Is Marvel Moving Forward with Ant-Man ?

While Marvel Studios is moving full steam ahead with Kenneth Branagh's Thor and Joe Johnston has been all over the place talking about his The First Avenger: Captain America this past weekend, there's still one very elusive missing piece to the Avengers puzzle, and that would be... Ant-Man !

A movie about the diminutive Avenger, Dr. Hank Pym, who is in fact one of the charter members of the team, has been in the works for some time. In fact, Edgar Wright was on hand at that very same Marvel Studios Comic-Con panel back in 2006 when Jon Favreau and Louis Letterier were first talking about their upcoming projects Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk . (You can read our interview from those times here .)

When Disney bought Marvel, there were some rumors Pixar might take over...

Christopher Nolan to Mentor New Superman Movie?

In possibly one of the biggest superhero movie shockers since the last one--when was the Spider-Man reboot, three weeks ago?-- Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that The Dark Knight and Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan has been assigned the potentially thankless task of being the latest filmmaker assigned by Warner Bros. to try to save the "Superman" franchise, in this case in a mentoring capacity to figure out the best way to proceed.

Director Bryan Singer helmed the last installment Superman Returns three and a half years ago, which grossed $391 million worldwide, but wasn't seen as a hit due to its reported $270 million production budget. (Remember that the studio doesn't get 100% of those theatrical grosses.)

Since then, various names have...

TMNT and Gatchaman Studio Shuts Down

The Associated Press is reporting that Imagi International Holdings stopped funding its computer animation studio on February 5 to "to further preserve its limited liquidity and shareholder value." The studio will ask a Hong Kong court to name liquidators.

According to the report, Imagi said it will continue to develop movie ideas and outsource the actual animation work to mainland China and other countries, where costs are lower. We assume this means that the CG-animated Gatchaman is safe. Nickelodeon and Paramount recently announced they are making a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie for 2012, but that will be live action.

In 2007, Imagi released its first feature movie TMNT , which earned $95.6 million worldwide. But Imagi's second release, Astro Boy...

Reese and Wernick on Writing Deadpool

MTV talked to Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick who are collaborating with Ryan Reynolds on the script for X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off Deadpool .

"We're outlining it pretty seriously right now," Reese said. "Were in the early stages."

"We just absolutely adore the character and the comic," added Wernick. "And tonally, it's right up our alley. He's the unstable, smart-ass, self deprecating guy — and they say write what you know, so [we're perfect for it]."

So what has it been like working with Reynolds? "One of the nice things about working with Ryan is that he tonally gets it — if we ever do something that is off the Deadpool path, or if it doesn't feel like Deadpool, he catches it," Reese...

Goyer and Jonah Nolan Writing Next Batman Movie?

Last week, news broke that David Goyer was exiting ABC's "FlashForward" as showrunner so that he can again concentrate on his feature career.

"As my feature projects have started ramping up again, I felt I was being pulled in too many directions," Goyer said. "I'm proud of the show and excited about the relaunch. It's in great hands."

Once again buried in a story on Deadline Hollywood is the revelation that one of those features is none other than The Dark Knight follow-up:

Of course, Goyer's feature career is really heating up, since he co-wrote Batman Begins, and penned the story for The Dark Knight, and is now writing the third Batman installment with Chris Nolan's brother Jonah.

Stay tuned...

Johnston Talks Captain America Costume

On Saturday, we got a chance to talk to The First Avenger: Captain America director Joe Johnston about the anticipated film (you can read that here ) and the Los Angeles Times got some more costume, story and casting details from the helmer ( Spoilers ahead! ).

"The costume is a flag, but the way we're getting around that is we have Steve Rogers forced into the USO circuit," Johnston said. "After he's made into this super-soldier, they decide they can't send him into combat and risk him getting killed. He's the only one and they can't make more. So they say, 'You're going to be in this USO show' and they give him a flag suit. He can't wait to get out of it."

He added that "When he does go AWOL, he covers up the suit but then, after a few things...

Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens Coming July 29, 2011

Universal Pictures announced on Friday that the Peter Berg-directed Battleship was moving from July 29, 2011 to May 25, 2012. That would have left the July 29 spot to only Sony's The Smurfs , but Universal now also says that the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys & Aliens will be coming to theaters that weekend.

The DreamWorks project, based on the Platinum Studios Comics graphic novel written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, will star Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof wrote the script.

The sci-fi Western explores what would happen if the traditional Old West enemies -- cowboys and Native Americans -- found the prairie attacked by aliens in mid-1800s Arizona.

Red Skull Confirmed as Captain America Villain

Joe Johnston, director of the forthcoming The First Avenger: Captain America , has been doing press all day out in Los Angeles for his new movie The Wolfman and ShockTillYouDrop.com Managing Editor Ryan Rotten had a chance to talk with Johnston about the movie and what to expect.

Johnston confirmed that the Red Skull will indeed be the villain of the first movie and told Ryan a bit more about why they decided to set the majority of the movie during WWII:

"Virtually the entire story except the bookends are in World War II because we all recognize we have one chance to tell the origin story of how he became Captain America, you can't tell a modern story and then go back and tell the origin story. If you're going to do it, let's do it. Let's do it first. Everyone...

Fox Developing Daredevil Reboot

In order to keep the movie rights to Marvel Comics' "Daredevil" under their belt, 20th Century Fox and New Regency are looking to develop a reboot of the sightless superhero with News Corp VP Peter Chernin producing and David Scarpa ( The Day the Earth Stood Still ) writing a script, according to Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood .

The original movie directed by Mark Steven Johnson and starring Ben Affleck in the title role (and his current wife Jennifer Garner as Elektra) was released almost exactly seven years ago and grossed $179.2 million worldwide.

This probably shouldn't come as too big a surprise as there has been talk of some sort of reboot ever since Disney bought Marvel last year, but this is the first confirmation that one is being actively developed.

UPDATE: Heat Vision reports that both Sony and the actor's reps say that Lerman is not the frontrunner just yet and that no actual "business discussions" have been made with Lerman.

Both Columbia Pictures and the actor’s camp have denied that Lerman, who stars as the title character in “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief,” is the lead candidate for job. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Lerman reportedly said, “There have been a few discussions; it’s definitely something I’m looking into.” That has led to reports that Lerman is the new Parker.

While a “wide net” is being cast, according to a studio spokesman, “No offers have been made, nor have any business discussions been made with Lerman.”

No Plans for a Watchmen Movie Sequel

The web has been going wild with rumors after Bleeding Cool published this article about a possible Watchmen sequel. Granted, they were referring mostly to a possible sequel to the graphic novel and not the movie, but the site did make a brief mention of who the movie sequel rights belonged to. Deadline Hollywood 's Nikki Finki checked it out and received the following:

But a well-placed insider tells me: "There is no truth to anything related to a movie sequel. Not a chance by a longshot. With regards to the comics, well, I guess anything is possible. I'll keep my opinion to myself as to whether it's a smart idea to do so."

Zack Snyder's Watchmen wasn't a big hit for Warner Bros., making $185.3 million worldwide on a budget of $130 million.

No Iron Man 2 Super Bowl Spot

Despite previous reports that it was a done deal, it doesn't look like Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios will be airing a Super Bowl spot for Iron Man 2 on Sunday. Variety says:

It had three spots last year for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "Star Trek" and "G.I. Joe." Studio decided not to run an ad for Marvel's "Iron Man 2."

Paramount Considering 3D for Transformers 3

In an article at Variety talking about films getting converted into 3D, the trade says it is still a possibility that Transformers 3 might add a dimension:

Bay's next project is "Transformers 3," and there have been discussions among Bay, Paramount and Industrial Light & Magic about going 3D with the pic. The big stumbling block is the extra time required to do production and visual effects in 3D, as the movie's release date is already set. Having the pic post-converted could alleviate that problem.

Producer Joel Silver revealed to the Los Angeles Times that comic book adaptation Sgt. Rock has found new life at Warner Bros. Pictures, but that the film won't take place in WWII. Instead, the plan is for Sgt. Rock to serve his country in the not-too-distant future.

We didn't want to do Iraq, we didn't want to do a contemporary war. We wanted to do a sort of futuristic war. It's pretty strong.
