Michonne Rides a Horse in New Image from The Walking Dead Season 4

When AMC debuted the Comic-Con banner for “The Walking Dead,” the first things that many fans noticed was Michonne, played by Danai Gurira, riding a horse. This of course caused much confusion as to where the horse came from, and remembrance of the horse that Rick found in the pilot episode of the series. Now we have a new image of Michonne riding “Flame,” as he will be called on the show, but why a horse?

“With gas at a premium, with the fact that vehicles break down, I think we would return to the days of horseback riding and you can graze them as you go in a place like Georgia,” Executive Producer Gale Ann Hurd told Entertainment Weekly. “You don’t have to carry food for them. They feed themselves, so to speak. It goes along with the new approach this season of sustainability. With a horse, you can go through the woods. You can get around obstacles. You can’t do that in a vehicle. If a tree falls and blocks the road, you can’t go through the forest. You’re not going to make it through. It’s actually much more of a useful choice. Not only that, but Michonne looks so badass on it.”

It would appear that the horse will be an integral part of the new season for Michonne and, since he has a name, he’s already ahead of many of the characters that have perished throughout the series. Hopefully we’ll find out where this horse has been hiding out unscathed for the entirety of the zombie apocalypse. Any guesses?

“The Walking Dead” returns on Sunday, October 13 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
