Pat Hingle, a veteran actor whose career included a recurring role as Commissioner James Gordon in Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, has died after battling blood cancer. He was 84.

Family friend Michele Seidman says Hingle died at his home in Carolina Beach shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday.

Family spokeswoman Lynn Heritage says Hingle was diagnosed with myelodysplasia in November 2006.

His career in movies and television spanned six decades, and he was also nominated for a Tony Award in 1958. Hingle's last movie was Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which was released in 2006.

He could have been a great commissioner if they didnt screw up the series. Under using a main character in the Batman mythology

His portrayal of J Edgar Hoover was the best done in any movie so far

Posted by: mojojackson on January 4, 2009 at 23:51:16

He was always under-used in the Burton/Schumacher flicks.

I don't remember seeing him in much else other than the Batman movies, but his performances in those will always be in my memory. I do remember him being in Maximum Overdrive and a Clint Eastwood movie. He'll be missed greatly.

He was a great actor, I remember watching the original 4 BAT-movies over the last month... and he was fantastic, though criminally under-used in the franchise. Truly a gifted actor. He will be missed.

My God, is this year shaping up to be a tragic year for celebrities as well?

RIP

Another talent gone! Pat Hingle will always be remembered playing the role of Commissioner James Gordon in the first four Batman films, & it's sad to hear of his passing last night. Our thoughts & prayers should go out to his family, friends, & loved ones who are grieving his loss, & we will never forget how great of an actor he was in his own right.

Thank you, Pat! You will be missed, but not forgotten.

I can see it now: Heath Ledger is sitting up in heaven and up walks Pat Hingle. Heath says "Helloooo, Commmishionerrrr..."!

Awesome actor. Check out 'Hang em High' with him and Clint Eastwood.

A great loss to the profession.

Why doesn't the article mention that Hingle did a cameo on The Dark Knight? You can see him in uniform in the parade.
God Bless him.

When i saw the headline i thought it meant Oldman wouldn't be returning in the next Batman movie...turns out it was still crappy new anyway. RIP Pat

I`m truly sorry to hear that Pat Hingle aka Commissioner James Gordon has passed away.Up until Gary Oldman`s interpretation of Gordon in the Nolan Batman films,Pat Hingle was the best Commissioner Gordon.Tim Burton didn`t place enough emphasis on character and the history of how Batman came to be like Christopher Nolan did.In the Burton world of Batman,Batman just appeared fully formed in the 1989 movie like how Athena sprung out of Zeus`s head fully formed in Greek mythology.Commissioner Gordon always was and always will be a supporting character in the Batman world, but like Alfred,Gordon plays a integral role in both the life and the crusade of the Caped Crusader.Batman00 was right,Hingle`s Commissioner Gordon was underused in all four Batman films as a supporting character.

Christopher Nolan understood how important Gordan is as a supporting character but I don`t know if Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher ever really understood how important Gordon is in Batman`s quest to take back the night and so sadly,as a result Hingle`s Gordon wasn`t properly utilized the same way Gary Oldman`s interpretation of Commissioner Gordon was.But Hingle did what he could with what Burton and Schumacher gave him for the role.Pat Hingle was a talented veteran actor who lived a full life and he will undoubtedly be missed.
RIP PAT HINGLE
