J.K. Simmons on More Spider-Man Movies
Source:Superhero Hype!
June 7, 2008

Superhero Hype! recently talked to J.K. Simmons (AKA J. Jonah Jameson) on the set of his new comedy, I Love You, Man, with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, and asked a few Spider-Man 4 questions:

SHH!: So we know that James Vanderbilt is close to turning in a script for "Spider-Man 4." Have they reached out to you yet?
J.K. Simmons: We sort of check in once in a while. They say, you know, we want J.K. to do it. We don't know where. We don't know when. We don't know who. We don't know anything, you know? They signed all of us for the first three films. Sam, Tobey, all the way down the line to me and we'll see where it goes. I mean its all conjecture and you guys probably know more than I do at this point. There was talk of doing four and five concurrently and I don't know if they're still considering that or not and I spoke to Tobey in I guess it was February, sort of awards season time and he's certainly amenable to doing some more and hopefully we'll be able to get everybody back and make another good one.

SHH!: Or a couple of 'em?
Simmons: Couple, three, four, five! Whatever. You know, I could buy a bigger house.

SHH!: What if Sam decides not to come back as a director but stays as a producer, would you guys still be...
Simmons: Well...

SHH!: Would you and the rest of the gang still come back?
Simmons: Well, I can only speak for myself, but if Sam were not the director but still had a hand in it then I would certainly have a reasonable amount of faith in it. Obviously if he's the director I'm there 100%. If he's not involved at all, which I think is VERY unlikely, then it would be a situation that I would have to think about. But if he's involved, hopefully directing or at least as a producer then, I'm pretty confident that it would be something that I wanna do. Plus they pay money.

Bring me pictures of spiderman!

Posted by: Tom on June 7, 2008 at 03:35:35

Sweet. Though I've read that he has said this before, he is really the only actor who can do this right that I can think of at least.

Can't wait for spidey 4. I hope J.K. Simmons returns as JJJ . he was awesome in the trilogy .

Posted by: REPLACE RAMI AND THE REST on June 7, 2008 at 04:00:14

He was the only good thing about all three movies. He did the character justice and he added something extra just, like Robert Downey Jr. did with Ironman

I grew up reading Fantastic Four, Thor, IronMan, Captain America, Spiderman, The Avengers and etc. etc.

The one thing that separates Spiderman from the other Superhero books is his cocky sense of humor and how he likes to taunt the super villains. None of that was ever expressed in the movies. Tobey only said about 10% of the remarks Spiderman would say. And when Tobey did say them they were not funny. Tobey is just to much of an uptight jerk to deliver such funny lines. Leonardo Dicapro could have delivered them if they had stuck with him.

For those who don't think it is a big deal than you are an idiot who does NOT RESPECT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT SPIDERMAN WHICH IS HIS SENSE OF HUMOR THAT WAS LACKING IN THE MOVIES. THAT IS JUST LIKE TAKING AWAY THE HULKS ANGER.

Rami is to blame for this:

1. He never had an understanding of how funny spiderman is when fighting bad guys.
2. He never understood that MJ is supposed to be a hot supermodel. Instead he cast an ugle zombie looking person called Dunst. She is an annoying arrogant twit who is not even apreciative of the part.
3. He never got that Eddie Brock/Venom is supposed to be a larger than life Jason Vorhees type body builder threat and scary. Sort of a dark shadow over the smaller Spiderman.
4. He liked the old villains more than the new cooler ones. Venom is not my favorite villain but, I am aware that he is the most popular Spiderman villain. Rami should not have been forced to put Venom in part three. He should have WANTED to put Venom in part one or two out of respect for the fans. Now we have to waite for a new Director to bring justice to Venom. But, for now we have a 1960's Joker version of venom.
5. Spiderman never looked as cool as he does with his legs in spider like expressions like Todd McFarlane and etc. had drawn him. In the movies Spiderman looks like he does in the 1960's cartoon.
6. The green goblin was turned into ironman.

THE LIST GOES ON. RAMI HAD THREE FILMS TO GET IT RIGHT AND HE KEPT ON SCREWING IT UP.

I am going from memory so, pardon, if I make a small mistake,

I remember one time in the comic when spiderman is fighting a super villain and then he comes crashing through a wall. Out of no where there are several of Spiderman's arch enemies all there at one time out numbering Spiderman. Spiderman then says, "I tell you guys what. How about we just call this a draw."

Now that is funny as hell and classic Spiderman. There is no way in hell Tobey can deliver a funny line like that and keep it funny. Rami cast Tobey so, he is to blame.

REPLACE THE DIRECTOR AND THAT BRATTY LOSER CAST.

BUT, KEEP J.K. Simmons.

He is great to watch.

Posted by: kevlar on June 7, 2008 at 04:25:04

i liked what James Vanderbilt did with Zodiac, that was a great movie. i believe he can adapt spidey straight from the comics into a good screenplay

and when Raimi did put some of Spidey's sense of humor and arrogance in, like the dancing scene in 3, so many people ripped him for it. now i admit 3 wasnt great by any means and the ending was hot garbage, but he can redeem himself with a another good spidey movie along the lines of s-m 1&2.

Did a GREAT job as JJJ.

Posted by: Lebeau on June 7, 2008 at 05:09:06

Here's the thing you have to realise about the SM world...Spider-Man is funny...Peter Parker isn't. Parker is an uptight nerd with too much on his plate to handle...Spider-Man is his realease, he's addicted to that role and without it he's just another wrecked young adult struggling to make his way. I loved the first two films, I thought they did a really great job...but the third was ludicrous. It wasn't just a slip in quality, it was one of the worst films I've ever seen.

By all reports, Raimi will be back. I believe that he can learn from his mistakes, but I have very little confidence in Maguire or Dunst. I think you can get away with culling them and keeping the rest of the supporting cast. I'd hate to see them back after the cryfest joke that was the ending of SM3.

Fugg I hate that movie.

Posted by: REPLACE RAMI AND THE REST is a douche on June 7, 2008 at 05:11:36

REPLACE RAMI AND THE REST is a douche. You had a good argument going that was peaking my interest until you said "For those who don't think it is a big deal than you are an idiot" Guess your opinion is law. What are you 10? Either way, you're a fan-boy douche. Go get laid or something and chill out.

Posted by: joey on June 7, 2008 at 05:38:32

You, sir, are an idiot. Why don't you go and shoot your own movie, since you're such an expert on everything. Talk about a "fan-boy douche". ****ing ******* morons.

Posted by: cowstaff on June 7, 2008 at 06:02:34

in response to "REPLACE RAMI AND THE REST" comments on Tobey not being able to do the one-liners and the humor, which I am a huge spiderman fan, and was also missing that, If you play the Spiderman movie game for PS2, he does the voice of Peter Parker/Spiderman, and the game is full of the things that he should have been saying in the movies, with great delivery. It's just the scripts, not his inability to do it justice. I really hope that J.K. Simmons stays as JJJ. Great actor, great portrayal.

Posted by: Moviegoer on June 7, 2008 at 06:16:45

Man!!! Why are you fanboys always saying that why is he not funny like in the comics?? Why is it not like in the comics?? blah blah blah... If you always complain that a superhero movie you've watched is not like the comics you've read, then just read the comics and don't watch the movies you nerdy losers that doesn't have a life and live under you're mothers basements!!!!!!! Coz if you asked the general public they'll say that SM3 was great!!! It's only you comic book fanboys that say that it sucked becoz it's not what you've read in you're comics that are used as toilet papers you MORONS!!!!!!

Posted by: Penguin Truth on June 7, 2008 at 06:23:40

Why is everyone so harsh on Dunst? She isn't a massive beauty, but she's fairly attractive, and a good actress. I would do her, and all of you would, too.

Also, the first two Spider-Man movies were perfect. The second one was the best superhero movie of all time. There's no debating it. Raimi made one subpar Spidey movie because he didn't know whether he could make more, so he crammed too much into one movie.

Stop rewriting history by saying he did a ****ty job or the entire cast needs to be replaced. Those first two movies were magic. One lame sequel does not mean the death of the franchise.

Posted by: names are such odd things on June 7, 2008 at 06:45:12

JK did a great job as JJ... Hope he is back, and would like Raimi back as well.
I actually quite enjoyed the first two Spider-man movies, and didn't hate the third one nearly as much as others, though Topher Grace was a horrible decision for Venom. I don't really care if it's accurate to the comic or not as long as it's good, and Venom was not.

Moviegoer : Spider-man 3 was not great, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as alot of other people say, but the last 20 minutes of that film were just bad. It was an average movie, not nearly as good as Spider-man 2(which really was one of the best comic book films of all time), but certainly leagues better than X-men 3.

Posted by: Rick Jones on June 7, 2008 at 06:58:35

One of the biggest dissapointments with Spider-Man 3 was the black suit of Spider-Man. In the comics it was very simple. Unlike the red and blue suit, there wasn't any web pattern on it. But the spider emblem was big and went from front to back. In the movie, they kept the pattern and only tweaked the original emblem a bit. How the **** is that accurate to the comic books?

Now, Venom on the other hand HAD that big emblem for some yet unexplained reason. But that's not saying much, he still looked like **** with those small muscles and yellow claws. Oh, not to forget the nazgûl voice... Don't get me started about the "New Goblin" character.

It goes on and on.

Please replace Sam Raimi now! Spiderman should be reboot now!!

Posted by: Louise Smith on June 7, 2008 at 07:25:29

J.K. Simmons will most definitely return as J. Jonah Jameson in more sexy Spider-Man movies. He brings charm, character, and charisma into the franchise, and I hope he sticks around for a very long time.

Sam Raimi will absolutely continue making more sexy Spider-Man movies because he is the only director in the world who can bring out the beauty and intelligence in the franchise and most of all, in Spider-Man.

Tobey Maguire will positively continue with the super sexy Spider-Man film franchise because he looks so intelligent, beautiful, sweet, sexy, brave, and wonderful in them.

I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH, TOBEY MAGUIRE!
YOU ARE, AND ALWAYS WILL BE, MY PERSONAL PETER PARKER/SPIDER-MAN AND TIGER!
PLEASE CONTINUE WITH THE SUPER SEXY SPIDER-MAN FILM FRANCHISE, TOBEY MAGUIRE!
YOU ARE MY HANDSOME AND BRAVE PRINCE CHARMING, TOBEY MAGUIRE, AND I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART, MIND, BODY, AND SOUL, TIGER!
BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL, TOBEY MAGUIRE! I LOVE YOU, TIGER, VERY MUCH!

Posted by: jeff on June 7, 2008 at 08:15:46

Now simmons was perfect as JJJ. Maguier ehhhh...everyone is like blah blah blah tobey and kristen are spidey and mj. Mj Is suppoused to be smokin hot and spiderman is a **** when he's fighting bad guys he just rips on them the entier time...maguir lacked that. And I'm not saying this because I think venom is a great villian but they didn't do him justice. If they would have ended 3 with brock getting the suit and have four just venom it would have been crazy! He's such an iconic figure that he should have had his own film with spiderman. And maybe have him return in the 5th one with carnage as a threat and him joining spiderman and the black cat to take him down. But that's just how I would have done it. But I'm just an average guy so oh well but anyways there's my little rant

Posted by: Moviegoer on June 7, 2008 at 08:17:44

OMG.... Another as$hole fanboy, Rick Jones. Complaining about the black suit saying that it's not what he'd read in his fuc#ing comics used as a toilet paper... As I told earlier just read you're comics in you're mom's basement and stay out of the movies DUMBASS!!!!

Posted by: Madeye319 on June 7, 2008 at 08:24:51

Well said moviegoer! If you want everything to be exactly like the comic then as moviegoer so eloquentley put it, go down in your moms basement & read the comic!! Movies are made for the general public, fans & non-fans alike. Not just for the die hard comic geeks.

Posted by: Kryptonian on June 7, 2008 at 08:24:59

Wrong use of the word "you're" there Moviegoer, but I got you're point. Fanboys are really grown'up ASSH0LES....

Posted by: winged avenger on June 7, 2008 at 08:28:50

Okay idiots it has been proven tobey kirsten jk said that they would not return unless sam films it.Sam will be back.Ps i can tell some of you dont read the comics he started jokeing around whith actual funny lines mid 70s-90 even now he is no wher near as funny.Toby did parker and spidey justis the first moive he joked in the cage match and at the time it was funny as hell.Ps play the games and you will hear the comidic side.
