Chris Evans Talks Fantastic Four Reboot

Two weeks ago, it was revealed that 20th Century Fox has begun overhauling the "Fantastic Four" movie franchise. Akiva Goldsman will produce the reboot and Michael Green will write the script. Variety said in their report that because the deals for the reboot are just getting made, it was unclear if any of the original cast would return.

SuperHeroHype.com caught up with Chris Evans, who played Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the first two films, on the set of The Losers, the adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic book in which he plays Jensen. He was positive about the announcement.

"I think it's great. I'm sure it'll be a great movie," Evans said. "They do that with a lot of movies. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later. 'Batman,' 'Superman,' 'Incredible Hulk.' Sometimes it's a 10-year gap, sometimes it's five years, sometimes it's 20 years. I think there's room to read just the tone in 'Fantastic Four' as it was for 'Batman. You know, 'Batman' took on a very cartoony feel towards the end and even in the beginning. It was a lighter movie, even though it was Tim Burton. It was still a lighter film and the newer Batman's have just been amazing, so I'm all for good filmmaking. If they can go make a good dark edgy 'Fantastic Four,' right on."

But would he reprise the role? "I guess it would depend," he added. "I mean I'm never against revisiting, well I guess I should say not yet, I'm never against revisiting genres or character types. If I played a doctor in one movie I wouldn't be against playing a doctor again if the director was the right director. I think at the end of the day you've got to work with the directors. I do what I do because I like making good movies. It's fun to act but if you just loved acting alone you could sit in your room and act. You could act in a vacuum. You want to make good products. You want to make good films. I love movies and good movies come from good directors and like I said since there isn't this massive surplus of films out there, if a good director offers you a chance to make a good movie, you take it even if you say well I just played a character like that. Who cares? You're a great director. 'Scott Pilgrim,' I played characters similar to that guy but no f*cking way I'm going to say no to this guy. I'm doing your movie. So if 'Fantastic Four' got rebooted and Christopher Nolan was going to direct it and said do you want to play Johnny Storm again, I'd be in those blue f*cking tights."

I like Chris Evans alot and hope both he and Micheal Chiklis would return, but it has to be a good story and a great director. Tim Story just didnt know how to handle the material.

Reboot...do it!! Can we PLEASE get a Dr. Doom that is a BAD ASS! I'm sorry, Dr. Doom shouldn't sound like one of the five guys from 'Queer Eye'! He's EVIL AND A BAD ASS! Can we just get an EVIL Dr. Doom and his origin correct?! For the love of Stan Lee!!! Get it right!!!!!! You can keep Chiklis and Evans...at least they did good!!

I myself remember when the news came out that Chiklis was playing Ben and I about flipped same as I did when I saw Grammer was playing Beast. But Thing felt too much like a rubber costume for my tastes. I always thought the treatment thing deserved would be more organic like the right hand of Doom. There was a concept bust that I loved but when he didn't look like a moving rock it pissed me off.

Only because i never have...first

Rebbot... well... depends on the meaning of the word, Without ignoring the first two, I think it's possible to change stuff and make a good movie, just look at Warren Ellis and Mark Millar runs on FF, there's good material just there, but make no mistakes, FF could never be Batman, not all superheros movies have to be dark, a good story does'nt have to be dark to be good, I also think they should try another nemesis than Doom, or at least (I'm with you Arameth5k)don't make him look like a bad Power Ranger.

I did Like Evans and Chiklis (just look at The Shield) is a talented actor, just give him something to work with...

what in gods name was he talking about, ''since there isnt this massive surplus of films out there...''? am i to believe there is some sort of shortage on? thats just crazy, crazy.

and Rico is totally right that not all movies have to be dark and edgy. i only picked up FF now and again, but i NEVER read it as a weighty book, insofar as sci-fi to me isnt very edgy. it should be fun, but for sure Doom being a puss was the true weakness of the two movies.

reboots are dumb in-and-of-themselves, they are just lazy ways to write a movie. anyone can write/direct an interesting origin story.

Never make a movie about superheroes again. They have all been bad and a waste of time.

Posted by: Punisherxfp on September 15, 2009 at 18:44:54

I just have to say one thing.........FIX DOOM

Posted by: Vaportrail on September 15, 2009 at 19:05:41

To me it felt like they did nail the comic book feel of Fantastic Four pretty well.
Somehow a lot of people forget or don't seem to realize that they are a comedic comic. That's the fun of it.

"Dark and edgy"? Eh.
I could see more serious, maybe take a less straightforward approach to the cinematography and storytelling, but if you throw out the comedy I think you lose the basis of the characters.

They're the Marvel sitcom. Don't throw that away.

Dark & edgy.

hate to say it, but do we have to TDKized every damn superhero movie?

Fantastic Four was silly and fun, leave it at that.

Posted by: ace3d on September 16, 2009 at 05:47:48

why does every film have to be another the dark knight?

Christopher Nolan could make a fantastic 4 movie but doesnt mean his vision would translate well on screen, so chris evans dont know what his talking about

Posted by: kaardinal on September 16, 2009 at 08:40:11

All they need is just a talented, good writer for the script as well as a good director. Any movie can be great if the story is written well. But they should stay true to the characters as they were meant to be. Chris was probably closest to the Torch's character than the others were to theirs. But since they are not asking our opinions on the matter, it makes no sense to harp on other's comments. They will do whatever they want with or without the fans consent.

DOOM.! please make him evil and please please make him an intelligent ignorant Ahole like he's suppose to be.

@Justin. No Justin, that is not the case, but anyone playing the "Mike" game can expect to be banned from posting. Stay on topic.

Everyone wants them to "fix" Dr. Doom and while agree that he was done wrong in the two FF movies the problem is if you do him right he's going to come off like a carbon copy of Darth Vader.

but it was just so fun...

I think for the type of movie the FF films were, were good. It wasn't X-Men or Batman. They're more toward family ratings. I liked the 2nd film a lotore than the 1st 1. I think they should just make a 3rd film & end it on a good note. Not sure a reboot would work for FF. I'm still waiting on an X-Men reboot but done right this time.

Posted by: Justin on September 16, 2009 at 21:12:00

@SHH. Look into the batman segment on the boards under Chris Nolan for Batman3. Read Chosen1's post and ask yourself. Did that really warrent a infinite Ban? Its like we cant even have a discussion or debate on certain issues. Everyone has to be up in arms and say everything is amazing. Comic book fans are no longer in control of thier fanship.

I think Evans did a good job as Torch. I actually enjoyed the movies for what they were and I agree that biggest problem with both was everything about Dr Doom. I don't know about him from the comics but to me the character just never made sense. I didn't like much about Mr fantastic either but Chiklus was much better than expected and Alba is so hot I don't care how bad she acts.

Yeah, Doom done right would be Vader-ish, but that's when it gets really good!

Doom is always battling the team on a physical AND mental level; Reed has to really bust his ass to save the day.

Also, they need to write the story THEN worry about the budget. Massive sets for Latveria, Doombots, LONG battles, etc. would've helped. And FOX... stop giving us short movies!! 120 min. or don't bother!

I am so sick of the phrase 'dark and edgy' being applied to everything post Batman Begins...

And give us space! Give us the Negative Zone and Annihilus!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Brent on September 17, 2009 at 16:24:29

Wow. Folks, we do NOT need a "dark and edgy" FF movie. Not every superhero film needs to be "dark and edgy." I happened to enjoy the first two FF movies; they were better than some, not as good as some others, but I thought they made good money. I'm not sure the whole thing needs to get a "reboot" treatment. A new Reed Richards? Sure. A new Doctor Doom? DEFINITELY! But just go forward and make a good, fun movie and have realistic expectations. Just because a superhero movie doesn't make the same kind of money as "The Dark Knight" or "Spider-Man" does not make them failures.

Posted by: Mogo on September 17, 2009 at 18:08:24

we definitely need a reboot of this movie with everyone coming back except the guy who played doctor doom. First he needs to be darker and he needs to speak with the freakin accent! I wasnt really feeling his hatred towards the FF. I swear if they do a reboot and give the whole silver surfer and galactus thing another go silver surfer better be wielding the power cosmic and not some power connected to his board and galactus best show his face and not show up in some stupid cloud form!

Posted by: Da One on September 17, 2009 at 18:36:36

Give us Galactus!!!

Posted by: sevie on September 18, 2009 at 01:01:01

yes we can it will have to be the skrull empire. the cast should be newcomers with ben being the only household name: the cast should innclude:
mr.fantastic: tim daly
invisible woman:megan fox
human torch:chris evans
thing: brook lesner
super skrull: micheal jai white

Posted by: bookchick on October 13, 2009 at 03:38:22

@sevie
Dude, are you high??? Tim Daly is waaaaaay to f-ing old to play Reed and Megan Fox couldn't act her way out of a cardboard box. While I agree Chris Evans should stay as the Human Torch, BROCK Lesnar is a mediocre wrestler and has no business being an actor. Leave The Thing to Michael Chiklis.
