The Dark Knight Reaches a Record $314.2M in 10 Days!

Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight earned an estimated $75.6 million from 4,366 theaters in its second weekend, surpassing Shrek 2's $72.2 million for biggest second weekend ever.

Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up has reached $314.2 million in just 10 days, another record. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest held the previous record in the amount of days it took to cross the $300 million mark - it needed 16 days to do so. On Monday, The Dark Knight will surpass Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to become the biggest movie of 2008 domestically.

The film is already up to #23 on the all-time domestic blockbuster list and has a good shot at surpassing Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope's $460.998 million (not counting inflation) to become the second-biggest domestic earner of all-time, trailing only Titanic's $600.788 million.

The Dark Knight, budgeted at $185 million, stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures' Hancock took in $8.2 million in its fourth weekend in sixth place, sending the $150 million Will Smith superhero film over the $200 million mark with $206.4 million.

Universal's Hellboy II: The Golden Army dropped down to eighth place. It made $4.9 million in its third weekend for a total of $65.9 million.

Posted by: Pimp on July 27, 2008 at 12:59:39

Was there any question?

Posted by: Korn on July 27, 2008 at 13:00:06

Seen it 2 times probably will see it 2 more times. The Dark Knight deserves everything It gets and I hope it blows Titanic out of the water that movie does not deserve to be the # 1 movie of all time.

I am glad I did my part 4 times I have seen it. Screw titanic and anyone who supports that movie is a homo. Worst movie ever.

Dark Knight best ever!

Nice! I saw it twice, I'm still waiting to see it at the IMAX as well.

This is so awesome but also sad because it makes you wonder if there will ever be another movie as great as this....

Posted by: Gopic on July 27, 2008 at 13:03:50

Marvel fan boys will never ever have stats likes this after Iron Man

Posted by: KMaguire on July 27, 2008 at 13:03:53

How great would it be if this thing kept going straight to the top? How great would it be to have the number one highest grossing movie of all time (inflation notwithstanding) be a Batman movie?!

Rumors have it that they have lock Johnny depp to play The joker on the next installment.

so bad a!! this movie deserves everything that it gets congrats going for my third time today, long live the joker

No surprise at all, the hype machine was running on full cylinders, plus the passing away of one of the stars added a nitrous boost to the rollercoaster. It deserves everything and all the staff who were involved in the project should be awarded by working on the next Batman project as well.

YES, suck it, Marvel...suck it long, suck it hard.

I will go see this again today with a few friends and add a few more bucks in the coffer.

Someone said it took 142 days for Batman Begins to do what the Dark Knight has done in like 5 days or something. Can someone confirm this?

Posted by: Red on July 27, 2008 at 13:14:15

Great news. The Dark Knight deserves it.

COME ON PEOPLE! We all need to pitch in and get DK bigger than Titanic!

Posted by: sccitylhh on July 27, 2008 at 13:15:42

Just saw it for the third time in IMAX. BTW, if you haven't seen it in IMAX, then you haven't seen it :)

PS I might have just seen this because i was looking for something, but i thought i was able to make out a question mark next to Anthony Michael Hall's head on the right when he was reading the Joker's message. Any takers?

Posted by: Snorkllz on July 27, 2008 at 13:18:48

@boba Fett

I'm not sure if that fact is true or not but regardless of BB box office totals, It was the best superhero movie ever made, until July 18 2008 ....

BB was great in so many ways, plus it paved the way for the TDK.

I'd expect weekend drops in the low 40's percent range from now on. This movie will finish #2 on the domestic list. Question is whether or not it will clear $500 million in North America.

Posted by: Spider-ham on July 27, 2008 at 13:20:02

YOU ARE ALL SHEEP! YOU HEAR ME? SHEEP!

This Joker makes me wanna vomit! Maybe one day 100 years from now, someone will make a movie that does the Joker proper justice, because this isn't it! Heath Ledger should get an oscar? Puh-leeze!

Posted by: TPJR on July 27, 2008 at 13:20:14

Yeah, seen it 3 times... Let's set that record, everyone go again.

Posted by: acslaterson on July 27, 2008 at 13:20:26

Awesome, hopefully I can get into an IMAX theater to see it for the third time this week. Favorite movie ever!

I have seen people talk about Depp on the message boards and that is about it. Are their any articles out there about him being cast as Joker? Thanks in advance if you post a link!

This is sweet and all but why does Marvel immediately get brought up? I just started re-reading comics over the past two months and Secret Invasion is a really cool read. Batman R.I.P. just has me confused, it is a new story arc but I have no idea what is going on. Just seems that Marvel is a little more friendly at this point for people to just pick up and start reading. For the rest of DC nothing look very interesting. Give a shout on any DC books I could easily catch up with!

Titanic? I could definitely see it going down now!

Posted by: Enrique on July 27, 2008 at 13:20:59

SWEET!!!!!

Posted by: HUH?! on July 27, 2008 at 13:21:06

Iron Man would kick Batman's @$$! But the Dark Knight was STILL off the chain! Seen it twice, still gotta see it in IMAX

Posted by: wolverinegangsta on July 27, 2008 at 13:22:42

DC fanboys bask in the glory of your ONE and ONLY franchise! Marvel has been destroying DC this entire decade and will continue the beating in the coming years. Batman is all DC has.

Posted by: Jason on July 27, 2008 at 13:27:32

I like movies from both marvel and DC. It's too bad that the Spiderman and X-Men franchises are now officially in the toilet. Ironman seems like its destined to take over for Spiderman. Same can be said for the Avengers and X-Men.

Early shots of Watchmen look like it could be DC's second big franchise behind Batman. And if Bryan Singer does indeed up the action significantly in Superman The Man of Steel, that will be another strong franchise.

Good times for comic book movies.
