Exclusive: The Return of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

The summer's just about over and surely one of the clear-cut winners in terms of superhero movies is Marvel Studios' Iron Man, and in the nearly four months since it came out, there's been a lot of talk about its already-in-the-works sequel Iron Man 2. We already know that director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. were coming back, and we presume that so is Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow, since they've both signed multi-picture deals, but what about some of the agents of Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate (S.H.I.E.L.D.) who were introduced in the first movie?

Yesterday, Superhero Hype! talked with actor/filmmaker Clark Gregg about his directorial debut, an ambitious adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's Choke starring Sam Rockwell, which garnered a lot of buzz at the Sundance Film Festival. When we asked him about what he had coming up next, he mentioned returning for the new season of Julia Louis-Dreyfus' hit CBS sitcom "The New Adventures of Old Christine" on which he's a regular, but also that he held out some hope that he'd returning as Agent Phil Coulson in the sequel.

"I was on a plane with Robert Downey the other day, and I was saying, 'C'mon now, I'm feeling Coulson's gotta come back!' so we're open," he told us before joking, "I'm pretty sure Downey will be in the next one. I'm pretty sure Gwyneth (will be)."

But what about Samuel L. Jackson, who made a brief post-credit cameo as the one and only Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D. We spoke to him at Comic-Con International last month and this is what he had to say about reprising the role in future Marvel Films:

"We've talked about it and there's up until 2011 before 'The Avengers' shows up, so he'll show up periodically from time to time."

So while there's essentially no real news if either of the S.H.I.E.L.D. staples will be returning, there's high hopes that Marvel knows they have a good thing if they've already talked to Jackson about returning, and we'll have to see if Clark Gregg prodding Downey will be enough to bring back Fury's wingman Agent Coulson.

Look for our full interview with Gregg about his movie Choke sometime before it opens on September 26 and more with Jackson on The Spirit coming soon!

Samual Jackson should come back. Id be happy with him as superman. "GET THAT MOTHA F%CKIN' GREEN ROCK AWAY FROM ME MOTHA F#CKA!"

Posted by: RadioShackMan on August 29, 2008 at 16:46:22

You know they will want Jackson back as Fury since they modeled the Ultimate Nick Fury after Sam Jackson. The Avengers movie is gonna be cool, too bad we have to wait 3 years for it.

Posted by: spideytracer on August 29, 2008 at 16:47:04

They only went with Jackson because of the Ultimates, and Bryan Hitch's likeness of him as Fury. Personally I think they should have asked Kurt Russell....after all, he's worn an eye patch before.

Wow, what an exclusive!! A story that is admitted to have "no real news"!

Posted by: Tyrone on August 29, 2008 at 16:57:11

Sam was the only choice to play Nick Fury, I look forward to seeing him return, "Nuff Said."

Posted by: Johny B on August 29, 2008 at 16:57:51

they shoulda had a white actor play nick fury, dont get me wrong, samuel l. jackson is a bad ass and i know the ultimate nick fury looks just like him but the real marvel universe is better than the ultimate one

Posted by: anders on August 29, 2008 at 16:58:27

haha agreed arek, article should've been titled "The Return of SHIELD? ...um... maybe?"

Posted by: Liu on August 29, 2008 at 17:05:21

Chiefdoom:
Ultimate Nick Fury is black.. and I think modeled after SLJ.

Posted by: Alexander Quinn on August 29, 2008 at 17:27:35

Oh Johnny B, so misguided...the Ultimate Marvel Universe schools the regular one any given day of the week. I'll take a black Nick Fury and a horny Hulk over a dead Captain America and a 'deal with the devil' Spider-Man any time.

Posted by: Spectre on August 29, 2008 at 17:40:21

Kurt Russell or Michael Biehn aka Kyle Reese from terminator as Fury!!

Posted by: Spectre on August 29, 2008 at 17:42:09

AND PLEASE NO THOR IN AVENGERS!! He should have a stand alone movie..

Posted by: nerdboy20950 on August 29, 2008 at 18:00:29

Am I the only one who noticed that the picture they have for this story shows "SHIELD" as Strategic-Hazard-Intervetion-Espionage-Logistics-Directorate (which is what Marvel calls it) but the article says "SHIELD" is the acronym that has been out of date since the '80s? Maybe they didn't look at the picture when they put it in the article.

Oh, and BTW "Alexander Quinn" I agree with "Johny B" that the real Marvel Universe is FAR better than the so-called 'Ultimate' Marvel. At least the real universe has HEROES in it, not just whiny @$$holes in costumes. For pete sake, the 'ultimate' Cap KICKED SOMEONE WHEN THEY WERE ALREADY DOWN!!! And all the 'ultimate' X-men were copies of contestants on MTV reality shows. I guess the writers have never noticed that real teenagers can be nerds, jocks, etc. like the original X-men from the real universe.

Just my two cents worth.

"Marvel 25:17?
It's the sect, man, on all sides of the selfishness and the tyranny of evil Marvels.

Blessed is he, who in the name of Stan and Jack, shepards the fanboy into the Savage Land of darkness. For he is truly Brother Voodoo's keeper.

And Fury will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and Hulklike anger. On those who attempt to poison and destroy the Inhumans.

And you will know my name is the Nick Fury...

...When I lay my eyepatch upon thee!!!

AAARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!

BLAM! B-BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!!!"

---PULP FURY!!!

If there`s ever a movie on S.H.I.E.LD. I`ll certainly go see it. And I`m sure Iron Man 2 and The Avengers movie will be good.

I`ve said this before as a black person myself I thought that the Nick Fury that existed in the Ultimate Marvel Universe was one of those heroes who never beat people over the head with race like Black Lightning,Brother Voodoo or the Milestone universe.

(That`s why the Ultimate Nick Fury is up there with Black Panther,Bishop,War Machine,Storm,Luke Cage,G.W. Bridge,Battlestar,Jon Stewart,Spawn and Steel as my favorite black superheroes.)

Because as
much as I like Steel and Luke Cage, the truth is that like the Falcon they were characters who too often became stereotypical perceptions of what people thought being a black person meant(Luke Cage basically started off as a blaxpoitation version of a superhero).

That`s why Milestone comics went under, because they pigeon-holed themselves with the whole ''dakota universe black superheroes'' spiel. Then retailers assumed well, outside of black people who else will want to read Milestone Comics?
And comics should be for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy.

Black superheroes are heroes who happen to be black and while any stories involving them have to be acknowledging of that fact they
don`t need to constantly invoke the race card.

And the Ultimate Universe didn`t act as if Nick Fury needed to be involed in redundant storylines that were insulting to the intelligence.

Like a supposed ballistics engineer such as Steel continually fighting super-powered gangs with high-tech weaponry in the ghetto at the start of the run of his series.
Race was something that was a secondary issue for The Ultimate Nick Fury much in the same way that it was for Spawn.
He was a hero period.

Samuel Jackson is absolutely the man. And Liu was right about Chief Doom`s post.

In the Ultimate continuity Nick Fury is black
and for the most part,it`s public knowledge that that interpretation of him was modelled after Samuel L. Jackson.

i find myself losing interest in a black character i cant identify it was the reason gta san andreas was my least favorite oh well though fury should be involved in a least a cameo in all marvel movies
