Atlanta Becomes NYC in a New Spider-Man: No Way Home Featurette

Filming in Georgia became something of a hot-button issue this year thanks to its new abortion and voting rights laws. Regardless, the city of Atlanta remains a major locus for film and TV production, and Marvel Studios is one of its most frequent visitors. One of the more intriguing aspects of any movie’s creative process involves watching the filmmakers bring real-world locations to life without even having to shoot there in person. Now, Sony has released a new Spider-Man: No Way Home featurette that shows how the Peach State’s capital was transformed into New York City.

It certainly helps that the MCU’s version of New York has several landmarks that don’t exist in the real world. That includes Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. However, No Way Home still featured several Big Apple touchstones like Times Square and the Queensboro Bridge. And visualizing them on the big screen required a deft touch that combines practical and digital wizardry.

“With some creativity, you can shoot almost anything here in Atlanta,” said co-producer Mitch Bell. “There’s a great crew here, there are facilities here, there’s equipment here, the vendors are fantastic.”

Some of the film’s cast members also heaped praise on the Atlanta crew, with Benedict Cumberbatch asserting that even though the actors often have little more to work with than a massive screen, the set designers help them deliver their best performance. Marvel’s Kevin Feige also chimed in with some thoughts about his studio’s relationship with the ATL:

“To see it grow and evolve each year, it’s great,” said Feige. “And it’s amazing to have a single home where we can have three or four productions going at a time. There’s not a lot of states where you could do that. Where they have the facilities, and they have the equipment, to manage that level of production.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters everywhere.
