boring! despite all the action and good casting, it's lifeless and dull. it really shouldn't have been a difficult movie to make flat, but a limp film it is. i was quite disappointed.

not to think about it...it was entertaining...thats what movies are for...their not supposed to be theater masterpieces

It sucked bigtime.. I think that Star Wars Episode One was even better.. This movie had so much promise. It just was not executed properly

Just got home from seeing the midnight showing, and GI Joe was a great movie.I'll defintly be seeing it again and again, and I'll be getting the DVD when it comes out.I enjoyed GI Joe a lot better than Transformers 2,but that's just my opinion.Destro was very cool and i wasn't surprised how he became to be Destro in the movie.I knew exactly how it was gonna happen. It was cool to see Brendan Fraser in the movie, along with Arnold Vosloo,so some of the cast of The Mummy was in it,no surprise being that the director of GI Joe also made the Mummy movies.Anywho,GI JOe is very funny and action packed...and take it from me,GO SEE GI JOE!

Being a fan of the franchise, I liked it for what it was. Even if they broke away from the source bigtime. It didn't suck like Wolverine 1-4. (I mean X-Men 1-4)

I thought it was just an amazing movie. Stephen Sommers brought my childhood afternoons watching A Real Amercian Hero and playing with my action figures to life. Everything was there. If you grew up watching G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero there is no reason why you should not love this movie. For those of you who are too old or too young to know that feeling, I feel sorry for you. But even if you have no clue about the cartoon or the Marvel Comic book, this movie is just an awesome ride from beginning to end. I loved the origin and back storys of the characters and I am extremely excited to see how Stephen Sommers will develop the relationship between Cobra Commander, Destro, and the Joe team. YO JOE!!!!

Go see G.I. Joe now! NO,it didn't suck. NO,it's not a waste of your money.Yes,Go see it!

Yo Joe!

not enough boobage...

Look...you all sound like a bunch of *****es. The movie was just as good as wolverine, and transformers 2. It's G.I. JOE #1, it weaves everyone together pretty well. Fraiser was a good surprise role. Relax and enjoy it for what it is a Hasbro movie. Very remanisant of the cartoon at some points. 3.75 out of 5. That's my story and I'm stickn to it

THIS MOVIE WAS FUN FUN FUN FUN FUUUUN!

It's leagues ahead of the crapfest that is "Transformers 2."

Not only that, but this movie, like Transformers, was based on a line of cheaply made toys that were easily breakable. Don't expect Shakespear of "The Dark Knight" meets "Saving Private Ryan." Just expect a good old action film that feeds off of the cartoon (and the cartoon was basically bad sci-fi to begin with, so...). GO SEE THIS FILM!!!!

As a huge GI Joe fan that I am...I thought the movie was fun. I would have done many things different but thats just how it goes. The action was great, the fight scenes were well done and the story was just ok. I see the 2nd film going much deeper with more about Cobra and more GI Joe characters.

It was str8. Could've been better but could've been worst too!

I won't go into the plot too heavily in this, but will simply add my thoughts on some key aspects, and my ideas on the good and the bad.
I left the movie fulfilled enough to write my first proper movie review, which probably speaks volumes. I left fulfilled not because it ticked all the boxes I want to see in a movie, but because, more than with Transformers or the Star Wars prequels, I was able to distance the 10 year old me from the 35 year old me and in that regard, if I had seen this movie as a 10 year old, it would have been damn near perfect.

Seeing it as a 35 year old, with adult film going criticisms and ideas I think they have made a perfect film for a 10 year old.

Is it fun, hell yes, and I certainly enjoyed the film probably more so because I can understand why certain things from the comic / cartoon would work on the big screen and why some wouldn't and that's what made the film more accessible.
I am sure the good old talk backers at AICN will be crying into their overused George Lucas childhood ****ogies at this point. However consider this...

Had I or one of the countless armchair film critics at..(insert movie geekdom website name here) written the movie, yes, the backstories to the characters would have been more detailed and grown up, yes the formation of cobra would have been different, the dialogue less hammy and generally the film would have been more grown up, more akln to a Bond film, but Bond films aren't for kids and GI Joe is, and if you can grasp that and that the film isn't made for 35 year old GI Joe fans, then you are in the right frame of mind when you see this film.
The Good:
Keeping the GI Joe and Cobra teams small with a few cameos here and there is a good idea, there were opportunities where more cameos could have been really cool like when Hawk launches the characters into battle, would have been a great moment to see moer of the established Joes rather than some faceless type 'green shirts'. There are a lot of ROC action figures out there that are 'movie versions' of existing characters who simply don't appear in the movie, but thats cool
The special effects, for the most part are very good, there are a few glaring moments of poor effects, but this is SUCH an effects heavy movie, I guess that can be forgiven.
The Plot is 'ok' I think, given the target audience it is spot on, it could have been a little more mature and the target audience wouldnt be lost, certainly in back stories to the characters, but its certainly easier to follow than Transformers 2, keeping things simple and easy to follow.
GI Joe makes sense as an organisation and in the concept that rather than being just another special forces team that is supposedly better than the rest, just because we say so, they use high tech gadgets and weapons. A little more explanation for example why Duke and Ripcord have their codenames before they join the team, just small moments of 'they could have...' but nothing glaring.
The Bad;
Cobra Commander / Rex / The Doctor
I liked the fact that the ultimate puppet master reared his head at the end of the movie and it was pretty cool seeing Cobra Commander and Destro together at the end, however the whole characterisation of Cobra Commander was somewhat hammy and his final reveal was almost as comical as the Anakin becomes Vader and the closing "Noooooo" moments in Revenge of the Sith. It could have been a cool, iconic moment, but both the reveal and design of Cobra Commander lacked any impact, I can accept it as my own thoughts for making Cobra / Cobra Commander work are probably a little too grown-up, I wonder what 10 year olds made of this moment.
Channing Tatum is as plastic as 100 Duke action figures, ok, no one is going for oscars in this movie, but where everyone is expecting the weak link to be Marlon Waynes, Tatum looks the part of Duke, but the guy has less emotional range than the aformentioned action figure.
I am on the fence about Snake-Eyes, again, his backstory could have been modernised from the comic, but the story presented here doesn't really add great depth to the history between Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes, thus there is no real emotional investment when they fight. The all black costume is difficult to determine and make out in some scenes which I can imagine caused the film makers a headache. Yes he was cool, pulled off some cool moves and had some great moments, but I think he could have been cooler.
When you round it up, the bad's are niggly small elements that are probably important to the established Joe fan in me than to the kids and families going to see the movie this weekend. GI Joe is undoubtedly the first in a franchise that, as with any first movie treads carefully ready for the expansion of further episodes.

There is certainly a whole lot more to like about this movie than to dislike and I think, for the target audience, its damn near perfect, well done Stephen Sommers, the challenge now is to ensure that the sequel follows the liniage of sequels that have bested the original and I look forward to seeing what he has up his sleeve for the Joes in their next adventure.

AWESOME!!! It blew me away! Will definitely see it again!!!

Great movie Snake eyes was amazing and the actor who played Storm Shadow should def play Kato in the Green Hornet movie. Channing Tatum did a great job as Duke!!!

Posted by: rome on August 7, 2009 at 03:02:07

Look, the movie was great....The accelerator suits were nice....I enjoyed the movie

Posted by: Infamous on August 7, 2009 at 03:06:20

Maybe it was me...but when Brendan Fraser was in that scene who was he? I know they called him something but who was he suppose to be? I thought the rumors were either Gung Ho or Shipwreck???

Posted by: Carl Grissom on August 7, 2009 at 03:11:51

"their not supposed to be theater masterpieces

Yeah, even though The Dark Knight was. You're an idiot.

Posted by: mcm on August 7, 2009 at 03:13:34

I just saw the movie and have to say it was a fun ride.
Was it perfect? No
The CGI could have been better. If it had been on the same level as the CGI in Transformers II I would rate this movie higher.
The only other thing I didn't like was the Destro Mask and Cobra Commander Mask. Honestly they sucked and many people at the theater started laughing at this scene.
Besides that the movie was good.

Posted by: James on August 7, 2009 at 03:22:28

I just got back, I thought it was excellent. Everything worked, even the new mask and voice for Cobra Commander. Those were the things I thought might not work butthey did. Also it was better than Transformers 2, ALOT BETTER.

Posted by: ian on August 7, 2009 at 03:24:22

It was cool except for the fact that they changed up snake-eyes' history. Would've been perfect if they straight up copied the story of snake eyes declassified. But it was cool and digestable unllike wolverine and the robot heaven in transformers 2. Worth watching.

I think it was EXTREMELY well done and the casting as actually GREAT!!!! Cobra Commander was AWESOME! The best part for me was when he revealed himself! I don't see how in the world people can think this movie sucked. All the fight scenes were freakin action packed and the Cobra Vipers looked sooooo good. The movie was fun and the effects looked amazing. The story was also done well including how they did the flashback sequences. I'm sure there are some hurt fanboys crying about the Baroness' story/orgin but I thought it fit the movie well and am excited as **** to see the Joes trying to remove her nanomites in the next movie and reactivate her! You know it's going to happen! AND I think that is GRRRREAT!!! Tony the Tiger GREAT. Every scene pumped me up for the next. Zartan's role is amazing. I think the actors face and voice was perfect for the part. Just so well done. One more thing some internet kids are going to not like is the surprise romance for Scarlett but I think it worked for the movie and was really cool! Another surprise was how much I liked Ripcord and Breaker. Overall, I give it a 10 out of 10 seriously. I loved the look, the feel, the story, the action, and I thought Cobra Commander was probably one of the coolest cartoon villains brought to the big screen EVER!!!!!
