Gary Ross to Rewrite Spider-Man 4
July 8, 2009
Gary Ross, who directed Tobey Maguire in Seabiscuit and Pleasantville, has come aboard to rewrite the script for Spider-Man 4, reports Variety.
Sam Raimi will again direct the Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios project that will go into production early next year.
The Spider-Man 4 script was originally written by James Vanderbilt, and then rewritten by David Lindsay-Abaire.
The fourth installment is scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release.

Yikes. Don't know how I feel about all of these re-writes.

this sounds like it could be good but also bad. But I dothink this sounds good. They're making sure this is the best it could be.

Hmmm ... already issues right out of the gate with this movie. I hope Sam Raimi learned his lesson from the disappointing "Spider-Man 3".

they really need to get this movie going if they want to meet the release date!

It doesn't matter how many rewrites it takes as long as they get it right.

Gary Ross is awesome. He really understands story and characters, especially having come from an acting background, then writing and directing. This is GREAT news!

Too early to say anything good or bad about this. Re-writes are common, nothing wrong with that.
If anything, it should make us happy that they are working very hard to get it right...
hopefully...

don't matter who writes it. if raimi's directing, it's gonna suck.

Hope they get this movie right, Marvel needs top have box office success with Spider-man. Its about time that Marvel listen to the fans more openly, Punisher has suffered, Blade Trinity, Daredevil, Elektra etc.
Re-writes are a good thing depending upon the subject matter, as details can be spread across the franchise.
Bring on the lizard and the King-Pin.

This should be just top notch stuff guys really. Right up there with Batman and Robin. Spider-Man 4: Black and White Horses
Seriously, imagine Kraven riding a horse in black and white not realizing he is in a 50's TV series.

Mantronix is right. Re-writes aren't a bad thing. Nothing is written in a first pass.

I agree with DAG.
Either they are rewriting it over and over again to make it the best possible or... or teh scripot is so horrible that no one has been able to fix it yet lol

Biggest problem with superhero films, the writers dont have a clue about the source material and will write for the 'actor'. We aint paying to see the actor, we want to see spiderman.
Get the marvel writers on board, then get someone to adapt what they wrote into a script.

Yeesh it's hard to save the franchise after Spider-man 3. I'm just glad Raimi isn't writing this one. He did a lovely job of failing at that with the last movie.

dooode matronix is wrong--"Marvel needs top have box office success with Spider-man"--spellcheck too, eh? Spider-Man has been a cash cow-it's a sure thing-'nuff said on that
all the whiners about SM3 need to chill--it is soooooooooo effing over-move on!
Raimi puts his heart & soul into these projects and has big wigs tell 'em to put Venom in there
all the other stuff-whatever-- he has done an awesome job with the franchise
make mine marvel!

Well this will probably suck. But District 9 looks good. Finally something original. Spiderman 3 was lame.

all movies recieve constant rewrites by many writers. you only see one or two usually credited because the writers guild decides who gets the credit.
so multiple writers doesnt really mean anything in terms of quality.

WOWOWOWOWOW!
This is GREAT NEWS! Gary Ross is a very meditative and selective writer/director, and his films are amazing. I hope he can bring some magic to "Spider-Man 4" and reinvigorate this franchise.
I just wonder who they're going to have as villains for the film. I mean, all the villains that are left are nothing more than cheesy ones (i.e. Lizard, Rhino, Shocker, Hammerhead, Tarantula, Morbius... OH WAIT! SCORPION! Now that is a BAD ASS VILLAIN!)
SCORPION!
SCORPION!
SCORPION!
SCORPION!
YYEYEAHHHAHAAAAAAAAARRGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! *pumps fist*

AWESOME! It will be even sappier!

They don't really have any reason to **** this one up. They have plenty of time, several rewrites, and seem to have learned from their Spider-Man 3 mistakes. I'll save judgment until I see it. Could be good.
Here's hopin'.

This is great that they're giving it care but I hope too many cooks don't spoil the broth.
Terminator Salvation springs to mind. I personally loved it but there are obvious holes where clearly re-writes missed a point of the plot as each writer tailored the film to their vision. Even God-film writer Jon Nolan (as some seem to deem him, part in thanks to TDK) couldn't fix everything.
Optimistic about the film though, but I just hope the writers don't skip a beat as so to speak.
Bring it ooooooooooon!!!!!!!

I agree about Scorpion. But what else has Ross written? Hopefull it doesn't become a mess of writing.
Posted by: Harish on July 8, 2009 at 18:20:30
And now separately, my opinions on the film itself;
I hope they don't skip fours in the fourth film, like the first three which appear to be real-time (with the third having a three year gap from the second) - it'll feel like Peter's suddenly old and if his relationship situation is unresolved it wouldn't feel right (as an example) but the main reason I ask is because Peter is always shown to be a youthful person, never really over 25 by impression.
At most, make it a two year gap.
A simple and humble request.
And I have faith that Raimi WILL direct a very good film, it's the story that concerns me. (keep in mind they are two different things)

How can people possibly say, "This movie will suck" based on a re-write? Makes no sense. Screenplays always undergo re-writes. In high school or college did any of you simply hand in your term paper's first draft to be graded? Probably not. If you were smart, you re-wrote it and refined it for the best grade possible. Same case with the Spider-Man 4 script.
