Will the Iron Man 2 Villains Team-Up?
September 28, 2009
IGN had a chance to talk with actor Sam Rockwell while he was down in Austin promoting Jared Hess' Gentleman Broncos at Fantastic Fest, and of course, they threw in a couple of questions about Rockwell's upcoming role as weapons dealer Justin Hammer in next year's anticipated Iron Man 2.
(Note: The title should be a hint that there is a plot spoiler in Rockwell's response, so if you don't want to know the answer, than stop reading here!)
They didn't get anything too exciting out of the actor, but in talking about his character Justin Hammer, Rockwell did let slip that Hammer would be working with Mickey Rourke's Whiplash to get revenge on Tony Stark. Rockwell told IGN the following:
"He's a rival of Tony's - they are competitors in the weapons industry. I team up with Michey Rourke and we decide we want to take him down and take down the Stark legacy. He's sort of like a cousin of the Charlie's Angels character I played. The smarmy cousin. But it's Mickey - he does the fighting and the kicking ass in the film."
When asked about playing the lead in a superhero movie, he told them he'd be willing to do one if he could do it with his Moon director Duncan Jones.
So what do you think? Makes sense that the very different Iron Man 2 villains team-up... just like in just about every superhero movie where there are two villains? And what about that idea of the guys behind Moon doing a superhero movie together?
Iron Man 2 is scheduled to open on May 7, 2010.

Wow, sounds like they're playing Hammer like Iago.............dig it!

It was kinda obvious that they would team up. 90% of all villains team up in movies if they don't its not a normal comic book movie.

As long as it's not a Spidey3 team up where they bump into each other and say "hey, you hate him and I hate em. Lets punish him." Like the way Nolan did the inadvertent "triggers" of the other villains in the film. They didn't team up or share a lot of screen time if at all, but their common goal was to take down the hero on their own.

That's how it usually goes when there's more than one villian in any sort of film. They usually come together at some point...

Not sure how many of you follow the actual comics book but Marvel is doing a 4-issue mini-series starting in November called Iron Man vs. Whiplash, which will introduce a villain more like the one played by Mickey Rourke in the upcoming movie. Just an FYI.

I hope its more like, Hammer sees Whiplash for what he is and decides to use him as a pawn to get rid of stark as a competitor and Whip decides that Hammer can provide him the means to exact his revenge on Stark.

Which is why TDK was so brilliant. Joker and Two-Face didn't "team-up". Joker helped create him by breaking Dent.

Sam Rockwell for BOOSTER GOLD!

Well, we've seen in the trailers, Rhodey and Hammer checking out the MARK III. So it's obvious that for Whiplash to have the same power source as the Iron Man armor, that it came from someone who has studied it and has the know how to copy it. My question is, how are "The Ten Rings" going to play into this? I'm willing to wait for the premiere for my answer.

Two Face was not necessary for TDK. It just dragged the movie on for an additional fifteen-twenty minutes and that's what scares me about having all these characters in IM2.

sam rockwell is a charasmatic actor. he portrays his characters with subtlety, which doesnt really carry over to comic book superheroes (brandon routh would be my example). if i had to pick a hero and/or a villian for rockwell to play i would have to choose; The Atom or riddler in batman 3/clayface (not the abominable clay monster but a realistic charcter who uses a chemical to change his face)

Hey Qbert... Kebert...whatever. Two-Face in The Dark Knight pushed the movie to the next level. Without him, the movie may not have been as climatic. Having Two-Face in the movie just made The Joker all the more anarchic, and showed he has no limits to his twisted insanity. He gave a sense of urgency and emotion never before seen in a comic book movie.

it'll be more like.
JH: Hello there whip lash. I'm not sure if you know who I am, but I'm pretty much a big deal. I'm Justin Hammer, and I realize that you and I share a similar hatred. We both want Stark destroyed. I know what his weapons have done to you and I'm here to give you the weapons to get your revenge and at the same time make me the biggest weapons manufacturer in the world.
que the team up!

TDK!!!
There. I said it.

Great thought pancake face. Sam Rockwell would make an awesome Booster Gold. He could easily pull off Booster's attitude. That would be a great casting choice!
