Recent Academy Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel) told French program Radio Classique’s Culture Club (via Film Music Reporter) that he will take on scoring duties for Disney and Lucasfilm’s first “Star Wars” standalone film, titled Rogue One.
This will reteam Desplat with director Gareth Edwards, for whom he composed the music for last year’s blockbuster Godzilla. Set to star Academy Award-nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Rogue One is based on an idea by ILM CCO John Knoll with a screenplay by Chris Weitz, and is set to begin shooting this summer in London to debut in theaters on December 16, 2016.
Knoll will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce.
Besides his regular work with Wes Anderson, the prolific Desplat is also known for such blockbusters as both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as well as three pictures for Weitz as director (The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, A Better Life). In addition to winning for The Grand Budapest Hotel, he also received an Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game.
