No Dragonball Movie this Year
Source:Superhero Hype!
March 5, 2008
20th Century Fox has pushed back the studios' big screen Dragonball adaptation from August 15, 2008 to April 3, 2009. On the old date, it was facing The International, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Tropic Thunder and Wild Child, while it is currently by itself on the new date.
Written and directed by James Wong, the movie stars Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Jamie Chung, Emmy Rossum, Eriko Tamura, Joon Park, Chow Yun-Fat, Texas Battle, Randall Duk Kim and Ernie Hudson.
Dragonball is based on the manga created by Akira Toriyama; the work was also turned into a Japanese anime series that played all over the world. It tells the story of an alien sent to destroy Earth, who has a change of heart and decides to join the humans in their fight against various aliens and bad guys.

Not to discredit SuperHeroHype in any way, buuuttt . . . was this actually confirmed by Fox, or is it just something heard from Box Office Mojo? Just wondering.
Posted by: Therefore I Am on March 5, 2008 at 03:35:27
I havent seen anything official, It was on box office mojo but that isnt always the most reliable source for "confirmed" movie news. It's hard to believe that they would push it back a whole 8 months from the initial date. especially since every crew member and actor has said everything is going awesome and they're nearly done filming. I understand pushing it maybe a month or two, or perhaps making it a christmas release, due to not wanting to compete with a star wars film. or if they need more time for post production, but this just seems like a massive delay. we wont know till an official confirmation because as of right now, FOX still has it listed in august 08'.

Does anyone care about this movie?
Bring on The Dark Knight, Ironman, and GI JOE!!!
Posted by: PROLIFIK on March 5, 2008 at 03:47:58
I'm quite glad they delayed it. They're making this too fast. Releasing it in August of this year is way too soon in my opinion. I just hope they're able to make it worth it having that extended shooting time.

omg if these movies are real competition of the dragonball movie it definitely will be crap.
Posted by: Craig on March 5, 2008 at 04:39:47
I'm sure it wasn't only because of the "competition" they need more time to create the musical score, 2nd Unit still needs to film, more re shoots, SFX VFX CGI, and create their advertising plan. I'm glad they rescheduled !

August and September are lousy movie months typically. Kids are going back to school; summer is almost over. Most of your summer blockbusters come out much earlier. March and April is the pre-summer window, and usually the first possilbe shot for an action movie like Dragonball. So if they can't get it out before the end of summer there really is no sense in releasing it until spring.

Live action DBZ will suck. It's going to be Mario Bros. for the 21st century.
Something like Dragon Ball Z has no business being live action. They should have went the Beowulf way. This set back is good, more time not to look at it.
Posted by: zero on March 5, 2008 at 05:49:09
Even doing it like Beowulf won't save it. Casting is completely irreleant as well. I just can't imagine it as live action.
Maybe my imagination is limited.

aaawwwww man! now i'll have to wait until 2009 to ridicule 9 year olds with hard-ons for terrible japanese cartoons about aliens who turn into monkeys and 18 episode long fight scenes that end up with the protagonist dying then being brought back to life more times than jean grey.

And hopefully we will NEVER see an American Dragonball movie.
Ever.
Ever ever ever.
EVER.

maybe now they will have time to actually read the manga and understand his true spirit

Alot Of People are saying this was gonna be a flop of mortal kombat style proportions, and now its prosponed, i thought august was a bit much for it to be done and dusted by, with post production and cgi ect, but a full year, god sakes, if they ruin it after all that time, ill slit throats!

I think its a good idea to push back. Gives them more time to polish it up and make it shine. It's probably gonna still be crap, but I will see it. I'm an old fan. I dont know how it will translate well later into the series, but Stephen Chow is aboard. Kung Fu Hustle was a little reminiscent of DB with the super strong characters and the big baddie battle at the end. I think if DB has the same feeling as Kung Fu Hustle, with the action/comedy and still captures the spirit of Dragonball, this movie will be worth the wait.

I love Dragonball, if people think that dragonball sucks, well they don't know were good story writing and anime is all about, and I feel sorry for them. Its going to be classic, I hope they have some looks on Vegeta and I hope they exactly talk about the dragonballs themself & Shenron. I'm glad its pushed back, I felt like it was too much of a rush anyways, I hope Goku reaches the level of a super saiyan.

god damnit. i had sutch a huge build up for this like avpr i was so anxious and now because of the competition and fears it wont make any money theyre poponed it. for ****s sake i hate the studio execs now . screw the writers strike we should have the costomers strike where we dont go to the cinema to stop this happening
Posted by: pucky on March 5, 2008 at 08:22:25
Based on the pictures we saw a few weeks ago this movie is going to be no better than a C-Class piece of garbage.
