The Dark Knight Passes Star Wars!
August 18, 2008
After four weeks as the #1 movie in the country, the reign of Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight finally came to an end, but not before it amassed enough money to pass the unadjusted gross of George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi classic Star Wars to become the second-highest grossing movie domestically with an astounding five-week box office gross of $471.5 million! (Star Wars' unadjusted gross of $461 million included a number of re-releases since its debut thirty years ago.) While it has a long way to go if it wants to pass the long-held box office record of James Cameron's Titanic, it's more than likely The Dark Knight could become the second movie to ever make more than $500 million domestically. (Quite ironically, the continued success of Nolan's Batman film knocked George Lucas' new animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the first movie in the franchise to be distributed by Warner Bros., down to third place for the weekend as well.)
Internationally, The Dark Knight topped the box office with $42.4 million from 7,700 theaters in 60 markets. The movie has reached $328.6 million overseas for a combined worldwide total of $800.1 million, climbing to the 19th spot on the all-time worldwide blockbuster chart.

good, bad or stupid I gave a honest opinion you can't bash that.
and space monkey I do know how to reason
The character has one major difference from Batman: a robotic suit that can fly. Other than that they're both ordinary guys trying to fight crime, and BOTH are superheroes...
in reasoning I see your point both are ordinary guys trying to do their best to keep the peace in their city and to the citizen's of that town or city they are superhero's I understand all that.
but it don't change my "personal" feeling on batman he'll always be a lame A$$ character to me,
simple as that.
nothing personal to any of you guys Im sure you guys can respect a mans opinion.

How can true movie fans take gross sales over ticket sales as a statical ****ysis?
Adjusted for inflation, Gone with the Wind is still #1.
Posted by: Handsome John on August 19, 2008 at 12:58:53
who cares about inflation and # of tickets sold. TDK is #2 and that's the bottom line!!
And I thought my jokes were bad...

well star wars was great back in the 70's 80's and 90' and for what it sold back then was pretty impressive but you have to realize why this movie is doing so good.
1. Its batman come on
2. Bruce Nolan is an excellent director
3. Heath Ledger as The Joker
4. Heath Ledgers death
5. We havent seen the joker on the big screen since 1989 almost 20 years ago.
those are the reasons why and evidently star wars didnt have that yes but they had something different for their fans.
but wanna know something funny
most of the star wars fans help dark knight surpass to become the #2 movie

Why is everyone dissing the Clone Wars movie? it really shouldn't be considered. I mean it's just a cartoon! What we really should be talking about is the simple fact that TDK is waaay better than that lame ass Titanic. I saw it ONE TIME! that's all I needed. and of course I was with a hot red head. but I digress. What surprised me was that Braveheart didn't kick Titanic's butt in ticket sales and that was about the same length of time and much better.
I hope that TDK DOES defeat Titanic. I can't beleive how many girls saw that friggin movie like 4-5 times. sheesh! I guess that means there's a lot of females in this country! LOL
anyhoo, that's my take on it. I never knew that Gone With The Wind sold soo many tickets! that's amazing!

if it was'nt for ledger TDK would not have been so popular and tix sales would not been so high at the minimum it would of gross 250 million at the most.

I would have to diasgree with you Dinky, Knight would still have been the top grossing movie of the year without the death of Ledger. I'm not saying that Heath's death didn't sell a few tickets to a curious audience. But it was the large majority of positive reviews and feeedback that made the film sucessful. There is no way it'll beat or any movie that would beat Titanic or even come close to beating the adjusted for inflation Gone with the Wind and who cares? As long as the movies are good I'll be happy

Bruce Nolan is an excellent director? I thought Bruce Nolan got the powers of God for 7 days, played by Jim Carey. Hmmm. I guess Jim Carey, as Bruce Nolan, directed The Dark Knight. Wow. But I guess not even God can sink the Titanic. :)

who the hell is Bruce Nolan? Christopher Nolan directed Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Is Bruce his son or something?
Posted by: Handsome John on August 19, 2008 at 16:48:14
Bruce Nolan was played by Jim Carey in Bruce Almighty.

Hotrider- nice little comparison, just dont forget IronMan never lead the Avengers except on some missions while Batman was the only human to lead the Justice League! And Batman did have a flying robotic suit in Kingdom Come.

Ach, is that Handsome John I see? Wow.
Well, way to go, Dark Knight!

...and what happened to the other stacks of comments?
I know we got kind of off-topic, but... that's a lot of pages to go missing.

@all the not too familiar with this case, Marvel and Sony went through this in the past with Spiderman and Marvel made a big mistake by agreeing on terms with sony who now holds all rights to Spidey. Marvel has their own studio and wanted spidey back but sony said....sorry! look at the contracts.
No way am I gonna boycott the Fox Wolverine movie....sorry I can't wait for that movie people. Warner Bros had to know that the Watchmen were under contract at Fox....These guy's have lawyers they pay alot of money too people....here's what happened if your not familiar with this story.
At the heart of Fox’s suit, filed in February, is the contention that it never ceded rights to the property. And according to the federal Judge Gary Allen Feess, Fox retained distribution rights to the graphic novel penned by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons through a 1991 claim. Furthermore, Feess appears to agree that under a 1994 turnaround deal with producer Larry Gordon, Gordon acquired an option to acquire Fox’s remaining interest in "Watchmen," which was never exercised, thereby leaving Fox with its rights under the 1994 agreement.
Ruling is potentially a huge victory for Fox, which could wind up as a profit participant in the film, and could cost Warners millions considering the film’s box office prospects. However, Fox’s legal team says it isn’t looking for monetary compensation and instead wants to prevent the big-budget film from being released altogether.
DC Disaster Comics with the exception of Batman.

People will make every excuse to hate on this movie. Face it, I love all comic books and most CB adapted movies. This movie is hands down THE best film adapted from a comic book EVER. Period. I would love to say that Watchman may take it on, but now, thanks to greedy suits at FOX the world may never know.

Way to go Batman. You have bested Superman in the pages of comic books, and now have successfully taken on the Rebel Alliance.
Liu,
SHH banned me and all the regulars. I am able to access from home. That's why all the pages are missing.
Go Batman

Wow, on another site, FireFly's Enigma filled me in on what happened with all of the pages.
I thought of going to see the new Star Wars cartoon, but (as huge of a Star Wars fan that I am) I'll probably wait until the dollar movie run. I've heard from others that it wasn't worth the first run ticket price. I'll probably see it on curiousity's sake.
As for The Dark Knight, I saw it again on Saturday. Still fun!
I'm off for today.

I'm a big Batman fan and have always been, but TDK is just way to overated. It was a damn good movie movie but not good enough for all the hype that its gettin.I've seen it once and that is all I care about seeing it till DVD.That's just my opinion.
Posted by: Luke on August 19, 2008 at 21:19:25
I liked Dark Knight (8/10) but it did have a few elements that I didn't like:
- Sonar
- Bale's wrestler voice
- Scarecrow's capture (far too easy)
- Ending with Two Face (If that's the end of him, that is a really lame way to wrap him up)
Posted by: Duga on August 19, 2008 at 21:39:44
Agreed, knabe316. TDK is WAY overated. "Batman Begins" was better: more intelligent, better dialogues, and everything made sense. I mean, the villains had a purpose. The "some men just want to see the world burn" excuse may sound very dramatic, but it's realy empty if you think about it. Doesn't allow you to connect to the character: you're just watching him doing evil stuff.

The BATMAN kill the others summers and blockbusters movies, is a fact.
Don´t cry like a baby marvel fans.
And watch the year 2009: WATCHMEN.

Anarchy is a poor plot device to see someone act evil? It's the perfect foil to Batman starting to get Gotham back on track. It's kind of a huge advantage when the villain believes in the collapse of society AND isn't afraid of being extreme to prove his point. That's like saying greed is a poor excuse to have someone rob a bank. To someone who hasn't seen the movie, I can see how The Joker lacking a traditional plan seems like a way to give him a superficial edge. On the outside it seems like a poor reason to have The Joker be random, murderous, blindly villainous. But if you've actually seen it then you know the context and the themes and you've seen the several scenes that lay out his "plan". The Joker's motivation in TDK wasn't to hold the city to ransom (as The Scarecrow hoped in BB) nor to eradicate crime (Ra's). It challenges Batman's methods and how far he's willing to push himself to stop him.
Sorry I hate to sound like I'm kissing the movie's ass so much, it just looks like you missed a big chunk of what made this interpretation of The Joker so unique from other villains. And you don't even have to evoke Ledger's death to point that out.
As a side note, I seriously doubt most of America is gunning for The Dark Knight to topple Titanic. If you think about how most average (meaning those who don't visit film sites everyday) people are probably just really in love with the film and are willing to see it more than twice...that's just really endearing to see in a comic book film. And it's so exciting to see a Batman movie beat the crap out of Star Wars.
Posted by: Steven The Comic Book Artist! on August 20, 2008 at 14:41:30
I liked both films. Both for various reasons. I'm just hoping that they don't start seeing $$$ and keep the next one's quality.
Then, sooner or later, Nolan's going to bolt and it will be in other hands. Again, hoping for quality.
;)
