Update: Australia is Losing Justice League Mortal

UPDATE: Variety has also published an article on the situation.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australia is about to lose the George Miller-directed Justice League Mortal after it was refused the Federal Government's new film production rebate.

The Oscar-winning director of Happy Feet and the "Mad Max" films said that the $200 million movie had a 90 per cent chance of being shot overseas after being knocked back by the board of the Film Finance Corporation.

"A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Australian film industry is being frittered away because of very lazy thinking," Miller said. "If that's going to be the final decision, they're throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars of investment that the rest of the world is competing for and, much more significantly, highly skilled creative jobs."

The director of the equity section of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance, Simon Whipp, has lobbied against Justice League Mortal's eligibility, describing it as an American story that will be performed in American accents.

Miller said he had "utter creative control" over the film and plans to appeal against the decision. "It feels to me like I'm not fighting for this film. I'm fighting for the Australian film industry."

wtf. does anyone care if they make a jla movie, why are they letting this douchebag make the film.

Posted by: Hitpehoaos on March 19, 2008 at 02:52:49

It seems to me like the studio is chasing low production costs because they are scared of it flopping?

Posted by: gamingkid on March 19, 2008 at 02:53:42

second that. All the fighting....what for? The end product is still going to be crap. I dont care what county this pile of crap is shot in, its still a terd!!

You idiots obviously don't know who George Miller is...

PLEASE do not make this cinematic abomination actually happen.

Posted by: Tim on March 19, 2008 at 03:00:19

what a stupid title. please let this be the beginning of the end for this project (even though i thought that already happened).

Posted by: TheScarecrow on March 19, 2008 at 03:00:33

Miller can whinge all he wants.

The rebate is designed so that more small AUSTRALIAN movies are made, not so giant American companies can make them on the cheap.

This is the whole reason Miller was hired, and the reason Megan Gale and Teresa Palmer are in the cast. They're trying to make the movie appear "Australian".

Absolutely pathetic.

Posted by: sylar on March 19, 2008 at 03:01:45

hey landon, hes that douchebag that made that babe movie also, so dont write shizznit about us, we want to see a good jla movie not crap, you jacka$$.

While every country has its problems, America is by far not closer to a utopia than any other country.

Justice League is another movie burdened with NEEDLESS negativity from so-called fans.

Posted by: andrew on March 19, 2008 at 03:37:55

Sylar, he also made the Mad Max Movies and The Witches Of Eastwick. He's kind of a big deal.

This movie shouldn't be made. It just sounds so damned stupid and 200 million? Make something else with that much money!

Btw, **** the U.S. saving dollars by making money in foreign countries. It's bull****. They deserve to be slapped around for it.

when did the film get the MORTAL stuck on? and why is this film still being made?

Posted by: ahh on March 19, 2008 at 04:41:40

please, don't turn this seemingly innocuous piece of news into some rant about U.S. versus other nations. Yes, the US has filmed many movies abroad, and it definitely is not the best country, especially in terms of politics. Hopefully that will change soon or at least some day.

And for the most part, it's not needless negativity. Even the producers know that the time just isn't right for a JLA movie. The Dark Knight, the Man of Steel, Wonder Woman..maybe a Flash or Green Lantern movie..these things need to be made first so that we have some sort of sense of awe and a connection to the characters (just like the Avengers). I love DC, but the fact is that even if we give this movie the benefit of the doubt, no matter how good it will be, it will never be as good as it *could* have been had they exercised some patience. For good arguments against this film, go to batman-on-film.com and check out Jett's take.

I think DC's idea for making a Justice League movie runs opposite Marvel's stategy. Instead of making individual character movies and then a team movie (Marvel's proposed Avengers project), a JL movie may create the kind of momentum for DC to eventually make the Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern movies that keep on getting stalled out and shelved. That is just my observation.

As far as why they're making this movie; its the same reason all big budget genre movies get made- MONEY! BOX OFFICE, TOYS, POSTERS, BOOKS, HAPPY MEALS, TOYS, LUNCH BOXES, COMICS, TOYS, T-SHIRTS, BOBBLE HEADS, TOYS, ETC. Oh, and toys. Personally, I'd like to see it, and I don't understand why everyone is so down on what could be the only opportunity to see some of these characters on the big screen. The CGI factor doesn't bother me, and almost seems like a perfect fit for the genre. With advances made in the technology, this could be an incredible movie; but if its a bomb, it won't be the only one out there- the industry is full of disappointing stuff.

Posted by: Ken on March 19, 2008 at 04:58:06

Also, George Miller is pretty cool. I'd like to see him at the helm. As far as the Australia thing; if the project doesn't fit it doesn't fit. Its pretty obvious that this movie isn't what the Aussie government intended for these financial programs. Nice try, film somewhere else.

It is a shame though, that something can't be worked out; that is a lot of money, and Australia has been (to this point) been a popular place for filming movies lately. Can they afford to alienate anyone?

Guys - different Actors for Batman and Superman doesnt mean the Movie is going to be crap! How can anyone of you say this movie is sh** before youve put an eye on the script or see some footage of it? George Miller is a great director and Im sure hes putting his heart into the JLA Projekt. Jeessssss you make me sick

Posted by: bigmanpacetke on March 19, 2008 at 05:13:39

Thank you j0hngalt for pointing out that this movie all of a sudden got "mortal" stuck on to it's title. I can't believe it took 16 posts before someone pointed that out. I mean what's so wrong with the title Justice League of America, is it so hard to a be a little patriotic with it? The JLA only has the most iconic American characters ever created. And yes i know the Justice League are more global....shut up. I'm sure it's hollywood just ****ing America once again out of our American hero's. Look at the G.I. Joe movie, the synopses for the movie says it's an elite global team, no mention of them being the f***'n REAL AMERICAN HERO's. Ahhhh whatever, time for my nap. And get off my lawn.

Posted by: Ryzy on March 19, 2008 at 05:19:07

Dude, they're right. It shouldn't get a special government rebate for being an 'Aussie' film if it's an american film just being shot here. The government rebate should be for Australian films only.

Posted by: Therefore I Am on March 19, 2008 at 05:24:20

i second what bigmanpacetke said.

Avengers will pwn this and the G.I. joe nonsense. and Captain America will still be Captain America rather than captain global, lol.

Posted by: Harish on March 19, 2008 at 05:35:41

Justice League MORTAL???

They might as well call it the Mortal League for Justice - it's so... meh.

Not that I was keen on Justice League of America, needs to be short. 'Justice League' would be adequate enough in my opinion. No hate to Americans.

Posted by: sytrus on March 19, 2008 at 05:38:07

go in france make this movie ,less expensive, and france love so american cowboy filmmaker, lol :)

...so many people... so often premature to judge. calling the film bad before anything even starts to come of it. you shouldn't be so quick to judge things. i hope everyone all of you meet today are really quick to judge and hate all of the things you do and say all day long. ...nuff' said.
