venom. He's a pretty good actor. I wouldn't mind seeing him as Venom again... I wouldn't mind if they got someone else too, either way it's cool

When he said "I think my spidey sense is tingling, if you know what I mean" when he was holding Mary jane, it reminded me of the character he played in That 70's Show. It was funny. Love That 70's Show btw...

I think the main reason they had Topher Grace was so they could have a physical double for Tobey Maguire. If played properly, there could have been a good "mistaken identity" thing going on, with people mistaking Venom for Spidey. However, with the tiny bit of screen time Venom had, there was no time for it. So, for that, I can at least see the reasoning for Topher Grace. With all that being said, Topher Grace didn't act like a psycho who gets a symbiote.
That's something a lot of people forget: the symbiote was driven insane by Eddie Brock, not the other way around. Spider Man never had self control issues when he wore the suit; that was just added for the cartoon. The rejection of the symbiote by Spider Man combined with the hatred of Spider Man by Eddie Brock is what made Venom, not the symbiote itself. There have been several other symbiotes used for good in several stories, including a former guard who got five at once, and now Toxin as well. The symbiote in itself is not evil.
If they add more history of the symbiotes, it might be an interesting movie. I personally would like for them to explain how a symbiote that is vulnerable to fire survived entry into the atmosphere in a meteor, and how a meteor landing made practically no impact.

I´ll watch the movie, sure.
But I´m a lot more interested in Spider-man 4, I want it as good as Spider-man 2!

Posted by: Han on October 7, 2009 at 20:28:17

"I think the main reason they had Topher Grace was so they could have a physical double for Tobey Maguire."

That's not even necessary. Venom is supposed to look bigger and more frightening than Spider-Man. His formidable size makes him even scarier. That's not the case in Spider-Man 3.

The could always use Mac Gargan as Venom in a spin off movie. However my bet would be the sqiggly bit that was left of Venom in SM3 will kind of grow and reform Eddie Brock. Dont forget they strictly speaking re grew another Peter Parker in the comics ( The Other ), although not exactly the same, there is no reason not to do similar with Venom in the film > I think it's obvious he will go down the Anti hero route, a film with the main chracter as a villian wouldnt be commercially Viable ( I bet Magneto movie never gets made ) , So lethal Protector is a good bet, and Carnage seems like a good villian. The only problem with Carnage, Is that he's a serial killer and extremley violent, and i fear he will be watered down to appeal to a wider auidience
