Edward James Olmos on The Green Hornet
Source:Los Angeles Times
September 29, 2009

The Los Angeles Times got a chance to talk to Edward James Olmos about his character in Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet and how the movie is progressing. Here are several clips:

Olmos' character works alongside James Reid, publisher of the Sentinel and father of Britt.

"We're the backbone of the paper," he said. "Things go awry, and I end up having to try to sustain what's going on in our lives. And of course the Green Hornet doesn't make it any easier. I don't want to give anything away."

Chow is out as the new Kato, and Taiwanese actor Jay Chou is now in. And "Inglourious Basterds" antagonist Christoph Waltz -- not Cage -- will portray Chudnofsky, the Green Hornet's nemesis.

"It took a while, but things are finally coming together," said Olmos, who revealed he has one major stunt in which he gets zapped. "I think it's going to be very exciting. People will find that it's different than what they expect. Seth is doing a wonderful job. There's a lot of everything. IT's going to be action-filled, and there's a lot of humor in the situations. It's really a well-crafted piece of work. Hopefully people will enjoy it and we'll have a few of these films."

You can check out the full article here. The studio is planning a December 17, 2010 release for the Michel Gondry-directed comic book adaptation.

I'm so unsure of what to think of this... I'm going to see it regardless though, my Dad has been waiting for this movie for decades.

Who knew that a better class of criminals would also include rancid douchbags?

Rich-E-Rich: No.

I really do hope this movie turns out well but I find it hard to believe there will be any quality. I think Rogen's humor is not appropriate for this movie. I find it hard to see him as the athletic, serious hero.

I like Olmos, but you have to say good stuff about the project you're working on. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm waiting for a gloriously campy, bad humor ****fest.

Posted by: Zumwalt on September 29, 2009 at 17:26:32

I don't have a problem with The Green Hornet being campy. It was NEVER anything but campy. It's ok geeks. We can have a sense of humor about super hero's. Tick isn't campy? Come on!

A dark and serious Green Hornet would be a bigger joke than making this thing tongue in cheek. Think about it.

Can we say "hollywood spin"? I knew you could! Edward James Olmos is one of the finest actors of our time but clearly this is to generate buzz this pos need.

Seth Rogen has COMPLETELY MISCAST HIMSELF. NOTHING CAN CHANGE THAT! In fact his efforts to make this look cool are backfiring because he is miscast so bad!!!

What will we be seeing December 17, 2010? TRON LEGACY of course!!!

Posted by: Just saying on September 29, 2009 at 18:26:12

I have to agree with Zumwait- what would suck most would be a straight forward Green Hornet production- this movie will probably be hilarious. The truth is geeks- the joke is on you.

1)Rogen miscast!
2)Rogen's sense of humor all wrong for this movie!
3)Too Campy!

-Who says that Britt/Hornet has to be a pretty boy? Most newspaper publishers aren't that handsome...and the Hornet does wear a mask.
Rogen can pull off being serious...it's called 'acting'...and not just be Seth Rogen wearing the Hornet mask.
-How do you know what he's capable of writing or doing? Just because you haven't seen it yet, doesn't mean that he's not above doing pot jokes.
-Aw, go pitch a tent, make some smores and pee in the bushes while humming campfire songs! The vast majority of anyone familiar with the Green Hornet automatically remembers the 60's Hornet and that series' campness. They're expecting it and just want it to be a clever and fun flick.
Just like all of the Tron fans! They want what they remember. No light cycles? No tanks?
No glowing frisbee play? Sacrilege! If Jeff Bridges wasn't in the movie, they'd cry unholy foul!
They want what they remember, just cooler!

Everyone just has a different definition of 'cool'.
We'll just have to wait and see what Seth's is.
Maybe he'll actually surprise all the Haters.

EJO will play the role as Hornet's father. A washed up superhero at 65 years old, with a shiny bald spot in the middle like friar tuck. With a stoggy in his mouth and a can of miller beer sitting in his green hornet robes and slippers, and a beer belly the size of mount saint helens watching Monday Night Football. His son, Seth Rogen, comes home from a long day at Super Hero HG, "RRRRRRR, how was your day at the office son?" "Just peachy dad, the bad guys got away again." "Thats great son I know you will be that super hero someday, but can you keep the noise down? I am trying to watch the game on the tube.." Son goes upstairs dragging his feet.

WHAT'S WITH THE COMPLATES?! Every time I go to a Green Hornet page, all I hear is "Seth Rogen is a miscast!" and "This movie will suck because it's a comedy film", I so SICK of it!

humor??????????please save me...or this film.

Posted by: BSG on September 29, 2009 at 18:37:21

If Edward James Olmos says it's good, it's good.

Posted by: senorashish on September 29, 2009 at 18:48:52

@ BSG

Do you really expect a major star of a production such as this to say the movie is bad? I mean, it's very rare that anyone involved in the production of a film, no matter how bad it is, comes out and says it's bad. They always paint a rosey picture and say that it's a good film regardless of whether it is or isn't. I mean, I remember Schwarzenegger sitting on Oprah saying that the ending to "Batman and Robin" was going to be -- in his words -- "revolutionary." And we know how lame that turned out to be.

Posted by: EGamb on September 29, 2009 at 18:52:44

I always felt Green Hornet was more quirky than serious.....I think if Rogen plays it right..... he could carry it off......remember....this is not Batman we are talking about......the "Hamlet" of comics.......think more Zorro or Scarlet Pimpernal than that.

Posted by: The Green Sweatbee on September 29, 2009 at 19:23:27

Give Rogen a shot for goodness sake. Maybe he has range. I think he may surprise a lot of people. A comedic actor shouldn't be pigeonholed to only do funny. People didn't think Michael Keaton could play Batman in '89, but he proved so many people wrong. Now when was the last time you saw Keaton doing strictly comedy. Its called acting people. Open your minds a little.

Why do people like Zumwalt keep saying the Green Hornet was campy???? It wasn't. It was never meant to be campy ever!!!!The green hornet is about as serious as any other crimefighter. The tv series with Van Williams And Bruce lee was not campy. It was quite the opposite of Adam West as Batman. The Hornet fought mostly crooks and mobsters. He pretended to be a crime boss, but was a vigilante. The only time the character was campy was when he guest starred on tv's Batman cause that show had a campy tone!

Harlan:"Why do people like Zumwalt keep saying the Green Hornet was campy???? It wasn't. It was never meant to be campy ever!!!!The green hornet is about as serious as any other crimefighter."

QFT

Why do people think Green Hornet was campy? You could argue that it is dated and and some effects might come across as cheesy but the show was not campy! It took itself pretty seriously.

Posted by: Moviepunk on September 29, 2009 at 20:13:37

Well if you now that Stephen Chow is out, how can you be certain this will be good overseas? I feel a bomb coming on. Making a Green Hornet movie is like remaking a Bruce Lee movie cause he was the premise to it. No one wanted to watch the Green Hornet for its COMEDY they wanted to see Bruce Lee do things that no one had seen before at the time. And shame on Hollywood for trying to make 60, 70, and 80s TV shows they even pick all the ****ty ones let me list them for you. Miami vice, SWAT, Charlie's Angels, Bewitched, Dragnet, Dukes of Hazard (upcoming A-Team) just to name a few. Please just leave the TV shows in the past where they belong.

I must ask, what exactly is wrong with humor?

I mean a guy in a green suit is running around calling himself, inexplicably the "Green Hornet" How could you not find humor in that? The only reason the TV show was so serious was because it was the same producer, William Dozier, as The Batman series, and he wanted it to be different!

Batman was campy, hen serious, then campy again, then serious again.

Green Hornet was a semi-serious radio show, then a semi serious movie serial, then a serious TV show, and now an action movie with humor.

completely agree with this guy...

And yet aside from Bruce Lee himself, that very guest star role on the old Batman show is all the Vast majority of people who've even heard of the green hornet remember/care about.

So in the end, Camp, no Camp, it doesn't really matter. Green Hornet is not that big of a deal.

I love Edward James Olmas, but this will suck, Britt Reid is suave and handsome, Rogan is a douce, fat,and a slob and isnt funny, this will make batman and robin look like the dark knight

Posted by: PROWISE on September 29, 2009 at 22:03:04

I"m totally on board with with Harlan ,Toughshell and Xybalba! And senorashish,How can you compare Arnie with Edward James Almos uhhh...dude..

Posted by: Lawrence on September 29, 2009 at 22:33:09

Maybe he was mumbling "crap" that sounded like "crafted". It should have gone like this :

"It's a well crap piece of work " lol

Posted by: Lawrence on September 29, 2009 at 22:38:23

Green Hornet will go the way "Gigli" did in the box office. It will bomb so bad that only mosquitoes, flies and hornets (no pun intended) will swarm theater seats.

Posted by: senorashish on September 29, 2009 at 23:04:33

@ PROWISE

The point I was making was that when promoting a film, actors will say anything to make you go see it. They will say all good things about their film even though they know it's crap.

But when you're sitting in the theater, and have spent your hard earned money for the ticket, the scam will be revealed and you will realize that you were conned by an actor putting on his public face to promote a film. I hope Olmos is right -- that this film is good. But with Rogen in the lead, it's questionable.

I mean, can you imagine "The Dark Knight" being written by Adam Sandler and starring him as Batman? Well, that's the same situation with "The Green Hornet" -- great cast, great director, but the lead actor just doesn't cut it and the fact that they are going off his script is kinda... yeah.
