I predict TDK, Iron Man, and Hulk will make the grade.

Golden Army had the best special effects.

my vote is for hellboy 2. yes, i'm a dark knight fan, but hellboy was beautifully done and a very underrated movie. kudos to ron perlman for sitting in the make-up chair so damned long.

say what you want about the movies themselves, but HB2 had the best damn visuals period.

Its about time superhero movies got achievement awards.Great news

Iron Man has this all the way. TDK was not too spectacular on the effects. I KNOW I KNOW!!! It kicked ass everywhere else. But visual effects is not the area that it did.

TWILIGHT!!!!!lol

The Dark Knight should definitely get a nom. The fact that there were so many scenes that I didn't realize were done with models and CGI is why it should be included.

The CG work with Two-Face alone should give TDK an Oscar mention

I have to agree that Hellboy 2 did have the best visual special effects. While the other super hero movies forced HB2 to receive less fanfare, it was a very good movie. It had epic FX, very fantastic visuals, very beautiful.

The Dark Knight didn't even contain many special effects other than Two-Face's burnt side and Batman doing that trick off the wall on the Batpod.

I can see Hellboy, Hulk & Iron Man making the cut. If Hancock makes it, it's because Hollywood loves Will Smith.

Yeah, I think Hellboy made the biggest strides, especially given the smaller budget. Iron Man would be my second pick for effects...

I'm gessing, Hellboy II, Iron-Man and Incredible Hulk will make the list, Hancock's visual effects were a bit cartoonish and TDK hardly had any, even the director said that he wanted to use the less visuals effects/CGI as possible for this film.

Posted by: tonamania on December 12, 2008 at 16:17:31

Dissent - on the money with the picks. Hulk a good choice especially for the campus scene, Iron Man a good choice especially for the fighter scene and HB2 - too many awe inspiring scenes to list. HB2 is the winner. DK was expansive and immersive and visually stunning in places, but there wasn't much there in terms of "achievement in visual effects" - operative word being effects.

And Hancock was crap with special effects on par with the Fantastic Four. If it even gets nominated it's the "everything Fresh Prince touches turns to gold" effect.

Seems like many people think TDK vfx were limited to what was obvious- but keep in mind- the movie was meant to look real. There were plenty of city shots- Batman flying around china for instance- that were purely CG. That said- I still vote for Iron Man- but TDK wasn't bad and had plenty of great shots.

True The Dark Knight didn't have many special effects, but is it only based on the amount of effects, or the quality of the effects that are there? Two-Face looked sooo realistic, as did many of the other effects.

Some of you may not believe this, but visual effects is not synonymous with CGI. It's getting to be more the case, it seems, but at present it is not limited to visuals rendered in a computer.

who cares. the oscars are a joke. Ever since they gave the special effects oscar to golden compass over transformers...i could care less who wins an oscar.

Posted by: JB on December 12, 2008 at 16:39:39

the dark knight is pretty underrated. The only movie out of all of these I saw where the people next to me asked the screen, "How'd they do that?" -->about two face.. hellboy was pretty though.

I agree with kevin, how the hell does a pair of fighting polar bears can beat an army of robots that transform into cars. The polar bears in Lost look more realistic. But Hellboy 2 and Iron Man are definitely my top picks

you know...i just recently watched hell boy 2 on dvd and was kind of dissapointed i had missed it in theatres...but i do have to agree its very underrated and was visually stunning..it was like the world guillermo deltoro created in pans labrynth molded together with hell boy..which actually worked very well together..iron man's suit was sweet cgi..hulk is well..hulk and theres nothing impressive about him since we already got an idea of how he could look in the ang lee version...and TDK was not cgi heavy enough to warrant a win..oh and hancock was so
****ty doesn't deserve anything..what a terrible second half of a movie

Posted by: Enrico on December 12, 2008 at 17:03:36

I think Iron man should get that award.

Posted by: Guy in a Suit on December 12, 2008 at 17:04:07

Iron Man deserves it.

For one, Two-Face was make-up not CGI. Second off, the city shots in "The Dark Knight" where actual city shots not CGI shots or model shots. About 96% of everything in that film was done in the actual shot or on a sound stage not a green screen or blue screen (which the two screens require different types of cameras they use.)

@Binge Drink
Batman flying around china for instance- that were purely CG? Well for one, those weren't CGI cities. They did all live shots of the cities. There was a scene were Batman was standing on top of building looking out towards the city. That was not CGI shot in any shape or form. That was a straight out shot of him on a building. There is that one scene where you do see him fly briefly around a builing in China. The only thing that was CGI was Batman not the building. It cracks me up the amount of people who think so much is CGI when it's actually not. Trust me when I'm saying this because one I'm a independent filmmaker also a student recieving my degree in film & "The Dark Knight" used very little CGI in this film.

I'm sure many of you thought they used a model of a hospital when it blew up. Actaully, they used a actaully hospital building that was shuting down that scheduled to be terminated. That was an actual building & one time take.

the oscars are all political the dark knight will win just cuz heith died
