Marvel Creates All New Character for Ms. Marvel Comic Series

As a part of their upcoming All-New Marvel NOW! initiative, Marvel is rolling out a slew of new titles and one of them is a relaunch of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. With Danvers having used that title for some time, it’s left the “Ms. Marvel” name without an owner, until now. Come February 2014, Marvel will release an all new Ms. Marvel comic series, with an all-new Ms. Marvel (via The New York Times).

Set to be written by author G. Willow Wilson, the “new” Ms. Marvel is named Kamala Khan and is a teenage Muslim girl of Pakistani descent. After she discovers she has shape-changing abilities, Kamala takes on the Ms. Marvel name having been a close follower and fan of Carol Danver’s superhero career.

“Captain Marvel represents an ideal that Kamala pines for,” Wilson said. “She’s strong, beautiful and doesn’t have any of the baggage of being Pakistani and ‘different.’ ”

But supervillains won’t be the only thing she is combating in the new series, her family will be her biggest adversaries.

“Her brother is extremely conservative,” Marvel editor Sana Amanat said. “Her mom is paranoid that she’s going to touch a boy and get pregnant. Her father wants her to concentrate on her studies and become a doctor.”

The new Ms. Marvel series will debut in February of 2014 but she will first appear in the upcoming “All-New Marvel NOW! Point One Special.” Will you be picking it up?
