The internet has been abuzz all morning in the wake of last night’s announcement that Spider-Man is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although details are still few as to precisely what route this latest reboot of the character will take, The Hollywood Reporter has today dropped a few details that should help fuel speculation.
What we know right now that is that Spidey will make his MCU debut in Walt Disney Pictures’ Captain America: Civil War, set for release on May 6, 2016. He’ll then get his own solo film with a still-untitled Spider-Man movie, set for release on July 28, 2017. Who will be underneath the mask? According to the trade, it’s going to be a “much younger” actor than Andrew Garfield (currently 31).
We’re not sure yet who will take the director’s chair on Spider-Man either, although it is said that, as expected, Marc Webb definitely won’t be back. Previous producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, meanwhile, are being given “Executive Producer” titles on the new film, but won’t have any serious creative input, adds the trade.
The article also notes that Marvel Studios may be putting itself in a position to eventually reacquire the screen rights to Spider-Man altogether. The timeframe for that, however, is likely sometime off.

UPDATE: Variety is reporting that, while plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 have been cancelled, Sony Pictures is still developing other Spider-Man-related films, including Sinister Six, Venom and a female-driven Spider-Man spinoff. Only time will tell whether or not any of these make it to production and, if they do, how they’ll be related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
