Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight has earned $155.34 million to top Spider-Man 3 for best opening weekend at the box office. The weekend estimates show Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up more than $4 million ahead of the $151.1 million first weekend for Spider-Man 3 in May of 2007. The Dark Knight has also broken Spider-Man 3's record ($4.7 million) for best debut in IMAX theaters with $6.2 million in 94 locations.

Budgeted at $180 million, the film opened in a record 4,366 theaters nationwide and broke the new single and opening day records on Friday with $67.85 million. Spider-Man 3 previously held those records with $59.8 million.

Internationally, The Dark Knight added $40 million in 20 countries where it began opening Wednesday.

The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

It's beating spiderman's records because its a much more interesting film then any of the spiderman films were...I can't even watch any other superhero movies and enjoy them now after seeing Dark Knight....except maybe Batman Begins and Incredible Hulk..

Wow. This is incredible, but they definitely earned it. I have one question though - do weekend sales only count Friday and Saturday?

Posted by: Dark Knight on July 20, 2008 at 12:49:43

and no don, Johnny Depp would be a good replacement for The Joker.
the PERFECT Riddler is David Hyde Pierce, hes just kinda old now

I am not sure, but last time I came on here and posted, people were confused as to two-face's fate, thinking that he died. I did a bit of research and found out through an interview with Eckhart himself that he is signed on for at least one more Batman Film. Some could argue that this could just be flashback's with Batman being tormented by what happened to Dent and feeling guilty about it, HOWEVER, I believe this is great proof that two-face will be in another and there will be another

Especially stupid when you're not even first.

Make it right and they will come.

Thank God, I'm so glad it took out spidey 3 that was the worst movie spider-man it killed it for me I can't watch the first two. Dark Knight was Awesome going again tonight for my third time. I would say that Marvel got there hands full.

Not Bad, Hardly the 170-200 mil that a huge portion of folks on here were predicting...

i love this news bring on number 3

Posted by: batfan21 on July 20, 2008 at 12:55:23

this film deserves everything it gets. and i just wanna say to anyone who says they cant use the joker again and blah blah blah. well everyone said heath was going to suck and couldnt be better than jack, now everyone agrees he was the best joker. but someone could easily duplicate his performance that would be easy because he has already developed the character and these are the best actors in the world who could easily copy everything he does. i mean most of us here love batman and wouldnt you rather see a third film with the joker in it? it would be so much better if the joker was in it and i think as fans we could accept what happened to heath and be able to move on and accept that they replace the joker with another actor just for the sake of the story. i would like to see him recast and if he isnt then that is fine too because i believe in chris nolan.

WAIT A D@MN MINUTE, WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!! BUT IN ALL REALITY THE BEST PERSON TO PLAY THE RIDDLER WOULD HAVE TO BE DAVID TENNANT BY FAR. HE IS IN TALKS WITH NOLAN, OH AND WHO SAID FACE IS ACTUALLY DEAD WHAT IF THEY ARE COVERING UP HIS MOVE TO ARKHAM!

Posted by: Swagg92982 on July 20, 2008 at 13:00:41

You know this movie is the truth when my girl makes me go see it again two days in a row. By far the best Batman movie I've ever seen.

Posted by: god on July 20, 2008 at 13:00:53

two-face isnt dead u *******s... watch the movie while hes on the ground hes still breathing, overtly, not because that its a mess up in acting or something like that

Posted by: Simon on July 20, 2008 at 13:00:56

YES!
FINALLY!
How awful was Spidey 3? FINALLY a great movie can hold the top spot!
I've gone twice. Probably going again today.

Anyway, Han Zimmer and Newtown Howard did an amazing job with the soundtrack like Adalbinha said.
