Byung Hun Lee Starts Shooting G.I. Joe

Paramount Pictures just released the following announcement, which looks to be targeted to the Asian press, as Hun Lee was already announced to be playing Storm Shadow back in January:

On March 13, prominent Korean film and television actor Byung Hun Lee, one of Asia's top stars, completed his first day of principal photography as Storm Shadow in Paramount Pictures' action adventure "G.I. JOE." He joins the ensemble cast that includes Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Ray Park, Said Taghmaoui, Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans and Dennis Quaid.

As big in his native land as he is in other parts of Asia, including Japan, Lee started his acting career in 1991 with the Korean television drama "Asphalt, My Hometown." Since then, he has appeared in several television dramas including "Tomorrow Love," "Police," "Son of Wind," "White Knight 3.98," "Happy Together," "Beautiful Days" and "All In."

Among his feature film credits are Kim Jee Woon's "A Bittersweet Life," Park Chan Wook's "Three Extremes," "Everybody has Secrets," "Addiction," "Bungee Jumping of their Own" and Park Chan Wook's "Joint Security Area." This year he will star in two films, Kim Jee Woon's "The Good, the Bad, and the Weird" and Tran Anh Hung's "I Come with the Rain."

Storm Shadow, one of the most popular characters in the G.I. JOE universe, has a dark and complex history. He was trained by the same Ninja master as Snake Eyes, a member of the elite G.I. JOE team, but now fights against him.

Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, whose previous collaboration was the worldwide blockbuster "TRANSFORMERS," have reunited for another extraordinary action-adventure in "G.I. JOE." From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos. "G.I. JOE" is directed by Stephen Sommers ("The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns") and will be released on August 7, 2009.

Byung Hun Lee is represented by the Endeavor Agency and managed by Charles Pak of BH Entertainment.

I can't wait to see Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow go at it. That's going to be cool.

Casting on this one looks okay, but I think I’ll wait till we see the costumes and vehicles before I get too excited about this one. If Duke rocks a jet pack I think I may be sold though.

i guess the story of this movie is how cobra commander comes to be. as for destro actor Christopher Eccleston plays the part and he is the leader of cobra at this time until they find and create cobra commander.or so i have heard.

Posted by: heath on March 18, 2008 at 15:39:17

new update it looks like actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays cobra commander. you can find the hole list of actors and who they play on imdb.com

Posted by: heath on March 18, 2008 at 15:43:36

so now i am pissed so this actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the little guy on third rock from the sun and 10 things i hate about you. i can not picture this little man playing the all powerful cobra commander. i am happy with all the cast except this one. but who know maybe is is just the voice and maybe you will never see the face due to the mask. only time will tell

Christopher Eccleston as Destro is dead on...he is perfect, as for Channing Tatum as Duke...that was expected, I knew they were going to get a pretty boy for that role, Im ok with that. But Jonathan Price as the U.S. President? For the love of God, a brit is going to play the commander and chief...the movie studios cant find a good decent american actor in his 60's to play the president? jeeeezzz

I want to love this movie so bad, but the casting is hit and miss..... I know, I know-- look at Tim Burtons Batman among other eccentric casting chioces, but COME ON!!!! The little d*ckweed from Third Rock From The Sun as Cobra Commander?!?!? What the...??? And Marlon Wayans? Ugh.

Posted by: Glenn on March 18, 2008 at 16:24:28

you guys tend to forget cobra was a tiny ...puny none lethal criminal he had muscle to do all the work for him...and the guy playing him has grown to become a brilliant indy actor...so he has the acting chops to pull off a great cobra....all u guys have to do is watch his later work for example The Lookout ....as for marlen maybe he dies in the film....i hope

Posted by: woohee on March 18, 2008 at 16:52:04

I feel sorry for him. This movie is going to tank. ...and along with his promising acting career. I love him in 'a bittersweet life.' But stormshadow? At least folks will only see his eyes behind the ninja mask. So, maybe his acting career is safe.

wow OMG,MARLEN WAYNES WTF I JUST CANT SEE IT!!were this even any black j.i.joes???

Posted by: shadoweebright on March 18, 2008 at 17:36:10

I concur, Joseph Gordon Levitt as Cobra Commander? WTF were they thinking? I know there have been movies in the past that have done well by taking chances casting actors and have profited from it(i.e. Heath Ledger in Batman, Will Ferrel in Stranger than Fiction) but there is no way this can end good. I would love to see it work, but it won't.

Posted by: goscorpio on March 18, 2008 at 17:41:41

Huh...Upperkass_G4, do the names Stalker & Roadblock mean anything to you? Yes, there are black G.I. Joe members! And that's Marlon Wayans by the way.

Posted by: Craig on March 18, 2008 at 17:45:45

UPPERKLASS_G4:

Yeah there were black joes, there were also asian joes, hispanic joes, and even girl joes. A black Joe with a prominent part was named ROADBLOCK, but he was a big, muscular, heavy machine gunner, so I don't see what Marlon-f'ing-Wayans is doing in this. Perhaps he plays the "Jar-Jar part" who'll bring a certain UNNECESSARY comedic element to this action movie.

Posted by: Glenn on March 18, 2008 at 17:47:28

what do u guys have against Levitt this guy is an awesome actor stop remembering him as the kid from 3rd rock...hes grown now and come on which cobra u guys are thinking about? the sigma 6 verson? cobra is a small guy and gordan-levitt is the right size

Posted by: Mr. Rational on March 18, 2008 at 19:18:23

It's hilarious how some of you are saying this movie is going to tank. It may not live up to your standards, but guaranteed, people will see it. You're also basing Joseph Gordon-Levitt's acting career off of a TV sitcom he did over a decade ago. Get some brains.

This movie is going to own! I cant wait for this to come out. My favorite character Baroness is going to kick some ass!

Posted by: Christopher on March 18, 2008 at 19:48:37

who is sgt. slaughter in this blockbuster?

Posted by: 20xx on March 18, 2008 at 21:23:53

Seeing as how this is following the comics more than the (terrible) cartoon, I hope they keep Cobra Commander's original backstory and make him a used car car salesman. That will make or break this movie for me.

Posted by: Ramon on March 18, 2008 at 21:36:36

Actually Joseph Gordon-Levitt is taller than the average American male at 5' 10". I think he's a wonderfully talented young actor and that he'll get the role right.

Posted by: Jeff on March 18, 2008 at 23:46:21

Maybe....just maybe....Marlon Wayans will be made up to look caucasion..... again. Complete with blonde hair. My only other beef is Breaker is Middle Eastern in the movie when he was a gum chewin' good ole American boy in the comics universe. The best casting: Storm Shadow, Snake-Eyes and Scarlett. Eccleston should be Zartan, not Destro. Vosloo should be Destro, not Zartan. Vosloo is bald, tall and stocky and perfect for Destro.
