David Goyer Talks Ghost Rider 2
Source:MTV
November 4, 2009

MTV talked to David Goyer about what we can expect for Ghost Rider 2, which he says is "not exactly a reboot," picks up eight years after the first film, and is targeting a 2010 shoot.

"I hate to say it's more realistic, because he's got a flaming skull for a head, but it's a bit more stripped down and darker," Goyer added. "It's definitely changing tone. What 'Casino Royale' was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to 'Ghost Rider.'"

that's the best way to put that these days...what "casino royale did for bond films" because that was EASILY the best bond film.

Sounds like a reboot to me.

Posted by: Tighelander on November 4, 2009 at 12:50:01

So their going to have Daniel Craig star?

Posted by: Shanks on November 4, 2009 at 12:50:29

It would be nice to see a decent Ghost Rider movie.

If anyone can pull it off though it would be Goyer. Oh and the bad guys should look like their comic book counterparts.

Blackheart should look like Blackheart.

Mephisto should look like Mephisto.

Shanks speaks the truth.
The first film was heroically cheesy at times (most of the time).

Posted by: Lawrence on November 4, 2009 at 12:55:50

Seems like Ghost Rider is getting the "Batman Begins" type treatment. I find that interesting.

cage nick cage id like jelly beans shaken not sturd

Posted by: ben on November 4, 2009 at 13:01:38

its a reboot, he just dosn't want to hurt Mark Steven Johnsons dumb ass feelings. But what ever the case NO NIC CAGE, and for the love of god NO EVA MENDES!! get a girl that can actually act and a guy that dosn't look like a 45 year old on a harley going through a mid life crises.

Posted by: Mantronix on November 4, 2009 at 13:07:33

The movie definitely need a moe grittier story the look of the film was fine, the fight scees were poor why do we have to wait for a second film in some cases before we cansee a descent fight scene?

Eva Mendes is a good actress wouldn't have been my choice for a love interest. Would like to see the story about baze meeting wih his mother, and the story of his brother Satan needed to be darker.

Need to see a more gruesome transformation, it was too easy more fear of changing.

So if it's set eight years later Nick Cage should look about 65...great. New GR please.

Posted by: Winston Wolf on November 4, 2009 at 13:33:51

Glad to hear there's a second one. I always say I liked the first one but I just realized I have never watched it again and probably never will. I think I just liked the character. Do it darker, yes. No Nicolas Cage. Eva Mendez naked this time.

Posted by: George on November 4, 2009 at 13:36:48

I think people in film need to stop evoking Casino Royale or Batman Begins. The films never live up to those comparisons.

Remember how Wolverine and Terminator: Salvation were supposed to be like Batman Begins for those franchises? We all know that didn't exactly work out.

I'm sure Goyer will do a great job. I still don't discount Mark Steven Johnson. I actually like his directing style. It's fresh and creative. I do agree about seeing Blackheart in his true comic form, though for Mephisto, seeing Peter Fonda walking around with that skull cain did the trick for me! I do hope for bigger fights, slightly more worked on effects for the skull (though not an easy thing to achieve) and I REALLY want a much heavier metal soundtrack throughout. Bring on Judas Priest's Hellrider and Metallica's Fight Fire With Fire!!!

Posted by: cg3 on November 4, 2009 at 13:51:42

Yeah I liken the Ghost Rider movie with the Dare Devil and Elekra movie, semi lame but OK. Its cool that they are trying to get other comic book characters involved, but seems that it is tough to execute without looking too fakey.

This movie will never work unless it is treated like an actual HORROR film -- and that means a bloody, violent R rating.

That's why the comic books don't sell well, either. They're not HORROR comics. They don't honor the GR for what he is: a demon with his skull on fire -- NOT a superhero.

For those, that don't think GR would market well to an R audience, you couldn't be more wrong. Just look at the Blade movies. They did great at the box offices for what they were: R Rated HORROR films based on a unknown comic book character.

In closing:

1) DON'T have the Ghost Rider do a lot of talking like in the last film (the best of the "Jeckyll and Hyde" monsters don't need to gab to scare: Wolfman, Frankenstein, Ferrigno's Hulk)

2) DO have a burnt out, vagabond Johnny Blaze

3) DO have an R rated HORROR FILM

4) Leave Heaven the hell out of it

...Or you'll have another cheese fest on your hands.

the only things great about the first GR was the effects and Eva Mendes...I am not a huge Nic Cage fan...

Posted by: mojojackson on November 4, 2009 at 13:57:41

In one breath, he says it's not exactly a reboot, then, in his next breath, he says it will be what Casino Royale was to the Bond movies--which WAS exactly a reboot. But considering how he's describing it, it sounds like a sequel to me. If it picks up in the same continuity as the first film, it's a sequel.

The question is, if they're going to make another Ghost Rider film anyway, why not reboot it so they can correct the mistake of making the first film? With a reboot, they could get a more appropriate star, improve the special effects and most importantly, get a better director. Makes no sense to make a sequel to one of the worst comic book movies ever made.

Posted by: gr fan on November 4, 2009 at 13:59:11

If Nic Cage wants to get involved, fine - let him have a cameo (even less screen time than the western-age GR in the first movie) where he passes the mantle on to Dan Ketch or something... but that's it.

Then proceed with the R-rated, supernatural ass-kicking.

If Mark Steven Johnson is involved AGAIN in another C-tier Marvel movie AGAIN, I will destroy him.

Posted by: RealComicFan on November 4, 2009 at 13:59:33

You guys that say nic cage made a bad johny blaze are stupid. he made a perfect johny blaze 1. because nic cage is a big huge fan of ghost rider and has a bunch of old issues so there for he knows how act like johny blaze. and eva mendez was hot so what if she cant act.shes supose to stand there and look pretty so you forum nerds can touch yourselves in your parents basement.

Posted by: batboy999 on November 4, 2009 at 14:09:27

this will suck. who cares about ghostrider? seriously. they had their chance and they made a heap of crap. i will say that i thought cage actually did a decent job. i think he'd be a great super hero. just not ghostrider, because ghostrider is just not interesting. now a sleepwalker movie, that's something i'd like to see. that's something they could actually do something with. but they won't. because not enough x-men cartoon-watchin' spidey under-roos-wearin' wannabe comic fans who flock to these movies on their lame date nights know who sleepwalker is. "hey baby, let's go to freakin' applebee's and then to see that wolverine movie. i hear it's pretty cool, then we can drive home in my dad's midlife crisis corvette that i drive around with my collar popped up to look cool." oh, i'm hip to your game, you mainstreamers.

Posted by: zedin on November 4, 2009 at 14:12:15

Marvel is going to QUICKLY water down all of their characters if they keep rebooting everything every few years.

Posted by: D-Rod on November 4, 2009 at 14:18:29

i say reboot it, and then if it sucks, they can reboot that one. by 2034 we'll have nearly 10 ghost rider reboots, 8 hulk reboots, 4 fantastic four reboots (appropriate, no?) and 27 movies that spun off the x-men films, half of which are reboots

Hey! The last news article about Ghost Rider was also titled "David Goyer talks Ghost Rider"...I hope this film is more creative than SHH's headline writers...we DON'T need a repeat of the first movie!

Posted by: Poorman on November 4, 2009 at 14:24:23

I think this should be one of the first franchises bought back by Disney/Marvel. I'm sure everyone wants back Spider-man and X-men, but those are gonna cost way too much right now. I'm thinking this, Daredevil, and Punisher should be the first 3 bought back and rebooted. Of course while I'm wishing, I'll go ahead and wish for an unlimited supply of money so I can just buy them myself! :P

great news!! call it a rebot, call it a sequel, I don't care just make a kick ass ghost rider movie... the darker the better.
