Favreau on the Iron Man 2 Start Date and Release
June 10, 2008
Just yesterday it was reported that, according to Terrence Howard, filming for Iron Man 2 would start in March of 2009 for a release on April 30, 2010.
Today, director Jon Favreau told fans on his message board that start date "seems unrealistic."
It's been five weeks since the one and only phone call my reps have gotten from Marvel. I know their hands are full with the Hulk and I’m sure they will get into it shortly, as they tell me they intend to. I ran into the Marvel guys at the Hulk premiere and everyone sounded eager to get to work on IM2.
I am concerned, however, about the announced release date of April 2010. Neither Robert nor I were consulted about this and we are both concerned about how realistic the date is in light of the fact that we have no script, story or even writers hired yet. This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation. It might be better to follow the BB/DK, X/X2 three year release pattern than to scramble for a date. It is difficult because there are no Marvel 09 releases and they need product, but I also think we owe it to the fans to have a great version of IM2 and, at this point, we would have less time to make it than the first one.
He's answered many more questions from the fans and you can read his answers here!

WAR MACHINE or ARMOR WARS for story basics/plot with a touch of DEMON IN THE BOTTLE and Titanium Man or the Mandarian thrown in for flavor! Tease with various cool armor concept designs (HULK BUSTER ARMOR).
Dude how hard is it to come up with a decent Iron Man sequel? It is a cake walk!!!

It was my understanding from imdb.com that the next movie was Captain America, and or Nick Fury. hmmm.

Yeah that would be awesome, hopefully he dosent do what they did in Spiderman 3 where they had a parade for Spiderman, because at the end (look away if you don't already know) He says he is Iron Man to the press, so wonder what happens with that

I would love to see IM2 in April 2010, but it does see really quick seeing as how they don't have a script yet...
What is going on with THOR? I want to hear more about that film, isn't it supposed to be released in June 2010? At least with IM2 you have a cast and set and props built, in-placed, and designed. But all MARVEL has announced for THOR is the director.
So I'm more worried about THOR than IM2...

Personally, this excites the hell out of me. I was just saying the other day how movie sequels are ruined by high pressure release dates and deadlines.
While I'd love to see IM2 as soon as possible, I'm glad to hear that JF and RDJ aren't gonna just plow through it because a studio says so. Kudos to them for putting quality before money.

AIRBORNE,
MARVEL has already announced release dates for IM2 (April 2010), THOR ( June 2010), and Captain America ( May 2011), along with The Avengers (Summer 2011)...
Ant Man is in the works with a director attached, but no word on the release date...

Why is he complaining about scripts? Didn't the cast pride themselves on doing a lot of improv?
He did Iron Man in like 2 years and that's when he is on thin ice...He can probably get whatever resources he needs to have a quality movie in 22.75 months. I mean really...March 09 is like 9-10 months away... Plenty of time to get a good script and pre-production running.
Lets not forget the fact that X/X2 and BB/TDK also had mega freaking casts. All Favreau needs to recast is RDJ, Gwen, and Terrance and sadly...Terrance Howard is the only one that looks like he'll be busy soon.

I don't think its impossible to do it in 2 years... I mean Spiderman and Spiderman 2 were 2 years apart and there were 3 years between Spiderman 2 and 3...
April 2010 is do-able

at the same time, Spider-Man 2 came out two years after the first one... and i'd say it was amazing.

haha good point Soonerroo

Wow, this is the earliest I've ever posted. I agree with Favreau completely. The quality of the final product is often determined by how much the studios force these release dates. If deadlines are emphasized too much, they wont be able to put 100% into these films. I would much rather wait a few extra months for a highly anticapted film than have it released prematurely with a tone of flaws that cannot be undone. If the studios and fan base overlook this logic than we'll have yet comic film to add to the $#!@ list.
Personally, I like most of what Marvel has put out. Fans shouldn't always judge the movies based upon the comics. When looking at the comics, there is almost half a century worth of story telling put into a these characters compared to the 2 1/2 hours worth of time put into one of these films. There is a significant difference here and therefore a significant contrast with how the stories and characters should be handled. So to not get into specifics, I think this is an appropriate defense for a lot the movies that got so much flak (i.e. Daredevil, Spider-Man 3, and both Fantastic 4s').

Did everyone space out!? X-Men origins is suppose to come out May 01 2009. That seems like a big Marvel release to forget!
Posted by: Carlos on June 10, 2008 at 02:29:11
the problem wont be the Release date at all,the question is if they even want an Iron Man 2 in the foreseable future, we got Hulk around the corner with a Rumored Cap America Sighting in it, the Avengers,Capts own movie along with Thors movie.

I agree with Jon.
I would rather have a quality movie than something slapped together.
But I dont want to wait around too long for the sequel.

He probably meant that in terms of Movies from Marvel Studios.

Take a Year Off Marvel! Look, I want to see this **** LIKE NOW too but they rushed X3 and it broke my heart. The fans will wait (despite *****ing) and youll break records because youll have a RABID fanbase eating up QUALITY stories based on characters they love. It's not like you cant afford to spend a whole year making sure you make THE BEST MOVIES YOU CAN MAKE. Iron Man made you all rich, do the fans a favor and take a year to get the best hookers while your crew like Fav and RDJ can do what they do best. We as a fanbase will still be here.

after reading Soonerroo's comments, I really think that people out there are just plain stupid. Let me get this straight: Let's 'recast' everyone. let's make movie suck, so we can have it out as soon as possible. people dont think.

well 3 years seems very far away for another iron man movie but if its for the best then oh well
!!!IRON MAN f****** ROCKS!!!
sorry had to say it

@Carlos
of course they want IM2 in the foreseeable future. What's making you wonder if they're even questioning whether or not they should make it?
@Mick
Stop being an *******, you read it wrong. He was clearly saying that the X-Men movies had large casts of characters that needed to be cast every time they made a new movie, or that they had many actors different schedules to contend with when making the movies. Then goes on to say for IM2 all they have to do is cast RDJ, Howard and Paltrow in the movie, so it shouldn't be too difficult to work with their schedules.
After reading mick's comments, I really think that people out there are just plan jerks.

i agree with JF, 3 years is better preparation rather than 2 years because it will give them more time to prepare for a great sequel and not just a sequel that was thrown together by the studio... Marvel did a great job picking out the actor and director for the film.. don't "F" it up.
As for Spider-Man.. yes it took Sam Raimi 2 years to make SM2 after the first one, but the reason why it was so great was because he didn't rest after making the first one.. he still kept busy working on the character.. and it isn't entirely Sam's fault about the outcome of SM3, it was the producers who want to force Venom into the film.. Yes the fans want to see Venom but we wanted it Properly, not some black suited Topher Grace..

i think 2 years time is a short period, but many other sequels were made in 2 years.spidey 2 for instance.could they be waiting to see how hulk will do in the box office?i think prep will definitely start soon.as for storyline,i'm up for armor wars.finally i think it was a bad move to reveal tony stark that he's iron man.they shouldn't have done that.

Do you WANT them to rush the movie out?!? Don't be an idiot. Rushing these flicks is how you end up with the likes of X-Men 3. Give the cast and director/writers time to fashion a more even bigger and better than the first one.
