The Dark Knight Breaks the $1 Billion Mark
Source:Variety
February 21, 2009

The Dark Knight has become the fourth film to take in more than $1 billion in worldwide box office.

Warner Bros. Pictures made the announcement Friday afternoon, saying that the combined domestic and international gross had totaled $1,001,082,160 to date -- about $533 million domestically and $567 million overseas.

The Dark Knight had been about $4 million short of the 10-figure mark when Warner Bros. re-released it into IMAX screens on Jan. 23, the day after its eight Oscar nominations were announced. Grosses from Ecuador also helped nudge the film over the mark, a spokeswoman said.

Only Titanic ($1.842 billion), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.119 billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.066 billion) have topped the billion-dollar worldwide mark previously.

"Knight" also is the second-highest domestic grosser of all time, trailing only Titanic.

it's the ONLY film DC has over Marvel. other than that it's Marvel all day. and don't be suprised if the Avengers does better than TDK.

Maybe the Dark Knight can eventually pay for the bail out.

Awesome. How many records has it broken now? Pretty much all of them...

Thank You Nolan and cast for this grand piece of Art.

i heard that the next villian will be the riddler and he will be played by johnny depp ...
what do you think . . . .

Posted by: Rey on February 21, 2009 at 02:08:31

Yeah Riddler played by johnny depp would be awesome! Hopefully they'll continue with two face as well...

Posted by: Dragon_Slayer on February 21, 2009 at 02:08:51

Oh yea! it only took it two times as a release to make it to the 1 billion mark.

Posted by: rightwinger on February 21, 2009 at 02:18:05

Does this mean there will be a third film? :P

Hey Hollywood! Pay attention... Did you know that besides hi-tech gear, fighting skills and an obsession with hard-line justice... there is another very critical attribute that Batman has? He is a detective with near preternatural skills. Hint: 'Detective Comics featuring...'

In all seriousness, I hope they go back a bit to the detective roots in the next film. It seems to be something they have neglected in all the films. His amazing detective skills were always my favorite part of the Batman experience in the comics. If they are neglecting this talent due to the lack of writer/directors with any skill at adding mystery to a movie... look for some, please.

I've heard that if the Riddler is in the next film, he'll be more like a "Zodiac Killer" or "Son of Sam" serial killer who leaves clues, forcing the Batman to develop more of his detective skills. That would be a nice turn. I've also heard the name David Tennant (Doctor Who) as a possible candidate for Eddie Nygma's role...
Oh, and about 1/3 of that billion dollars seems to be mine, if you factor in the popcorn and Diet Cokes...!!!

If they use the Riddler in the next one I'd like to see his transformation into the Riddler, and I don't want him to be chaotic like the Joker at all... I don't want him to be like Jigsaw from the Saw movies either, I'd want him to be someone who traps or tricks people into hurting or killing themselves or the people they care about... I'd want to see him portrayed as someone who really believes he isn't killing people or committing crimes necessarily, but someone who is above all that... I think there are so many great opportunities in the Riddler. I know Nolan and Co. will make something great if they take up Batman again.

@ Knight Rat

If what you say turns out to be true, in reference to the Riddler and them portraying Batman performing detective skills... I'd be very happy.

Although, I'm not all too happy if they continue regurgitating the villians from the earlier films. What are some of the other Batman villains that would be a good fit for a more mystery-heavy plot line?

Posted by: Keith on February 21, 2009 at 02:43:51

Been imagining the Riddler character as someone who gains celebrity status in Gotham, genuinely a nice guy, who is tragically corrupted by it all and as he winds further down into the Riddler persona, I imagine him being interviewed on some kind of high profile talk show or news show, saying:

"I don't think you're asking the right questions..."

Goosebumps...

@rightwinger

I suppose all that stuff about ****yzing the fingerprints and cross referencing names before the parade shooting, and the assassination attempts against Reese were just his interpretive dance skills?

Posted by: kingpun on February 21, 2009 at 02:46:31

wow I guess I should have said "examining" fingerprints. Stupid SHH.

I just have to tell you how incredibly ANNOYING that "First" thing is. It's kinda like those incredibly huge dorks that not only wait for hours to see a new Star Wars movie, but also freakin dress up as Yoda to go see it. Please, nobody wants to know that you are a nerdy virgin who just sits around refreshing a page hoping to be able to write First as a comment. At least let us think that maybe sometime some woman has been interested in getting in your pants, not getting you comic books. We'll let this one go. We all promise not to tell your infleable doll she was your first. Extremely annoying trying to read smart comments when you have someone right First. Just right "virgin" instead.
The Dark Knight was fantastic. Never has a superhero movie been so captivating.

lmao

i think batman has helped the economy more than Bush

Posted by: rightwinger on February 21, 2009 at 02:51:47

@ kingpun

Everyone's so caustic these days.

To you point, it's valid. I suppose what I meant and did not relay very well via text was that I hope they emphasize his detective skills as a major part of the plot line, ie. more scenes with him doing detective work (in the bat-suit) in the allies, streets, sewers, warehouses, etc. I think you can get the idea at this point.

/cheers
