Louis Leterrier Talks Captain America, Avengers
Source:Los Angeles Times
August 10, 2009

The Los Angeles Times recently spoke to The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier and got quotes about what he's seen of The First Avenger: Captain America and his dream for The Avengers. Here are several clips from the article:

LL: ...I have seen some of the design work they’re doing for Captain America and it looks amazing. It’s a period piece and it’s like “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and with more gadgets...

GB: Well that makes sense, I know Feige and his team turned to Joe Johnston because of his art direction work on “Raiders” and the fact that he directed “The Rocketeer.”

LL: Yes, exactly, so it’s “Raiders” meets "Rocketeer” and “Saving Private Ryan.” It’s going to be so cool.

LL: ...You know, you asked about my dream, I’ll tell you my real dream: To work with Joe Johnston and [“Thor” director] Kenneth Branagh and Jon Favreau and make like a triptych. We do four movies. We release them one a month for the summer. Or even every two weeks or three weeks. And the whole summer would be Avengers summer. So we do it the way they make television shows. One story arc but told in installments by different directors. So all of the directors that touch part of the Avengers world would do a part; we could make the movies shorter, maybe less than an hour and a half, and we use the same sets and save Marvel money. I would love to sit around a table with all of them a kick around the story. That’s my dream.

Consider me absolutely sold for the Captain America movie now; I had no idea they actually where making period piece, that's an excellent decision. Setting it during WWII is great way to make it stand out from the crowd.

Thanks, this is the kind of info i expect from you SHH.

Amen Dr. Nud Buggets.
THIS is the kind of updates I can get excited about. Is anyone else tired of the G.I. Joe hype on this site? Are they technically superheroes?
Is this "COMIC BOOK Hype" or is it "SUPERHERO hype"?
To me, there is a BIG difference.
His idea of a joint effort and a movie coming out each month by different directors in one summer is interesting, but I'm not sold. The recent DC "Gotham Knight" DVD had six different directors kind of going on a continuous story-line (if you read the book anyway) and it wasn't all that great. But ultimately, I don't really care, to see Captain America done right on the big screen is going to be an honor to be sure!

Im so hyped to see Capt America. It sounds very promising and I would love to see the Avengers movie, to see all those heroes on the big screen! wow! cant wait

The incredible hulk was completely underrated. Another installment would be awesome!

Posted by: Handsome_Villain on August 10, 2009 at 01:52:27

OOooOooOOhhh Snap!!!, that's the **** right there. Imagine a whole summer entirely set just for the Avengers. I hope the really introduce more characters, and a few more from some of the previous marvel movies. what would be better than an avengers movie then a Marvel Universe Movie.. ;)

Posted by: caabrae on August 10, 2009 at 01:57:57

I love hearing the film makers think out loud. The whole tryptich directing idea is really appealing to me and would be fair to all the directors. That would be the hugest event in superhero movie history! And the period piece Captain America sounds beautiful!

Posted by: spiderfan on August 10, 2009 at 01:59:47

It all sounds good and all, but making the movies shorter? That would kill them all. The using the same set pieces does sound incredible. I hated how the Harry Potter movies changed the school setting with each director. Make the movies long (two and a half hours) and keep the consistency of sets, and connect them with the same actors. This would be the true dream of every fanboy.

Posted by: DownUnder on August 10, 2009 at 02:01:39

Now THAT would be a truly revolutionary approach, and a way for Marvel to totally OWN the summer box office.

Three or four great superhero flicks one after the other, each with its own story but also dovetailing in as part of a larger story arc.

I like it all, right up until "make the movies shorter, maybe less than an hour and a half". Story should dictate running time, not the other way around. I hate when they chop up a movie because a director/studio prefers a certain running time (Ratner on X3, for example).

SHH!: You have to fix the article. you're quoting Leterrier under the interviewer. In your report it looks like Geoff's dream is to make a Marvel movie and Leterrier is listening.

Well, of course Captain America is gonna be a period piece. being as Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor are set in present time, it only makes sense. Plus it keeps the faithfulness to the idea that the Capt. is a WW2 hero.

Posted by: eelyajekim on August 10, 2009 at 02:45:06

dude, its the three Rs
Raiders, Ryan, and Rocketeer. Not only that it is all rolled into one movie. This will be awesome. INstead of shooting a straight forward large team movie, assembling them one by one in each of their own individual movie was definitely the right move.

Posted by: Nowhere Man on August 10, 2009 at 02:47:09

Really enjoyed LL's take on Hulk. Wish it had come out before Lee's, which wasn't bad but just...strange.

Can't wait to see Cap on the big screen, done right. I liked Rocketeer so I have faith Johnston will do a solid job. Happy that it's a period piece. Marvel is doing things the right way for the fans and the masses.

While his idea for avengers cinema month is exciting, it would totally be overkill. No one would see all those movies, not the huge numbers that help films become huge successes. Remember what happened with the matrix 2 and 3 being released just 3 months after each other?

And the dvd for that would be immense, but potentially a 6 hour long film? Love the idea, but it wont be for the casual film goer.

And the expenses of the actors, directors and crews time to film 6 hours+ of film, with potential actors upset at inconsistent direction from each directors.

I am all for the directors sitting down together and directing sections of a 2 and a half, 3 hour long film. Once the story has been nailed, let them break it up for them all to be involved in making it. It would be huge.

I am not sure how excited some people would be to see the first quarter of an epic storyline merely weeks before the finale comes out. Cinema aint cheap folks. £30-£40+ just to see one storyline in cinemas?

Captain America -Period Piece -WWII -Shot like Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Saving Private Ryan? This is possibly the BEST post I have seen on SupeHeroHype in a LONG LONG LONG TIME!!!!!!!

Posted by: jallred on August 10, 2009 at 03:18:28

so stoked...i'm sold...cant wait for next summer

Posted by: Mark D on August 10, 2009 at 03:30:18

Love what I'm hearing there, Captain America being done right should mean the whole of his film is his origin with him being revived in the present day in the Avengers movie.

His whole summer of avengers idea is very ambitious and could be amazing. But to put a slightly more realsitic slant on the idea.
Imagine if they did four short TV movies that are aired at the start of each quarter throughout the year to build interest and remind the public who these characters are without making them pay a small fortune to watch what would essentially be filler movies. Then at Christmas the big event, the massive blockbuster Avengers movie!

Of course that would just make it the most expensive marketing campaign ever, lol.

Posted by: Smackie on August 10, 2009 at 03:30:50

WOOOO!!

I am indeed excited about this.
I hope they keep all of the Avenger movies at PG-13. Softening it up would damper the quality of the film(s) and there is no need to make it a hard 'R'.

I would love a Marvel Universe movie! But first they would kind of have to redo at least X-men 3. Bring on sentinels, Spider-Man, and aliens!

Posted by: CCR on August 10, 2009 at 03:48:00

that's just his DREAM, ppl! never gonna happen (short movies, released one after the other)and rightly so....great movies take time, who wants a rush job, like the saw and twilight movies?? NOBODY! and they already have the release dates set, so chill...let marvel get this sh t right!

Posted by: Rodrigo on August 10, 2009 at 03:52:41

As an English guy I must say...

God Bless (Captain) America LOL.

If it werent for (Captain) America we would have lost the WW2.

Posted by: TheTOBster21 on August 10, 2009 at 04:10:35

the Cap. movie sounds like it's going to be awesome! though i have a feeling they won't have Cap. in his modern suit until either the end of the movie or maybe until the avengers movie. like the first avenger ends with Cap. falling into the ocean and become's frozen, and then betty brant finds him and melts the ice away and then Cap. opens his eyes and gasps and then roll credits. 1 or 2 months later the avengers movie picks up where the first avenger left off.

Posted by: bigwyll on August 10, 2009 at 04:11:38

now that is the kind of thinking that makes me excited for marvels future projects........captain america will be amazing!(grins childish glee)

as the english guy said "god bless captian america"
from a caadian!!!!

Posted by: Abe on August 10, 2009 at 04:27:22

I like the idea of the 4 directors making the four movies, but making them shorter than an hour and a half? No thanks.
I want a nice 2-hour movie for each please. :)

Posted by: krypjonain on August 10, 2009 at 04:33:37

Just hearing "Rocketeer" and "Raiders" gives me infinitely more hope than I ever could have imagined for the CAP movie, and hopefully Avengers will also keep up with it.

Posted by: Haraldo on August 10, 2009 at 05:06:20

I'm not sold on this Cap movie yet. They are going to make it PG-13. How can you make a PG-13 rated WAR MOVIE? People will get shot but there will be no blood? Not cool.
