IMAX Corporation release the following statement on the success of Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight in IMAX theaters:

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience has crossed the $55 million mark in worldwide gross box office receipts after its seventh week of release. As of Friday, the film reached a total of $43.2 million from 101 IMAX screens domestically and $12 million from 41 IMAX screens internationally.

"The exceptional box office performance of The Dark Night in IMAX® theatres is contributing to the film's very strong legs and fantastic summer theatrical run," said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. "Many repeat customers are experiencing the film in IMAX theatres."

"Chris Nolan's innovative vision is taking IMAX's format to new heights, and his film's impact on ticket sales is unprecedented," said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "The ability to cross this milestone so quickly shows us that more people are visiting IMAX theatres than ever before, underscoring the real potential and appetite for The IMAX Experience®."

"There's no stopping The Dark Knight," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Thanks to a strong marketing campaign and release strategy from Warner Bros. Pictures, as well as an exceptionally well-made movie from Chris Nolan, IMAX theatres have been selling out shows all summer long. We're grateful to our partners, for incorporating IMAX into the design of this extraordinary film."

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX cameras, which marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats.

"Look at you go!"

re-release means it may have a shot to crack 600 million domestically sometime in the future.

Hitpehoaos, please say "crack" again. thank you.

THEY SHOULD RE-RELEASE "THE DARK KNIGHT" WHEN OSCAR SEASON ARRIVES (WHICH WILL BE IN DECEMBER 2008/JANURARY 2009)!

YEAH!

ALSO, THE THING THAT I LIKE MOST ABOUT "THE DARK KNIGHT" WAS WHEN ALFRED (BRUCE'S SLAVE) BROUGHT HIM A TRAY FULL OF FOOD. I LIKE IT WHEN PEOPLE BRING FOOD! AND IMAGINE, PRINCE MICHAEL CAINE GETS PAID $5 MILLION JUST TO CARRY TRAYS OF FOOD! LAUGHING OUT EXTREMELY LOUDLY!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?!

Posted by: Mr. John Nobodysaidfirstsoillsayfirstfirst! on September 5, 2008 at 02:22:36

And how is this a "record"? Records are semi-shiny, circular, about one foot in diamater phongraphs that play music? This is not a record. This is a statement.

Anyone agree with me?

Tha being said, to all those who thought this movie would not make more than "Batman Begins" or would stop at $400 million worldwide... IN YOUR FACE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Great! TDK break another record. This movie seems bigger and bigger...

Posted by: matt on September 5, 2008 at 03:11:31

just like joker told us, there's alot of potential for aggresive expansion!

Posted by: StarBlazer101 on September 5, 2008 at 03:11:58

I say, keep it in theaters for as long as they can. I mean, the DVD is bound to make loads of cash no matter what time of year it comes out. Right????
We can wait a little longer for the DVD release. We must be patient, it's the only way it'll sink the boat. Is that not what we want????
