Punisher: War Zone Gets Shot Down
December 7, 2008
ComingSoon.net has posted the box office estimates for the weekend which show that Lionsgate's Punisher: War Zone struggled its first three days in theaters:
Newcomer Punisher: War Zone, directed by Lexi Alexander and starring Ray Stevenson, bombed out of the gate with just $4 million from 2,508 theaters, a low average of $1,595 and good for only eighth place. It is less than a third of what the studio's first "Punisher" film opened to in 2004.

Yep, It actually LOST money over the weekend. Even Twilight made more.

Marketing effort for this thing was questionable at best. I'll catch it on DVD and see if it deserved a better box office response.

should have kept thomas jane and the script writers on for a second!

who was the genius who selected Christmas season to release a rated r bloody/gore/violence/ filled punisher movie that doesn't even look good lol
Posted by: chris on December 8, 2008 at 00:28:02
that's what they get for not keeping tom jane, bring him back, ignore the fact that this film ever happened, and make a direct sequel to the 2004 punisher, saw this film last night out of curiosity, it fkn sucked, bad acting, no plot, no tom jane, wtf did they expect!
Posted by: TDW on December 8, 2008 at 00:29:27
had they stuck with Thomas Jane and did it the way they started, it woulda been great.. dumasses.
Posted by: Zer00 on December 8, 2008 at 00:32:18
Had they made the movie with Jane with the(awesome, you should all find it and read it) script by Johnathan Hensleigh this would have never happened.
God what a laughable movie this was.
"It is less than a third of what the studio's first "Punisher" film opened to in 2004."
That's justice. Nay. Punishment.

Ooooooo, I know, I know.
The same people that thought opening Mamamia flim that turly no one knew about except that it was a song againest this years most talked abou flims TDK. Now I hate ABA and truly enjoyed seeing a lamb go to slaughter.
But I did like the Punisher in 04 and if Jane had stayed on and the movie was still like this. I beleive it would have came in second or at least beat twilight ( I don't get it but my GF certainly does. She got it over and over and over again 5 if anyone's counting)
Anyway I'll probably rent this one but honestly to the men behind the release date if they wanted a Happy New Year employeed they should have waited til Jan 09
Stay Frosty

I actually saw the movie. Wasn't that bad.....actually enjoyed it. I did not go in looking for TDK. But it was good popcorn action movie. It was better that the 1st. It was closer to the Comic book.

Mama Mia has made back it's budget, and more. It's made over 300 mil. Kevin Smith would pray for a hit like that.

@Big Six
i think you were the only one. Lexi should send you a 'thank you' or something. I'm going this week, at least now i know the theater will be quiet.

All three Punisher movies FAILED! How does keeping Thomas Jane makes it any better. His version is probably the worst out of the three.

Just got back from the film. I can honestly say that Ray Stevenson is the best Punisher on film to date. he looked, sounded, and acted like the Punisher. But the film was bad. It really didn't know what kind of movie it wanted to be... comedy/thriller or gore/thriller. The comedy doesn't work, and the worst moment for me is the final shot of the film. Without spoiling anything, you see a really cool looking Punisher do something really cool, and when the camera "fades to black" before the credits, you get a stupid line from the bumbling cop that is suppose to be funny. It isn't FUNNY, it ruins an otherwise great scene, and if there is a God, that line will be removed from the DVD.
All that said... should this movie get a sequel??? YES. The one thing that worked was Frank Castle. It is worth seeing just for him. Ray was great, and is the best choice for the role should they make a sequel. But dump everything else, and don't treat it like a comedy. Give the film the respect a Marvel film deserves.

really the movie was a worthless peice of sh**! I hope they never make a Punisher movie ever again. there's a reason why they havent been able to make an actual sequal but wound up with 3 movies.. I figured the movie was going to suck but as a fan of Marvel I went to go see it and give it a chhance.
Really it was tasteless.. Only people with a low IQ could enjoy a movie with such a crappy pot and nothing but gore

Saw this opening night and as a punisher fan i loved it. I will give Tom Jane's movie credit for having a plot to begin with, but this Punisher movie was a "Punisher" movie. Had they have come out with this in August the numbers would have been alot different. Finally I gotta agree with Mr. Boy.. Tom Jane's Punisher felt the least like the Punisher of all.

this movie was immeasurably better than the first (and I liked it). I've seen it twice so far. It's far from my favorite movie, but its definitely one of my favorite to watch, if that makes any sense

Where's all the fans of the new punisher that told me I was a stupid **** because I thought this one looked like crap? Most everyone who has posted here looks like they've always hated the movie. Some even admit to thinking Jane would have been better in the sequel. And I'd have to agree with them.
But not just because of Jane. To make the Punisher interesting, it's not about making a film as gory as all hell. It's about understanding characters and why they do things. I believe Hensleigh and Jane knew this. And I'm pissed that the studio threw them out.
To make a good action movie these days, you're going to have to look past the action.

as much as i wanted to like this, I did not. Admittedly, it is better than the thomas jane version but that was because that sucked hard so it did not take much to beat it.
PWZ is really more like a direct-to-dvd movie, another marvel dud.

if my memory serves me right they didn't ditch jane he ditched them to film mutant chronicles
Posted by: BigMurph on December 8, 2008 at 01:08:50
well you figure with the loss of Thomas Jane...and his many shirtless scenes from the original there is probably a loss of the female and homosexual(closet or proud) demographic that went to see this movie..... plus the possible refusal of new viewers to see this redux cause of the horrendous Jane version leaving a bad taste in their mouth(wallet) so now we can blame the second one for the third one not getting respect... goddammit Thomas Jane.. why couldn't you stick to shark riding and sun-in hair sessions
Posted by: GammaBob on December 8, 2008 at 01:17:45
meh, doesn't matter to me. I actually like the fact that this film was made primarily with the the true hardcore fans in mind.
Makes me respect the film makers that much more that they had the balls to make a movie with some originality and not just another cookie cutter movie for the lily livered masses.
Probably would have made a lot more if one it's main actors would have offed themselves a few months before the film's release though (*cough*, *cough*, TDK, *cough*)
Posted by: BigMurph on December 8, 2008 at 01:26:54
ahh... good point...Gammabob I don't like to go with hype but still Heath did a pretty impressive version.. ya can't help but feel a respect for people that put the movie out there for true PUNHEADS instead of the MTV whats hot now masses Vengeance should never be pretty... it should be icky make ya wanna wash your hands for fear of blood related illnesses
