Terrence Howard Speaks Out on Rhodey Recast
Source:NPR, CHUD
October 18, 2008

Actor Terrence Howard appeared in the NPR studio to talk about his debut album "Shine Through It" with Scott Simon for the Weekend Edition. Of course, Simon had to ask him about the recent news that Don Cheadle would be replacing him as James "Rhodey" Rhodes in the upcoming Marvel Studios sequel Iron Man 2.

That news (which has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios, who remains as mum as usual) took many fans of the summer's blockbuster hit by surprise since Howard played a large role in many fans' love for the movie, and just as many were excited to see Howard step into the iron suit of War Machine. After the announcement a few days ago, speculation ran rampant about why Howard wouldn't return, but on Simon's radio show, Howard said that he found out about the news the same way the rest of us did.

"It was the surprise of a lifetime," he said. "There was no explanation. [The contract] just...up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on, sometimes. Promises aren't kept, and good faith negotiations aren't always held up."

You can hear the entire interview on NPR.org with the comments about Iron Man 2 starting at roughly 4 and a half minutes in.

(Thanks to Russ at CHUD for bringing this to our attention.)

Isn't that some ****! Funny how Hollyweird works! I figured it was all a publicity stunt!

Posted by: JohnJohn on October 18, 2008 at 14:30:32

We should start a petition to get Howard back in the role.

Talk about grass roots + viral.

Maybe they're setting it up for a Don Cheadle vs. Terrence Howard Battle of the War Machines in Iron Man 3!!!!

Posted by: Stephen on October 18, 2008 at 14:31:22

I GUESS I don't care that much...cause' Terrence's voice bothered the piss out of me...I could not stand how efeminite his voice was! Hated that...but he had the build for the part.

Don...does not have anything close to the build...nor is he even close to tall enough. So we'll see I guess...I'll refrain until I see him play the part.

cant believe that, he was great in the film, somebody has cocked up big time there

Posted by: JT on October 18, 2008 at 14:31:52

you never know with sequels - not a bad idea to film 2 or 3 installments at a time, that way you keep the actors consistent

Who knew that once Marvel took over the production of their movies they were going to become worse than the studios they had "problems" with. I guess we can see where the problems were really coming from. Marvel should just stick to comic books and let the big boys handle the movies. Terrence Howard IS Rhodes! What a douche move on Marvel's part.

Posted by: Gepeto on October 18, 2008 at 14:34:37

if this is true then it blows, sounds like the big wigs are slowly gonna crap on this franchise

Posted by: Gepeto on October 18, 2008 at 14:37:23

y would they do this u dont mess with something that is already a classic

Posted by: dontfearmereaper on October 18, 2008 at 14:37:59

cheadle is too weak for war machine! It sucks that they been hatin' on the black man once again

Posted by: Yorkiss on October 18, 2008 at 14:38:30

That is totally f****d up, I grew attached to Terrence Howard in Iron Man and expected to see HIM as War Machine and no one else. Jon Favereau and Robert Downey better talk to Marvel's shady asses and get him back as Rhodey/War Machine or I'll start a movement to boycott Iron Man 2. You no, if they didnt want him in part 2, then they never should have cast him in 1. Dumbasses >:(

Posted by: regwec on October 18, 2008 at 14:39:27

HAHAHA They went after a more notable actor. Sucks for Howard.

Posted by: nelson on October 18, 2008 at 14:40:56

marvel ****ing with Norton and now Howard is Rothman head of marvel or something lol

Posted by: Dr. Doc on October 18, 2008 at 14:41:54

screw job!

what the hell Marvel!

this sucks, Howard was awesome and really wanted to play War Machin

this sucks big time

goddamn it Marvel, what the hell is wrong w/ them?

Posted by: Yorkiss on October 18, 2008 at 14:43:11

It's seems the movement is somewhat already starting. Everyone go to as many forums as you can everyday and express you outrage for what Marvel has done, and it will become viral and they will have no choice but to listen. Kinda like what happened with Transformers.

Posted by: The Glove on October 18, 2008 at 14:43:45

Ah, big deal!

Posted by: Yorkiss on October 18, 2008 at 14:46:32

Marvel SUCKS C***KS! Jon Favereau if you dont like sucking C***KS, then you better do something to remedy the situation!

Posted by: The Amazing Spider-Fan on October 18, 2008 at 14:50:53

so now marvel is to balme.....damn it! what's up with the guys at marvel? now i hope terrance's lawyers come into play to get him the part back since they had a legal binding agreement.

Posted by: Bryan Singer on October 18, 2008 at 14:51:43

This is a job for Superman

Posted by: jmralls2001 on October 18, 2008 at 14:52:10

I think he implied there that it's not about the money.
