Will There be a Third Hellboy?
Source:Variety
September 4, 2008

In an article at Variety, Guillermo del Toro says that a third "Hellboy" movie is not out of the question, but it would have to wait a long time due to his commitments to "The Hobbit" films and more:

Meanwhile, del Toro is awaiting word on whether U will embrace a follow-up to "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army." The big-budget film opened in the heat of summer and fell short of blockbuster status in the U.S. but has performed well overseas.

"I think they'll decide when the last euro hits the piggybank," del Toro said. "We laid the groundwork to have a magnificent third act. I’d like to return to an action franchise with 60-year-old actor Ron Perlman, because he’ll be scratching at that age when I get to it."

Langley said the studio is interested and may work with del Toro to add a TV series and online segments to broaden the following before making the series finale.

Hellboy 2 was great, the reason it fell short at the box office was their own fault... Opening a week before Batman, what a stupid idea that was. X-Files made the same mistake.

I hope there's a third film.

hellboy 1 was ....eh ok......but hellboy two really blew me away. Hope that a third would be even better

I'd have to agree the box office timing was a shot in the foot for them.
As entertaining as Hellboy is, I'm weary of third films in trilogies these days. Being stung with X-Men: The Last Stand and Spider-Man 3... I'm not getting my hopes up for third installments.

A third film would be cool, the first two were pretty awesome.

I wasn't to impressed with the first Hellboy. It was all new to me. But then after a couple years I re-watched it and really liked it! The second movie was incredibly creative and I think it will garner much more respect as the years go by. Fingers crossed for the 3rd one!

I liked the first two so bring it whenever you can get to it. Do the Hobbits and come on back. Well, skip the second one, there wasn't even a book.

I'm sure a lot of you will hate me for this, but I just don't care for the HELLBOY movies.I know in the past, you guys have blasted me for not knowing about the character and for not reading the comics.I recently watched HELLBOY 2 on-line,just to see if I would like it.And sorry to say,I didn't.I felt just the same with the first HELLBOY movie. He's just not much of a superhero to me.
I mean,he gets stabbed so quickly in the second movie and then he's about to die.Give me
X-Men anyday of the week.I just don't see the cool superhero stuff that I get from X-Men and Spider-Man when I see HELLBOY.I mean, when the Sin City movie came out,I've never even picked up the graphic novel and read a page. But I loved the SIN CITY movie. So just because I haven't read a page of HELLBOY doesn't mean I wouldn't be able to enjoy it.So,whenever this 3rd HELLBOY movie comes out, whenever the heck that will be,I can defintly wait...I know you hard core fans love it and cherish it,and by all means, you should. It's for the fans of HELLBOY.I'm always gonna stick with SPIDEY and the other MARVEL heroes. But HELLBOY...nah....
I'll be saving my money when that DVD comes out.But I will be buying IRON MAN,THE INCREDIBLE HULK AND THE DARK KNIGHT on DVD.

re: Metal Mike

I'm not here to blast you or criticize your opinion of the film, comics, whatever. But just because Hellboy is a comic book doesn't mean he has to be a superhero...which he really isn't. He's dropped into extraordinary circumstances and lives in a world where fantasy elements are commonplace. This is the draw of the comic book. Honestly, I didn't care for the first film much even though I was a huge fan of the books at the time. The second film, despite the fantastic special effects was just a cut above that.
Really, the Hellboy films are mostly action films in a fantasy setting. The comics go several pages without any action, and the fantastical elements are played out in the foreground rather than in "ooo, ahh" moments like HB2.
Hellboy isn't for you, that's cool. I get it. But I wouldn't compare him to actual superheroes like Spidey or X-Men. Also, with Sin City, you wouldn't have had to have seen a single page of the book to enjoy the film at all. It's all literally translated in the film (well...those three stories at least).

Hellboy 2 was The WORST....bad bad...

Posted by: Thatguy on September 4, 2008 at 08:18:30

To Red Wolf,

Then why the heck are you on a Hellboy forum if you hated it!?!

Posted by: My shoes are on fire! on September 4, 2008 at 08:48:32

The 2nd film though visually amazing sucked bcause of the singing segment, rubbish relationship slowdown beyween Liz and H'Boy, the stupid lookin teenage H'boy in the begisnning and finally the grainey god-awful quality of the print that I viewed at the cinema!

Posted by: My shoes are on fire! on September 4, 2008 at 08:52:12

I should also add though that Del Torro is an amazing film maker, I love Mignola's Hellboy and other creations and Hellboy 1 rocked and finally I will by the HB2 DVD as I loved it as well as hated it at the same time. PS, you all rock!

Posted by: BigPine on September 4, 2008 at 09:18:50

I think they should bring out the detective side of HB. He has all of these witchcraft type gadgets at his disposal but never uses them. The movie was good, however predictable.

I loved Hellboy 1 and 2 and I hope they get to make a third.

Posted by: asspatties on September 4, 2008 at 11:59:00

Hellboy 3 will probably be about what the Angel Of Death was talking about in Hellboy 2. It's the inevitable. Hellboys fate is to destroy mankind.

Posted by: Stumblin on September 4, 2008 at 12:15:37

I really enjoyed Hellboy 2, but personally I still like the first one more. I hope the second one has a bit more dark humor in it. The second movie seemed too light and fluffy in a few areas. Regardless, I hope that the third movie comes about, I still have mixed feelings about the twins though...

Posted by: Stumblin on September 4, 2008 at 12:17:14

EDIT:

"I hope the *third* one has.."

Sorry for the double post.

Posted by: Tighelander on September 4, 2008 at 12:21:53

I really liked the first, but the second not as much. It seemed like they had to rush to tell all of the subplots. It would have been better if it was a little longer.

Posted by: Mr Imagination... on September 4, 2008 at 12:36:20

The reason Hellboy failed is that it looked more like Pan's Labyrinth and less like Mike Mignola's kick ass art!.. go back to mikes art and get your own franchice del toro!!!

Posted by: The End SA on September 4, 2008 at 12:41:49

The release date really did crush it, if they had left it in it's original spot which Mummy 3 ended up in it would have crossed the $100 million mark.

god yes make a thrid one, the golden army rocked! but do it quickly before ron perlman gets any older!

Posted by: jrobert on September 4, 2008 at 13:04:19

Hellboy 2:The Golden Army did well enough to merit a sequel. The Hellboy films are great fantasy action-adventure popcorn movies with great special effects and brightly colored prosthetics and make-up that just leap out at you on the screen.

Seeing as Del Toro has to commit to the Hobbit for about the next four years it may take some time and I would love to see a third Hellboy film.I actually would like to see Ron Perlman play Hellboy when he`s 60 years old. There are certain types of characters in comics that are set up in such a way they can be played by older actors.

For example and this is relevant to the post- Ray Louis Stevenson is 44 years old and playing Punisher in the upcoming War-Zone film and Robert Downey Jr. is 43 years old and he just played Iron Man ,is returning for a sequel in 2010,possibly a third film and hopefully even the Avengers movie. And I`ve always said if they ever make a new live-action Dr.Strange movie the actor they cast could be in his late forties or even somewhere in his fifties. Ron Perlman is so well covered in make-up and prosthetics as Hellboy it becomes very hard to tell how old the guy is.Ron Perlman actually looks younger in the Hellboy garb than he does out of it.

Obviously a 60 year old actor couldn`t play a character like Superman,Batman,Spider-man,Captain America,Thor and so on. But with roles like Iron Man,Punisher,Nick Fury(Samuel L Jackson will be 60 this year),Dr.Strange(if they ever make the movie) and Hellboy having a older actor play the character lends a certain depth and gravitas to these characters that you wouldn`t get if a 20 year old were playing them. It`d be harder to believe that say,Tony Stark is this mult-billionaire,arrogant weapons manufacturer who has lived his life and found redemption if he were 21 or 22 year sold(even though Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire founder of Facebook is only 24 years old,it`s still harder to believe in because any other real-life examples of that are next to non-existent).Ron Perlman fits the role of Hellboy like a glove.

The only downside is the older a actor is when the franchise starts the older they`ll be when the franchise comes to a end like Harrison Ford playing Indiana Jones at the age of 65 in the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull(But Ford, like Perlman is still a bad -ass anyways).

But whether it`s four, five or six years years from now I hope a third Hellboy movie is made I look forward to seeing what next Del Toro`s wildly inventive mind will bring to life on the big screen.
