The Kaiju are Coming in Marvel’s Monsters Unleashed

Though we’re still in the midst of Marvel‘s Civil War II event series, the publisher is already making plans for the event set to follow it and things are getting bigger, literally.

Writter Cullen Bunn (Deadpool, Godzilla: Cataclysm) will pen Monsters Unleashed, a new event featuring all of the different giant monsters that have plagued the pages of Marvel comics over the decades. The five-issue series will feature a new artist for each issue and includes such heavy hitters as Adam Kubert (All-New, All-Different Avengers, Wolverine), Greg Land (Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men), Salvador Larroca (Invincible Iron Man, Ghost Rider), Steve McNiven (Civil War, Wolverine: Old Man Logan) and Leinil Yu (Avengers, Superior).

“What you have is the arrival of mammoth-sized monsters in the Marvel Universe, creating mayhem all around them,” Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso said. “They arrive everywhere so it’s an all-in event. Avengers, X-Men, Champions, Inhumans, Deadpool, Spider-Man and friends, Power Man and Iron Fist; everyone has to get past whatever gripes they might have currently in the Marvel Universe and team up against this threat that’s global… [It is] an all hands-on deck event for the Marvel heroes and they will find help from a very unlikely source; a cavalry will arrive at some point.”

The teaser art for the series features the giant monster likes of Fin Fang Foom, Devil Dinosaur, and even the original version of Groot. Though now the lovable member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, he was once a giant monster, aka “The monarch of Planet X,” who came to Earth to collect and study humans all the way back in 1960’s Tales to Astonish #13.

The series will begin in January 2017.
