Sony Hires Spider-Man 5 & 6 Writer
August 17, 2009
Variety reports that Sony Pictures has engaged screenwriter James Vanderbilt to write Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6.
Production on Spider-Man 4 will begin early next year for a May 6, 2011 release. Vanderbilt wrote the first draft of the script for the fourth installment. David Lindsay-Abaire was brought on board to do a rewrite, and Gary Ross is now rewriting that script.
The trade adds that director Sam Raimi didn't embrace all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but executives at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have. Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the fifth and sixth movies, which have an interconnected storyline.
It's unclear whether Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will be back for #5 & 6, but if they aren't, Vanderbilt's script would be the blueprint for a franchise reboot.

definitley reboot with a different venom story line that ends up being maximum carnage as a story arc

I was under the impression that Raimi was pretty psyched on doing the new film. I don't necessarily think a reboot is necessary, but if it ups the chances of a spiderman crossover i'm interested. I think reboots seem a little pointless if they can't be a part of the multiverse concept. and I did enjoy the tone of the second spiderman most. I feel we need more of that peter parker and spiderman. More spiderman, less spiderboy.

kick a$$ and bring on the venom movie so people will stop *****ing about spider-man 3 since venom never died and they would no that if they read the comics and the 3rd movie was about learning forgiveness i know its kind've corny but every movie has something to learn:P any way i do hope that there better

i say let the series die

and really stop with the taking off of spider-man' s mask so often like jeez i realize its made of spandex but it doesn't rip that easy and if it does maybe it should be made out of a lower grade of spandex like the biking gear not that really expensive popped out webbing crap because I'm sick of after one hit his costume rips

I'm always game for more Marvel movies.
Just do Ultimate Spider-Man and tie into the Marvel Movieverse with Samuel L. Jackson doing his Nick Fury cameo.

While sidey3 was not good I still think the franchise has been handled well. what I'd really like to see now is some growth. I mean 3 films in and Pete still looks 19. I know Rami is a big fan of the older spidey stories but I want to see a more mature grown up spider-man. It doesn't need to be R or anything and I definitly want him to continue cracking wise. It's just Spidey 1 he gets his powers and deals with that. spidey 2 he looses his powers and deals with that. spidey 3 he gets new (dark) powers and deals with that. I want a movie where he is matured and in his prime. where he feels confident in himself and his abilities to be a hero.

A reboot? Its kinda ridiculous to "reboot" a movie franchise that started less than 10 years ago. *sigh*

I agree with what tmeadows34 is saying.

I blame Avi Arad for making Raimi add Venom to S3, the story could have been great if they focused on Parker, Mary Jane and Sandman. Raimi knows old-school Spiderman and that can be fun again. I just hope they're smart enough to know not to turn Spidey into "the Dark Web." [If I hear one more thing about "dark" DC movies I'll freak.]

Here's what should happen.
Spiderman 4: Conners uses the piece of the symbiote to unlock the regenerative properties of lizards and turns into Lizard. During the transformation, he breaks the beaker containing the symbiote. Lizard runs amok and draws the attention of Kraven the Hunter who comes to New York looking to hunt the ultimate prey, in the process, realizes that Spiderman is actually a better prize, buries him alive and takes his place. At the end, we see the symbiote bond with Cletus Kassidy. Chameleon optional since he ties in with Kraven.
Spiderman 5: Maximum Carnage. Venom comes back (we realize that the symbiote used its camoflauge to escape in Spiderman 3).
Black Cat must make an appearance in one or both movies (preferably both).

i think they should put spidy and wolverine in the avengers movie they have technily been part of the team so why not
and they could still bring back venom just say when the bomb went off the suit pulled eddie away injured but helped heal him
and if you remember there was a little peice of the suit on the grownd the disapperd that could bring on carnage
jackie earl haily = carnage

Cobra if we have to believe the comics then none of the villains died. Or at least have a 'miracle moment'

so happy to hear 4 and 5 could be a reboot.
I love most of the aesthetic of the movies, (albeit almost all the villain's costumes except doc ock's and sandmans were not that good)
but I really don't like any of the casting. None of it seemed right, especially kirsten dunst I think is probably as far from mary jane's character as one can get. Toby Mcguire is too wimpy and he hardly makes any jokes for some reason. and when he does they're not delivered with any tone of arrogance or sarcasm.
eh. glad they're making more movies anyway, hopefully they'll be better than 3, and come out a little quick. it's taking way to freaking long.
That's what I've been asking for...

It states that Raimi didn't embrace all of Vanderbilts ideas. Oh, yeah, sorry Raimi. Vanderbilt probably forgot that Peter's street-dancing montague was pure gold, and a result of Raimi's interpretation of Peter Parker. What did it do? Completely killed the film.
Posted by: thisguy on August 17, 2009 at 01:07:04
peter looked 19?
he looked 40+
we need a young spidey
give us the 16 year old parker and lets watch himgrow to his 30s
Posted by: rocco on August 17, 2009 at 01:07:08
Reboot doesn't mean doing Spider-Man's origin again guys. That wasn't Vanderbilt's idea when he was pitching his ideas for 4 and 5.

Let it die, reboot, wash, rinse, and repeat.

I really wish they would just give the rights back to Marvel. One episode of the Spectacular Spider-man TV show is better than the whole damn trilogy. And maybe get someone to play Spider-man who is under 30.

Go the way of Incredible Hulk, not a reboot but not a direct continuation either. I think we had enough of Raimi's Spider-Man after 4. His is not the wise-cracking hero we all know and love.
Posted by: Spanish39 on August 17, 2009 at 01:17:35
franchise reboot? wtf? I wonder if that means restart or like trilogy 2? Either way they will probably suck. Raimi should stick to what he does best....horror! Drag me to hell was good.
Posted by: DeadFox on August 17, 2009 at 01:29:50
If they do, plan on rebooting Spider-man. Please for the love of everything that is Holy!!!...No Disney channel esque actors!!!! That would suck!!

Oh, well this sounds lovely. Raimi didn't agree with all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but Marvel did.
Wasn't it Marvel who insisted on Venom being in SM3 despite Raimi's objections? And we all see how that crapfest turned out.
Friggin' Marvel. I knew the comic book movie bubble was going to burst sooner or later, but it looks like it's going to be by Marvel's own hands.
Marvel will learn soon enough that we're not all going to just flock to their movies just because they're released. If SM4 is anything like SM3 was, I'll skip 5 and 6 and so will a lot of other people.
What the F ever happened to just letting the director control his own movie? Cripes, look at Nolan's success. You don't see DC shoving ideas down his throat.
