Raimi and Maguire Set for Spider-Man 4?
September 5, 2008
Back in May, Cinematical was the first to report that Sony Pictures might shoot Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 at the same time using James Vanderbilt's script that the site said spans two films.
Now, Deadline Hollywood Daily has added on that director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have apparently signed on the dotted line for Spider-Man 4, which the studio is targeting for a May 2011 release.
DHD adds that there's no deal for Kirsten Dunst to return as Mary Jane Watson yet, but the character will be featured and the studio would not recast her.
As for the baddie in the fourth picture, the site says that principal photography doesn't start until the fall of 2009 and that once we find out who the villain we'll know who is playing it. Naturally, speculation would put Dylan Baker's character Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard at the head of the line, but who knows?
According to the site, "the studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time because doing that is so cost effective and 'it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together.'"
DHD also says that Sony has hired two screenwriters to pen the new script for the Spidey spin-off Venom.
Is this all accurate? We'll have to wait and see if/when the studio starts making some announcements, which could be a while!

Hey this might not be too bad. Waiting 4 yrs to put out another movie in the franchise may give writers and directors more time to bring us one hell of a good movie. As long as the same actors return were all good.

I hope it happens and we get a more better film then the mess spiderman 3 turned out. Really to me i thought it was a good film just take out venom, and the dancing in the street/club scenes its a better film.

Sam Raimi is fine. No Kirsten Dunst? Woohoo! The franchise is saved!

I'll take Sam and Tobey. They gave us two good movies, and probably would've given us a good third if Arad hadn't butted in and forced him to use Venom. I'll be all for Sam Raimi back as director, as long as Arad stays out when it comes to story.

Awesome I mean sure we need to wait for official word from Sony Pictures itself but the 4 year wait will be worth it if we get both movies within a year of each other. FIRST!!!
Posted by: Brand-O on September 5, 2008 at 17:39:50
By the way, Jack, I'm definitely with you on that one.

Just kidding I'm not really first I hate it when people do that.

Bad move. Spiderman 3 was a disaster, and not because of too many villains. It tanked because Mary Jane was the Villain, and Tobey's non stop emo cry fest.
New cast, new director. JJJ is the only one who gets to stay...

Great, so more Spidey yanking his mask off every 5 seconds. I officially give up on this franchise if Raimi and Maguire return.

I have gotten over blaming Maguire and Raimi for the debacle of Spider-Man 3, it was the producer and studio's fault in forcing Venom on Raimi, who hates the Venom character. James Vanderbilt's writing for Zodiac was pretty damn good. I'm willing to continue forgetting Spider-Man 3 ever happened and give 4 and 5 a shot.

the first two spideys were great, the third had some good parts but overall was a disappointment. It would be nice if they saved the franchise with two more movies along the lines of 1 and 2, but should they really make them?

People who dis Raimi have no idea what they're talking about.
Posted by: Trampy on September 5, 2008 at 17:57:00
I think it would be great if they brought them back....I would love to see spiderman 4 and 5 done one after another with a good story to the movies and awesome special effects....I like Kristen Dunst and hope she comes back as well....I think a neat villian would be a vampire that spiderman has face call Morpheous and maybe have Mysterio in it as well...I mean Spiderman is a big movie if it is done right and vampires are in so what would be a better story to have and it would definitly make for one interesting movie especially if one leads right into the other in Spideman 4 and 5

seriously raimi is awesome. EVIL DEAD AND ARMY OF DARKNESS was him at his best. but spider-man...not his cup o' tea. and whoever the writers were for spider-man 3. GO SUCK A NUT. U ARE HORRIBLE. GO DO INDIE DRAMA FILMS. STAY AWAY FROM OUR COMIC MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Sam and Tobey can make more great Spidey films. Even with Spider-man 3, this series is the best comic book film franchise ever besides Nolan's bat films.
Spider-man helped charge this renewed interest in superheroes and comics. If it wasn't for Raimi and X-men director Bryan Singer The Dark Knight would have never have been made.
Raimi genuinely cares about the character and Tobey was great casting. The movies were not perfect but hopefully a fourth could give us some of the things the others lacked. There are so many excellent Spider-man villians and wonderful stories that more Spider-man movies can come off fresh and unique.
Even if Dunst doesn't return or only wants a cameo they could easily write her out. In the comics she went west to Hollywood for career purposes leaving Peter in New York when they briefly separated. Gwen could come back and maybe even meet her tragic end (hopefully without any clone saga stuff).
By the way, If any of you are fans of the old Stan Lee Spider-man books you must checkout the "Spectacular Spider-man" animated series. I hated the art style at first but the stories and series continuity made me keep watching. It surpasses the '90s cartoon as far as story telling goes and does a great job of compressing Spidies early years together while throwing in latter elements like Venom and Harry as the Goblin.
