Joe Quesada Talks Captain America Script
October 20, 2009
Comic Book Resources attend the Big Apple Comic-Con and listened in on Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada's Q&A at the event. While he wasn't able to say much about Spider-Man 4, he was able to give an update on The First Avenger: Captain America:
"I've seen a couple of outlines and an initial screenplay, and it's going to rock everyone's socks off," Quesada said. "It's very unexpected, the kind of movie it is." He added that "Captain America" sets up The Avengers in "a fantastic way" and also mentioned that there is an undisclosed wish list of actors to play the superhero.
Paramount and Marvel Studios are planning a July 22, 2011 release date for the Joe Johnston-directed "Captain America," which will be followed by The Avengers on May 4, 2012.
Thanks to Screen Rant for pointing the way.

I really want to be hopeful about this flick, but Joe's comments are always some form of "what we're doing is awesome," so they hold no weight.

PLEASE GOD, Marvel, Disney, and anyone else involved, do NOT let this movie suck!
Posted by: Calcifer on October 21, 2009 at 00:54:46
I'm hoping for either John Barrowman or Nathan Fillion for the role. I'm sure there are other actors who can play it well though. I can't wait for the announcement to finally happen.

Of course, anyone involved in the making of a major blockbuster always says it's really great, so I don't know how much of Quesada's praise is genuine and how much is promotion.
But I think Johnston has a lot of potential as a director and Iron Man and Incredible Hulk make the Avengers-related films look very promising. They're actually the movies I'm looking forward to the most in upcoming years. I love the idea of a shared comic book movie universe finally coming to the silver screen. Before these Avengers movies, the closest we've come is George Clooney mentioning Superman in Batman & Robin and a mention of him on the radio in Supergirl way back when. These films should give the non-comic book collecting public a good idea of how various superhero myths connect to each other on the page.
But dammit, disclose the wish list at some point! Even if it's not until after they cast the lead, I'd love to know who they're considering. Are my picks, Chris Pine or josh Duhamel on the list?

Ohhhhh man, I'm so psyched for this one. I really hope it's primarily WW2.

More on that wish list please, I would love to hear some of the possible actor choices for Captain America.
I wouldn't mind seeing Thomas Jane as Captain America.

I keep remembering that straight to video version of Cap and can't help but think that it is a mistake to try and make a film out of his story. Iron Man was an awesome movie in it's own right, but still. Remember when Dolph Lundgren was the Punisher and that franchise kinda fizzled even with the war zone flick.
I have doubts and hopes. Good Luck Marvel!

Well disclose SOMETHING already, dammit! Even some rough costume designs would do for now!
I have faith in Marvel Studios and Joe Johnston! The First Avenger will rock!

and please no more Fantastic Four movies. Not until the have a better story and somebody who isn't in a foam rubber Thing suit.

Yeah....
I love Nathan Fillion, but he's Malcolm Reynolds and Captain Hammer, not Steve Rogers.
But my suggestions aren't any better, heh.
Of the big stars, as much as I really am sick and tired of him... the default Brad Pitt would be perfect casting, imo. But I'm not stuck on him in the least.
Here's something outrageous.
Gerard Butler. Yes, he's Scottish. It would be like putting Sean Connery in the role, with dyed blonde hair.
Chris Pine was a fantastic Kirk. I don't want to see him as Cap because I think it'd take away from the role, similar to the way I think Christian Bale was a terrible John Connor (imo, he should have played Marcus), after adjusting to him as Batman.
I sincerely hope Matt Damon stays away from the role... he's a good actor, but there is no aura about him that proves he can take on something as big as Cap.
So yeah, not sure.

Honestly i think Daniel Craig should play captain america. Who else has the look to lead robert downey and other actors? Plus he's shredded as **** in his movies so that would help also. what do u guys thinks?
Posted by: Shayera on October 21, 2009 at 01:22:12
@DownUnder
Wow. Now that you mention that, I'm seriously thinking about Neil Patrick Harris, bulked up with an additional 50 lbs of muscle. Don't think I'm joking. Actually, he'd make a great Bucky, I think.
In COMPLETE seriousness, however... check out the cast of X2. The most religious character in the entire movie was played by Alan Cumming. The greatest supervillain portrayal in a Marvel movie was brought to you by none other than Ian McKellen. And THAT was 20th Century Fox!
Let the media write what they want. If that's the focus, then hey, no big loss.

finally some kinda new's .
this as well as thor have to be top notch.

In case you all forget, Cap is still like mid 20's when he is thawed out and is American. You're naming all these old ass dudes and a Scot. Seriously, it's bad enough a Welshman is playing Batman (despite how good he is). I would think they would be looking at younger American actors, even if American actors suck at a young age.

Shayera:
Speaking of actors who got their start playing pencil neck kids, I remember seeing some poster somewhere suggesting Anthony Michael Hall for the role. Sounds silly at first, but take a good look at him in The Dark Knight. What do you think? Possible?
Posted by: ak on October 21, 2009 at 01:43:20
Justin Hartley
Posted by: Shayera on October 21, 2009 at 02:00:03
@mojojackson
Actually didn't recognize him at any point when I saw The Dark Knight. Apart from that, I only recall seeing him in Edward Scissorhands.
I don't really see it.

what do you guys think about jon hamm as cap?
he is a hot name right now with mad men. and im pretty sure cap will have that old-timey feel.
Posted by: DocLathropBrown on October 21, 2009 at 02:19:00
The only problem is that if Joe's in any-way involved, he's gonna have Cap sell his soul to Mephisto to save Bucky's life....
