Video: Larry Hama Talks G.I. Joe

One of the thankful breaks of last week's Comic-Con was a press cocktail reception held by Paramount in honor of August's G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. Joining weary journalists were Snake Eyes himself, Ray Park and G.I. Joe godfather Larry Hama.
Hama, part and parcel responsible for the Joe we know today, served as creative consultant on the new film and, in the video below, talks about his history as the franchise's "re-imaginer" and what the big-screen version is going to mean for the future.

Kid Rock's music in this film automatically diminishes its quality by 80%

Cool video. I think giving Hama a Stan Lee-esque cameo in the movie is a nice touch, too! :D

god i hope the kid rock music is only for the commercial and not in the movie!!!

SHH:
Either stop putting commercials before the videos you put up, or just say outright that there's going to be a commercial first. It seems deliberately dishonest to do it otherwise, as if you're trying to trick us into viewing your sponsor's pandering. If you were just truthful and said in the video description that there's an ad first, where would be the harm?

Wow...all this cool vintage Joe followed by clips of this "movie" is like rubbing salt in the wounds...and Kid Rock just screams G.I.Joe...blah!!

So there you go folks. Larry Hama, the man who practically and single handedly helped to develop the entire G.I.Joe universe, was the creative consultant for this film. Now quit saying that accelerator suits and Marlon Wayans, and Snake Eyes "lips" are raping your childhood. Besides Larry Hama raped you years ago by with Golobulus and Cobra-La, and like many childhood victims of violent and traumatic experiences, you just don't remember it.
I can't wait to see this flick personally. Yo Joe!

Larry Hama: TRAITOR!
Posted by: Wyngarde on July 29, 2009 at 13:15:02
Serpentor-
Pay anyone enough and they will stab you in the back.
I'll bet this would have gone different had they asked Larry about the omission of "American Hero"
But glad to know you look forward to terrible movies. I'm looking forward to not seeing it.

Ray Park is the man!!! I'll check out this movie just because of his involvement! Plus, its looking a little better than I originally though... a little.

Very, very little.

accelerator suits that look Halo-esque, the Baroness w/ rimless glasses (even though that is her iconic symbol), Destro maskless most of the time, Storm Shadow hardly being in his suit, Marlon Wayans, and Channing "Step Up" Tatum as the lead? well i can stand all of that typical Hollywood garbage. BUT IF SNAKE EYES OPENS HIS MOULDED MOUTH TO SPEAK, FOR MORE THAN A FLASHBACK, AND RAY PARK'S ENGLISH ACCENT COMES SPEWING OUT, I WILL FOREVER WISH STEVEN SOMMER'S CAREER TO SUFFER HORRIBLE TRAGEDIES FOR ETERNITY!

THE MOVIE DIDN'T ****ING COME OUT PEOPLE, STOP SAYING ITS GOING TO SUCK!

"Creative Consultant" traditionally doesn't mean much in Hollywood. Though I did hear Hama did some clean up on Snake Eyes actually speaking at the end of the movie--as in Hama slammed the writers for it. Of course, the number of give and take Hama had in the process is unknown. BTW, Hama ain't the "godfather" of GIJoe--he's the creator of the entire franchise. The cartoon's primary writer would be more of a "Godfather".

I wish they would stop showing these videos. It's not going to make people want to see the movie anymore than they already do. These videos makes them seem desperate.

Ah, your all a bunch of ****ing whiners. This movie will be alright.

it's times like these i wish i wasn't such a huge G.I. Joe fan, there would have been a slim chance I would have enjoyed this movie. it's not looking too likely as I still see very little that resembles anything from the cartoons, comics or toys. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow look right, everything else is just using the G.I. Joe name.
Sigh.

Just thought I'd step into the schoolyard and comment on all this childish crap I'm reading. I mean really?! Berating each other and downright name-calling over a film that hasn't even come out yet? There are several people here who just need to either grow up, or get a life. I will now brace myself the onslaught of stupid, whining comments I'm absolutely SURE this will generate.

Everything they appear to have gotten wrong in the trailers, clips, interviews, and so on, will have nothing on Cobra Commander if he looks anything like his action figure. I believe that this movie will have the biggest fan backlash of any comic/toy movie to date. I have never read so many scathing comments in blogs across the web about any other movie before its release...ever. I cant wait for the reaction when this finally comes out..

To Wyngarde (really?...what a lame name that sounds like a harry potter spell)
Really unnecessary and straight up rude to call Larry a "TRAITOR!" as you so brashly put it. He is definitely not a "traitor", and if anything HE was being screwed over by this movie, not you. Just incase you didn't realize, G.I. Joe is being produced as a BIG BUDGET, SILVER SCREEN, PARAMOUNT PICTURE. Do you really think Larry was allowed the ultimate say on how this movie would look or be written? IT WASN'T HIS IDEA TO TURN G.I. JOE INTO A MOVIE, SO PLEASE STOP DISRESPECTING HIM.
Posted by: COLE8.7 on July 31, 2009 at 10:49:06
^^^ In all fairness, if Larry felt strongly enough about how they were trashing his creation, he could have pulled an Alan Moore and washed his hands of it...he didn't...

Excuse me, Jere, but you're (not "your") going to "make fun" of another poster's grammar after saying, "your dumb," to someone? Please. Every aspect of your writing screams third grade dropout. Your spelling, syntax, punctuation, and grammar are atrocious. No one needs a "grammar" lesson from a functionally illiterate twit who mangles the language at every opportunity. And don't presume to speak for, "we G.I. JOE fans," because you only represent the vocal, whining minority. You don't speak for the rest of us, especially those of us who possess the capacity for rational thought. Even if we all shared in your nonsensical views, you aren't qualified, sport.

Well, I have never read the comic and my only experience is with the original toys (the 12" ones) and the campy "G.I. Joe Adventure Team" when I was a kid...so it will be a new and fresh experience for me untainted by faithfulness to the comics. Knowing Larry Hama, however, I trust his judgment as he is one helluva writer and well respected in the biz. Glad for the cameo!
