A classic character of film, television, radio and comic books returns to the big screen in Columbia Pictures' feature film The Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogen as the vigilante crime-fighter. Production is underway on the Michel Gondry-helmed film, which is produced by Neal H. Moritz (I Am Legend, The Fast and the Furious) and executive produced by Michael Grillo (The Accidental Tourist), Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express), Ori Marmur (Evan Almighty) and George W. Trendle, Jr. The screenplay is by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, based upon "The Green Hornet" radio series created by George W. Trendle and shoots entirely in Los Angeles. The film is set for release December 17, 2010.
In addition to Rogen, the film also stars Taiwanese actor-pop star Jay Chou as Kato, Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos ("Battlestar Galactica"), David Harbour (Revolutionary Road) and Tom Wilkinson (Valkyrie). Nicolas Cage is also in negotiations to appear in the film.
Academy AwardŽ-nominee John Schwartzman (Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian) is the director of photography. Production designer is Owen Paterson (The Matrix Revolutions), Kym Barrett (Speed Racer) serves as costume designer and Michael Tronick (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is editing.

I don't usually say this about films I haven't seen but this film really looks like it won't be any good.

I think the thing that makes me really, ummm, uncertain about this movie is how they went from a goofy action comedy director, Stephen Chow, to an indie, feel-goodery cerebral director, Michael Gondry. They have two completely different styles, and I'm afraid the production of this film is going to rubber-band between those two styles and end up feeling uneven and silly. Who knows, maybe it'll come out smelling like a rose... but for the time being, I'm not buying into this franchise.

I remember heath ledger and similar things being said about him as Ryan Reynolds

not watching this. rogen movies are rentals at best.

Took them long enough, but I still think Rogan is a horrible pick for this project, I was actually excited way back when Kevin Smith was said to be involved. But now I'm very unsure of this whole project. Just the fact that they've been talking about it for so long with nothing happening tells me that there are some big-wigs who are very wary of the project too. Not a good sign.

Heath Ledger played Ryan Reynolds? Huh? Actors aside, how often does a director quit a project right before shooting, only to be replaced, and the movie turns out to be spectacular? Sounds to me like Stephen Chow did what Matthew Vaughn did with X3. He signed on to a project which initially sounded REALLY appealing, but once he saw the script, sets, actors, etc. he jumped ship. And so entered the Rat.
I'm not totally killing this movie off, because it could be awesome, and absolutely defy expectations. But with news of it being pushed back to Christmas, and Rogen's indifferent attitude about the production, it's not looking good.

I've stopped getting my hopes up about these old properties getting translated into films. Films like Speed Racer, Dukes of Hazzard & Flintstones were disappointing. Time will tell.
But I love Seth Rogen's work.

Crappy superhero plus crappy actor should equal a good movie why?

I just cant see Seth Rogen as The Green Hornet. He's too damn silly

you people are ridiculous. they hadn't even shot a single thing and you were already condemning it. if you knew anything about filmmaking you'd know that directors drop out all the time, things change and thats that. Its no reflection on the film, everyone is just watching the dam thing like a hawk because its a superhero movie and everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon, not to mention it stars someone doing really well (Rogen) and you sad ****s, twisted by your own failures and inadequacies want him to fail. Its pathetic really. Especially as most of had probably never even heard of Green Hornet before it was announced, yet still act like it's your dearest childhood memory. Oh and darmand, those are big words from someone can't operate the caps lock button properly.

Michael Keaton was a comic actor cast as Batman (complete with the irrational fanboy outrage on show here) and did a fine job and there's nowhere near the same gulf between comedy and seriousness for the Green Hornet as there is for Batman.
Cannot believe the amount of hate being poured on this film for ridiculous reasons. God forbid someone should make a superhero film that doesn't cast some humourless handsome slim actor. Boo-hoo, Steven Chow left. Yes he can do some good comedy action but have you seen Michel Gondry's work? He has incredible ability and is one of the most visually inventive directors working today and yes his work is more cerebral than Chow but to me it's just as funny. He might even make it less slapstick and cartoony than Chow would've and do something we haven't seen with a super hero film before and I, for one, appreciate a more cerebral approach to comedy than Chows CGI slapstick. I'm sure the guy who has been cast as Kato can do all the chop sockey just as well as Chow. Seth Rogen has shown his commitment to the project by slimming down and has said they're taking it seriously as an action film but with some comedy. That's what they did with Iron Man and Hellboy so why won't it work here? Comparing Michel Gondry to Michael Bay is like comparing a McDonalds employee to a michelin star chef.
I'm not saying this will be a great film, but to me, there's a lot more to suggest it will be at least good than there is to suggest it will approach the levels of bad suggested on this board. Directors/writers/actors board and leave films all the time. It's just the nature of the business.

it sounds like that this started as an action comedy with Seth. When the signed Chow to direct and star it started to sound like it might be quite good as such (anyone seeing Kung Fu Hustle will agree).
But now it sounds like they want to make it a serious film but with Seth already contracted to star which doesn't sound as appealing to be honest.
It explains the casting and Seth being indifferent to the project as its probably totaly different to what he signed up to.
If only Chow had stayed, we might have got something quite quirky and intence.

I'm willing to give it a chance. Can't hate on a film without actually seeing the film. Never know - might actually be entertaining. Certainly ain't expecting universal appeal though. Bring it on!

Wow, how misinformed are you. Anyone who'd research it would know that Vaughn left due to personal family reasons. Stop adding salt and pepper to things and making it more flavoured to your personal opinion, then puttin it out there. "The rat" makes an entry huh? Seems like the real rats are the ones who surface from the gutter to spread their own unvalidated opiinon on this site.

This is a slap in the face of Green Hornet fans. Seth Rogen is WRONG ON EVERY LEVEL! Sony has ignored Green Hornet fandom and has dug their own grave. As a long time Green Hornet fan, I will NOT see thius ans encourage Green Hornet fans to do the same!

Gary Coleman could have been cast as the green hornet and it wouldn't matter at all, people only know about green hornet for one reason only...Bruce Lee. Nothing else matters, and since nobody can ever fill those shoes in green hornet fans eyes, the movie will in all ways fail.
Posted by: Tyrone on September 3, 2009 at 10:32:17
@ Lev, There is much truth to what you say. The casting could be perfect, but when it came to Kato whomever filled those shoes would still be in Bruce Lee's shadow. With good reason, but still unfairly so. However, since the casting isn't perfect and because many people feel (including myself) that Rogen is wrong for the part. This film sounds like a stinker. In all fairness, it could be a good time and a good film, but that seems like a real stretch of the imagination to see that. Remember Val Kilmer and George Clooney as Batman? Wrong, wrong, wrong. Both good actors in other films, wrong for that. I believe this is no different. I think Rogen is going to make a sincere film, he wants to do a good job and all of that, but He's still wrong for the part.

The overexcited fanboys have got to stop getting so upset everytime someone calls Rogen for being what he is, not all that talented and horribly miscast for this role.
The fact is, everything about this project has looked like crap from the get-go. And the reason this board exists is so people can voice their opinions about such things.
You don't like it that not everybody agrees with you. Tough. Get a life.

finally! i cant wait! so glad this film is finally getting made! Rogen is the man and one of the smartest dudes in hollywood. this flick is gonna surpass everybodies expectations. so many haters out there. WHY?! i dont get it.
all those idiots who are clamoring for a "dark and edgy superhero film, w/ tons of violence and a film noir feel to it" are just that, idiots. they already made that movie. it actually came out last year, maybe you numbskulls have heard of it, its called THE DARK KNIGHT! why make what would essentially be a lame knock off? you gotta do a fresh take on it and thats just what Rogen, who has a background in comedy, is gonna do. AND EVERYBODY INVOLVED HAS ALREADY SAID THIS ISNT A STRAIGHT UP COMEDY!!! it will be an action flick w/ MOMENTS OF COMIC RELIEF!!! whats wrong w/ them trying a different approach? the original tv series was an action/drama and it only lasted ONE SEASON!!! if their was any superhero out there that is open for re-interpretation, its GH! and average movie goers will have no idea who GH is so making a straight up knock off of TDK wouldnt sit well w/ them. the concepts arent exact copies of each other but they have enough similarities that a TDK knock off would probably turn most people off. but if you show them a movie that is an original take on GH that is different than alot of the superhero (most of which is crap by the way)movies, it will be alot more successful.
why rip on Rogen for tring to do something different? Adam Sandler proved he can make you laugh your butt off and pull at your heart strings w/ flicks like "Funny People" and "Punch Drunk Love"
Gondry is a genius as well and has alot of love for the character, anyone remember when he tried to make this flick back in the nineties? trust me guys, this is going to respect the mythos and everything that has come before while at the same time bringing the characters into the 21st century and adding a whole new fresh and inspired take on the mythos.
And look at that cast! Rogen is the hottest thing goin in hollywood. Tom Wilkinson and Edward Jems Olmos? Nuff said! i admit, they could have done better than Diaz, but every superhero flick has its weak spots in the cast (holmes in Batman Begins, Dunst in Spider-man, berry in X-Men)and hopefully this and "Kick Ass" can stage some kind of comeback for Nic Cage as well.
you people need to be more open minded and not be so scared to try something new every once in awhile

Family reasons are common excuses for leaving productions. Everyone knew X3 was a turkey, including Vaughn.
