The Dark Knight IMAX Box Office Update

July 28, 2008
We received the following official announcement regarding The Dark Knight's performance so far in IMAX theaters:
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience continued its unprecedented box office performance with the highest grossing second weekend in IMAX history. The IMAX release grossed $4.6 million on 94 domestic IMAX screens, from Friday July 25 through Sunday July 27, bringing the film's domestic total to $16.3 million.
Internationally, the film grossed approximately $1.6 million in 28 IMAX® theatres, for a per screen average of $57,800, bringing the international total to $2.8 million. Through Sunday, the worldwide IMAX total was $19.2 million and is expected to cross the $20 million milestone today.
"The Dark Knight is continuing to create new Batman fans nationwide with many repeat customers experiencing it in IMAX theatres," said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. "The box office performance of the film in IMAX's format demonstrates how The IMAX Experience® transforms an already exciting movie into an event that lasts beyond the first weekend."
The IMAX release of The Dark Knight continued its opening box office record streak overseas. Highlights from this past weekend include London's BFI IMAX theatre, which hosted the film's European premiere, and posted a record international IMAX opening of $221K for the weekend. The film also broke opening weekend records for an IMAX title in Holland, South Africa, Turkey and the UAE.
"With nearly $58,000 per screen average for the weekend, moviegoers are clearly drawn to IMAX theatres," said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. "Results in the holdover markets dropped a mere 13%, which demonstrates the resilience this film has in the IMAX format."
"Many IMAX theatres have been operating at nearly full capacity throughout the week and into the second weekend, and the additional IMAX locations that opened internationally over the weekend have reported many individual box office records," said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "We're starting to see the film's strong legs in IMAX theatres, with a second record-breaking weekend and strong advance sales into this week."
"The second weekend results are incredible," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "We are grateful to (Director) Chris Nolan for incorporating IMAX into the design of his film and to Warner Bros. Pictures for utilizing the IMAX network as a key part of the film's marketing and distribution blueprint, a combination that clearly resonates with moviegoers worldwide."
The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX cameras, which marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats.
Sequences shot in traditional 35mm have been digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR® technology. The two formats are seamlessly integrated and morph between IMAX and IMAX DMR. In other words, scenes shot in 35mm appear in IMAX DMR (letterbox), while scenes shot with IMAX's cameras on 15/70mm film expand vertically to fill the entire IMAX screen, which can be up to eight stories tall, for an all-encompassing IMAX Experience.
With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.
Christian Bale reprises his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman; Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger ("Brokeback Mountain") stars as arch-villain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays District Attorney Harvey Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast in the role of Rachel Dawes. Returning from "Batman Begins" are Gary Oldman as Lieutenant Jim Gordon; Oscar winner Michael Caine ("The Cider House Rules") as Alfred; and Oscar winner Morgan Freeman ("Million Dollar Baby") as Lucius Fox.

Mr.Enigma....?
Don't tread on my name...just kidding.
I want to see Selina Kyle, Dent and Scarecrow in the 3rd!

The numbers just keep rising and rising. By the end of the year this movie might just end up making $500,000, halfway from beating Titanic. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it made that much by the end of August!
This movie is truly an unstoppable force!

The movie is doing great, i just hope now they dont get wet about the film, and rush into a 3rd part, and mess it up like, X-men 3, Spider-man 3, and all those movies that had a great sequal, i dont wanna wait till 2010, 2011 for another one, but if thats what it takes to keep this run goin, then so be it, congrants to everybody apart of the film, i wish i could be apart of it, i have so many ideas, and there are so many things im dying to see batman do.

How does kill all firsters crap posts not get deleted?
People say a pointless first and poof... gone. He rants and they stay. SHH... what are you doing?
I doubt Mr. Reese will turn into the riddler at all. The name sounds like a coincidence... I just don't feel like he was set up for that part.
Not to mention Nolan says he doesn't plan for sequels. He's all about the movie at hand, and makes it as a stand alone. That would completely disprove the Mr. Reese/Riddler theory.
this movie was amazing in IMAX, i'm not surprised it's making so much money there. When is the next IMAX release, does anybody know? I wonder what's going to happen if another movie is scheduled to open up there sometime soon.

Nolan does say he is a one film at a time guy, but I really hope he does another one. We still need to see a fully formed and workable Batcave under Wayne manor. Also, The Dark Knight certainly leaves you wanting more and the film itself raised more elements that need to be resloved. The Dark Knight Returns anyone?

WIth the price of Imax tickets, I thought the number would be higher.
TDK is going to be playing in Imax for a long time.

I am so completely satisfied with TDK I don't need a third movie. However, Warner Bros. will want another gigantic hit at the box office so we will probably see Bale and Nolan return to end the trilogy.
Selina Kyle is a must for this movie. after the death of Rachel Batman could use another love interest. The movie series would require a new lead female role and a strong, powerful, physically threatening Catwomen would be a complete 180 from Miss Dawes.
The Riddler and Penguin (as a legitimate owner of the Iceberg Lounge by day and heavy arms smuggler by night) would also be good choices that fit in Nolan universe.

There are two things I hate....the fact that something so good comes to an end. and two, selfishly wanting a final/third film.

We dont have an Imax in Ireland so I've already booked a flight to London just to see it the way God... I mean Nolan intended.
It is the greatest movie ever made, and ironically I've had a smile on my face ever since i saw it.

Hey Kill All Firsters, get your panties out of a knot. You screen name alone proves you've got no life and are hardly a threat.
As for TDK, I've seen it three times, once in IMAX, and will be seeing it again!

Matt Murdock Pimp I just checked and theaters are not all sold out in New York. Why you claim they are is beyond me. I guess you are hoping for Daredevil 2 eh?.

In a review in a UK newspaper, The Dark Knight onky got a two star review...and I hear alot of people complaining about some ridiculous cringeworthy moments. I havent seen it yet, but I will...although batman begins is completely overrated.

john malkovich as the riddler

@ Super Hero Hype
I could understand some international audiences cringing at this movie. TDK pushed the PG-13 rating as far as it could. The Joker "dissapearing pencil trick" the mouth-slitting, and overall visceral punch of some of the scenes were pretty rough.
The level of violence in this film(while welcomed by some viewers) was the only negative thing about this movie.
And Batman Begins was not overrated.

I knew TDK would do well.
First time I have posted on here, but i always read the comments and wanted to add my ideas for the 3rd Batman. See if anyone agreed-
First of all I think it should be called "Shadow Of The Bat" it can focus of Bruce's struggle to reliquish himself from the mantle of being Batman and his eventual acceptance that he is more Batman than Bruce Wayne as the main theme.
I would include a small part for the Penguin as mentioned by someone earlier, as a weapons dealer who launders money through his nightclub. Probably useable as a sub-plot to show Batmans detective skills. I would use Bob Hoskins (no change of cockney accent either!) and keep him rooted in reality, so as far removed from Devito as possible. The Penguin represents one of the last mobsters left in Gotham after the events of TDK and the dismantling through fear that the Batman now has no limits including killing (Although this refers to the murders by Harvey Dent)
Im afraid i would hate to see Catwoman, thanks largly to Halle Berry who has left a bad taste in my mouth and lost faith in the character for a good long while.
(To cover the love interest angle add an FBI agent who is tracking Batman, make her hot and talented....job done)
Two-Face should be the one to return, Get him out of the secure wing at Arkham somehow (Perhaps Scarecrow)this also would allow for a breif cameo (under a veil of darkness or neat editing, including straightjacket) for the Joker to say something cool. Perhaps like "i believe in Harvey Dent, I believe in Two-Face more [laughs]"
This would set up the revenge run for Dent, who has lost his mind and is now completley Two-Face, some cool scenes could show an internal conflict however.
Although as a thought, add the Riddler in, but make him somewhat similar to the Jigsaw killer (like in the saw movies) where people have to work out the riddles or die. make him an extreme nut-case.
Its sets itself up really. Although im open to any ideas. although this direction is what i would maybe choose. as you could not have Man-Bat, Bane or Clayface as they are too far fetched.
Let me know what you think.
Go Dark Knight go!

I would like to see Nolan's take on bringing Selina Kyle into this type of batman world.
