IMAX Corporation and Columbia Pictures today announced that the highly-anticipated action-adventure Spider-Man 4, will be released to IMAX(R) theatres simultaneously with the film's worldwide release on May 5, 2011. The fourth installment of the successful "Spider-Man" franchise, based on the Marvel Comicbook character, will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience. The film will be distributed by Columbia Pictures domestically and by Sony Pictures Releasing International overseas.

To date, the "Spider-Man" motion pictures have generated more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office receipts.

"The last two 'Spider-Man' releases have been available in IMAX theaters, and we're very much looking forward to our return to a wider IMAX theatre network with this exciting new chapter in the continuing adventures of Spider-Man," said Rory Bruer, President, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. "The addition of so many new IMAX locations will give even more fans of Spider-Man an opportunity to experience the action and adventure in a unique way."

"'Spider-Man' continues to be one of the world's most popular motion picture franchises, and we are very excited to include the latest chapter as part of our 2011 slate," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "Our network has grown significantly and we continue to roll-out new theatres virtually every week, giving more moviegoers the opportunity to experience the movie in IMAX."

"We're so excited to once again work with our friends at Columbia Pictures, Sony and Marvel to bring this beloved superhero back to IMAX theatres," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "The 'Spider-Man' franchise has been so important to the growth of our network and fan base over the years and we're certainly looking forward to re-teaming with the entire cast and production team to bring this next chapter to moviegoers worldwide."

Spider-Man 4 will reunite director Sam Raimi with stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. The screenplay is currently being adapted by Gary Ross. Producers are Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, Todd Black and Grant Curtis. Executive producers are Stan Lee, Todd Hallowell and Josh Donen.

The IMAX release will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR(R) (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

i agree with the other comments, who gives a flying **** about spidey 4, there's better movies being made..

Go Spidey Go!
I'm sure they can't make the same mistake as Spidey-3 since most hated that movie, so im pretty excited for Spidey-4 :)

Come on lizard!

Bleh, I never cared for Raimi's take on Spider-Man. He leaves out too many core elements.

As long as the corporate fools stay out of it, I think it will be fine.. never was a big fan of the Spiderman movies for the simple fact that McGuire cant pull off the wise cracking funny spidey we all know. The Spectacular Spiderman cartoon Nails the sarcasm. The movies.. not so much.. but Toby does pull off a good dorky Peter.

No more Emo tho.. that was just terrible.. and I hope Venom gets some kind of retribution.. He was just awful.

Poor Toby, by the time they film this he'll be almost a decade older than when he started playing Peter Parker - and he sure is looking older in each movie!

While I don't expect this one to be set a decade past #1, it'd be good if they allowed that #4 happens a solid few years into the Parker-MJ-Spidey thing so that we see they've matured, they're facing responsibilities as adults etc...

Awesome. Can't wait.

Spider-Man 4...hmmmmm. Lizard, Mysterio, Electro, Rhino, Vulture, Kraven, Scorpion, Hobgoblin. Any ONE of those villains would be great to see. Anyone notice I left out Carnage? Yes, well, with how they did Venom...I'd just rather they not even think about doing that one. As well, The Spider clone saga...thingy, let's pray they leave that alone too.

On another note, Avi Arad needs to be completely fired from Marvel. Every Marvel movie he touches or even passes gas near is a piece of crap! 'Nuff said.....

The first two Spider-Man movies weren't that great either. Peter Parker was an annoying wimp. At least in the comics, he develops. But not when Raimi directs. And holy ****, is the dialogue cliché and stupid as hell.

Even though Kirsten Dunst doesn't look like Mary Jane on any level, she returns in Spider-Man 4. Fantastic. I laugh hard.

Imagine how great this would've been in the hands of Marvel Studios.

Gee, I wish there was an IMAX near me! Oh well. I just hope they keep the promise of allowing Sam to keep his vision. And I second the motion of NOT touching Carnage! Sam works best with the classic villains of the 60s and 70s, and he admits that. Let him have what he wants.

all the nay sayers need to shut up and go somewhere else...if u don't like the Spidey franchise anymore than why do u bother commenting on every bit of news update for the futuree films? and honestly complaining over a friggin dance scene that you didn't think was funny becuase your sense of humor sucks? grow a pair and grow up.
Spider-Man films kick @$$. always have , always will

Posted by: Swiz on September 15, 2009 at 11:39:14

my sense of humor doesnt suck...i just dont want my peter park doing a waltz down the Manhattan street...this isnt spiderman the musical...at least not yet

Marry them already. That should have been the premise of Spidey 3: The marriage of Peter Parker going awry with supervillians (Harry Osborn)wreaking havoc. Bring back Doc Ock.

Tommy Lister as Tombstone
Matthew Lillard as Carnage
Derek Mears as Scorpion
Diora Baird as Black Cat
Ben Kingsley as Vulture
Richard Roxburgh as Chameleon
Mark Whalberg as HydroMan
Timothy Olyphant as Hobgoblin
Benicio Del Toro as Morbius
Dwayne Johnson as Rhino Jude Law as Alistair Smythe
Josh Holloway as Shocker
Steve Buscemi as Mysterio
Stephen Dorff as Electro
Gerard Butler as Kraven The Hunter
Jada Pinkett Smith as Calypso Guy
Pearce as Luke Carlyle

I think Derek Mears would make a good Kingpin in a Daredevil reboot as well,if he puts on a bit more weight.

The lizard. 'Nuff said.

KINDA looking forward to this. I hope Marvel uses ILM for the digi Spidey/effects like they did for Iron Man, because Sony's internal dept. sucks with the CGI, Spidey always looks/moves too fake.

Posted by: old fan from the 80s on September 15, 2009 at 11:56:04

in imax yeah, so we can see more clearly all peter's tears and dance moves,

numbers speak for themselves, i didn't like that much the second one, and felt abused by the last one

i gues its just me, 825,000,000 dollars say im
wrong,

i hope all the guys that put their 8 dollars to the pot of gold, for the third one, dont do it this time so we can have a reboot for 6

Posted by: Rico on September 15, 2009 at 12:01:42

No more Emo crap, just One bad guy, no flying surf board... and we're cool!

Posted by: Johny B on September 15, 2009 at 12:03:58

please dont **** it up like spider man 3 im still not over that ****

Posted by: whplash lopez on September 15, 2009 at 12:06:06

yes, i'm looking forward to this very very happy about the news

Posted by: Gonzo on September 15, 2009 at 12:07:06

They need to do better with this one. Enough of the sappy romance stuff, MacGuire looked foolish and ugly when he cried. NO MORE DANCING, I mean what the hell were they thinking with that scene?? CAMPY!!! Bring on the Lizard and enough emotion from spidey. Lets see a confident kickass in the next one.

Posted by: His Cousin Vinny on September 15, 2009 at 12:10:34

Poor Toby, by the time they film this he'll be almost a decade older than when he started playing Peter Parker - and he sure is looking older in each movie!

I agree like trying to pass off a 35 year old Ralph Machio as the Karate Kid!

Posted by: Macroni Tony on September 15, 2009 at 12:13:23

Meh. This franchise with the current creators / actors are over.

Let it rest and Sony sell the rights back to Marvel for a reboot.

Posted by: Climie on September 15, 2009 at 12:15:24

Reboot Spiderman, give venom an OWN movie...not HIS own movie but as a villain, and bring in Carnage or Lizard
