David Goyer to Write Green Lantern Corps, John Stewart Confirmed

There finally appears to be some forward momentum on Warner Bros. PicturesGreen Lantern Corps movie, as Deadline reports that DC Films stalwart David Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman) will pen the screenplay alongside Justin Rhodes (Contract Killers).

It has also been confirmed that longtime comic book Lantern character John Stewart will make his feature film debut in the DC Extended Universe. DC Comics’ first African-American superhero, Stewart was created by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams in 1971 and has been long-rumored to be a choice part for Tyrese Gibson of the Fast & Furious franchise, although no formal offer has been made public. The story for Green Lantern Corps has been described as a buddy cop movie with Stewart and Hal Jordan, the latter previously played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 bomb Green Lantern.

DC Films producer Charles Roven told EW last year that Green Lanterns would not become part of the Extended Universe until 2019’s Justice League 2 at the earliest. “For now, we felt that we were introducing enough characters that the best possible place we could put Green Lantern is some introduction in Justice League 2, or barring that, a movie after,” Roven said. We’ll have to see if that remains the case.

Right now among the DC Films slate is Wonder Woman opening on June 2, 2017, Justice League on November 17, 2017, The Flash tentatively in 2018, Aquaman on October 5, 2018 and Shazam on April 5, 2019. Justice League: Part Two and Cyborg no longer have official 2019 release dates anymore, and Green Lantern Corps is tentatively set to open on July 24, 2020.
