Big Red Sees the Green!
July 13, 2008
As the fifth comic book or superhero-based movie of the summer, Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Universal) was coming into the weekend with questions whether it might beat Will Smith's own superhero movie Hancock (Sony). Another strong marketing campaign from Universal paid off as the second movie based on Mike Mignola's comic character topped the box office with an opening weekend of just under $36 million, a 55% increase above the opening of the original Hellboy in April 2004, as well as surpassing the opening of del Toro's previous dark comic book sequel Blade II two years prior. The movie averaged $11,200 in 3,204 theaters, and it will be vying to make $100 million over the summer despite heavy competition in the next few weeks.
Hancock (Sony) held up well after its 4th of July opening, grossing $33 million in its second weekend for a strong second place. It dropped just 47% from last weekend, bringing its total gross to $165 million and making it the fourth-highest grossing movie of the year after just 13 days.

@ Tali
Actually, w/ Imax already sellong $2million in tickets, I think the Dark Knight will big one of the biggest movies of the year. The promotion alone for this flick has been nothing short of a sprawling monster. So i think it'll match Iron Mans release or at least come close. I'm not sure it'll do better, but it just might.
Can't wait to see Hellboy2, it looks fantastic, way better than the 1st. Hope it's as good as everyone says it is

This was a great movie. I didn't really like the original much, but this one was much better. Deserves the money and better make it quick. With TDK next week, this will fall rapidly off the radar. What a stupid release date. They should have waited until mid August and let the TDK frenzy settle.

@ un real101 No she meant Hellboy will have a tough time during the release of TDK. Your just so eager to defend Batman

I can't wait to see this movie. Guillermo del Toro can count on at least 2-4 more ticket sales with my family. :)

****SPOILER ALERT***
So I liked it but I ddnt like the idea of Hellboy being a dad... It just doesnt fit him... Its like Superman Returns all over again, but I thought it was cool to give Superman a son just so it actually gave him a weakness (besides kryptonite of course...)
Also, the ending could have been a lot better.

Not bad! Though next week everyone will fall in front of TDK but still.. I'm happy HELLBOY is doing this good :))))

Worst release date ever, Hellboy II would of made a Hell a lot more money in another release slot. Sorry to say it, but there may as well only be one film on at all theatres next week as Batman will own everything.
Biggest opening ever.

We all agree that Hellboy is a great movie franchise. If you are Marvel or DC fanboys, you still go and see this, because we can't get enough of Hellboy goodness. This movie is on mutual ground for comic fans unlike Hancock which is a turd in a Will Smith wrapper.

Ouch. It did worse than Sex in the city. I bet the LOTR people are getting nervous.

" I bet the LOTR people are getting nervous"
Do you even know what you're talking about? If there is one franchise out there right now that is bomb proof it's going to be The Hobbit.
The movie cost 85 million to make and it's already made 35. It will make over 100 million which will be better than the first one. The Dark Knight is going to eat up some of it's money, but not everyone is going to be able to get into TDK this weekend so they will spill into Hellboy. It will probably make about 17 or 18 million next weekend, which after you take into account the weekday totals will have it at about 65 million by the end of next weekend. That means it will beat the original film by A LOT.

Nah, Guillermo del Toro will still make The Hobbit, come on

my post was meant as an answer to Batrman's Stand In's one
Posted by: Batrman's Stand In on July 13, 2008 at 15:32:09
I love it when people do the "oh, it only cost 80 mil to make", It still hasn't made a profit yet. It's a bomb. Just accept it.

i havent made it out to see this one yet, but with all the great reviews for it im going to have to check it out
Posted by: Big Red on July 13, 2008 at 15:44:57
WHats with these guys?
I love Batman and i know TDK will rule all other movies, but come on guys. Hellboy 2 was good. Cant we just be glad this movie is doing well and hope this franchise continues as it should.

Batrman's Stand In, are you aware that it's not being pulled from theatres just yet? I think it has a chance to make some more ;)
Posted by: Batrman's Stand In on July 13, 2008 at 15:47:40
It will be like the Hulk next week.
Posted by: Red Gobbo on July 13, 2008 at 15:55:38
"It will be like the Hulk next week."
So it will have more than made it's money back by next week? And you think that's a "bomb"?
Hmmmn, intersesting.

can you iagme batman vs hellboy who will win i bet it batman he got the gaget
Posted by: Kranon on July 13, 2008 at 16:08:09
It is a terrible release date -- I've seen saying that for weeks at work (I work at a movie theatre). The movie can be the best thing ever and it won't stand a chance past this one week encounter. I was thinking a week or two after Mummy 3 would have been the best placement. Nothing is going on in August.
Posted by: Batman's Stand In on July 13, 2008 at 16:09:32
It's just a sequel we didn't need.
