Crow Reboot Casting & Makeup Talk
November 23, 2009
Ryan Kavanaugh, the producer behind the upcoming Brothers, is currently overseeing the development of Stephen Norrington's franchise reboot of The Crow.
He tells io9 that Norrington's script is now in the tweaking stage and that everyone should know it is not a direct remake of the Brandon Lee-starring film. "We're just relaunching it and making it with a much more present day character, someone more relatable to everybody."
The makeup will very much be different from the Crow visage we've come to know (and which has become a year-to-year Halloween costume favorite). Also, as far as casting goes, "It will be an actor you've heard of, yes. We're not ruling anything out. We're looking at both, with the very well known and the 'very talented but they may not be quite there yet.'"
The Crow isn't even a greenlit film yet, but it's sounding like it will be in a matter of months.

heh, people still go as The Crow for halloween? really?

The crow is one of those films that is good enough the first time around....pls dont ruin it with a lame remake

"The Crow" changed my life, its my all time favorite movie. I think they shouldn't even try with another. Besides the 1st one, the rest were horrible and not able to capture the true meaning or essence behind the James O'Barr graphic novel, or the first movie. R.I.P. Brandon Lee

son of a *****

I'm not sure about this yet. I love the story behind the Crow, but I don't want them to taint the original with another lame version. I guess I'll wait and see what happens.

this is crap the movie is good enough it has its own status where it is, they are just out to make money im tired of remakes why not continue the series just in a better direction, the original two f4 movies were ok dont recast and reshoot just make better from where they left off better writers same with the hulk, eric bana hulk did kinda suck, norton hulk good, stay with him and keep going or we are going to have more punisher style problems wich by the by i like the jane one and warzone was good for action!
Posted by: Darkhawk on November 24, 2009 at 00:43:55
Brandon Lee will always be Eric Draven/The Crow
No one could ever change that! The Crow is an AWESOME movie and by far is my fav of all time! if they do go along with this, do NOT make another Crow movie like Salvation and Wicked Prayer, heck even the second movie City of Angels is on the rocks. Plz bring justice to the franchise, but no one will ever replace Brandon Lee R.I.P.

...why?
Posted by: red_wing1 on November 24, 2009 at 01:26:07
once again, hollywood shows that it can't come up with an original idea. it has to remake or reboot the system. for the love of god, come up with something new, please

Personally,I thought the movie version of the Crow was terrible. Nothing like the book except for a few choice lines and a couple scenes that were similar. And while Brandon Lee was good in the movie, he's only in like half of it. Filming wasn't done when he got killed. His stunt double filmed the rest. I'd like a new Crow movie, but only if it's based more on the original book. The book is vicious, gory, disgusting, and violent but manages to be very sad and emotional at the same time. No more Bai Ling talking about eyeballs and **** like that or T-Bird looking like (and sword fighting) like a damn pirate. Anyone remember how T-Bird was killed in the book? My point...

Maybe Rob Zombie will join the project, and the Crow could come from a dysfunctional redneck family where his mother, played my Rob's wife, is a sexy redneck alchoholic....could work....ya think????
P.S. I do like Rob's movies

i can go either way on this one, if they get a good enough story n not remake the first one it could be good, but people gotta get over the whole brandon lee thing yea it was one of the best comic book adaptations done n he was the best of the 4 but that's just cause he was a better actor n the movie was done right but in the books they never reused characters or makeup for that matter, cept they did bring eric draven back for a mini series but that was it, so logically the sequels would of turned out just as they did

First off.... Lee is dead, get over it. Second off, the movie version was meh -- Okay at best--. Sure the story is amazing, and even Brandon Lee was quite good (along with the rest of the cast), but this isn't going to be a remake guys. Reboot is not the same as remake. Reboot, they are going to overhaul it with a new story, characters, and design. Keep in mind that if Norrington is directing and Ryan Kavanaugh is producing it, chance are it is getting something we havent seen since City of Angels... A theatrical release.

STOP
DONT DO THIS

Can't people come up with an original idea? It's not even like the first movie sucked and needs a remake! The first movie was great and true to the graphic novel. James O'Barr was proud of The Crow though I'm sure he despised all the sequels what really can they hope to accomplish by remaking a movie that has such a huge cult following. It would be like remaking Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Ok...loved the first movie and Brandon did an amazing job becoming his character...he embodied Eric Draven and that made his portrayal the best yet. I can honestly say that i dont think of them re-booting this as a threat to the original movie...i always like to see creative views of good ideas, and The Crow was an amazing idea. One thing worries me though...the makeup...if they change the makeup, this really just becomes some other vengence spirit movie to me...

"He tells io9 that Norrington's script is now in the tweaking stage and that everyone should know it is not a direct remake of the Brandon Lee-starring film."
Wonder if that means it'll be slightly different but similar in character... The Pigeon, anyone?
I loved The Crow, if they can do it again and make it more broad in appeal and just as in spirit/entertaining - why not?
Norrington did fine with Blade.
PS Anyone asking about Original ideas, i ask you where do you think the idea for 95% of Superhero comic book-based films? I'll give you a clue - I said it twelve words ago. Let it go occasionally. If it's out of our hands - why be so passionate online?... if you're REALLY that passionate about it - do something worthwhile to your cause like start a petition, I don't know.
I don't think this is a film to worry about anyway - the sequels damn-near destroyed The Crows legacy as it stands. Only blessing is that they're THAT forgettable.
I'm keen on it though.
Posted by: Harish on November 24, 2009 at 03:09:49
Actually, with given thought - I'm not bothered if they make it or if they don't. Just looking at my DVD of it.. the first was a great cult film.
Posted by: mojojackson on November 24, 2009 at 03:15:17
Don't greenlight it. Just don't. Greenlight Norrington Shield-style, just for suggesting it.

I'm and was a MASSIVE Brandon Lee fan from before the Crow, I think this would be like recasting Heath Ledger's Joker (it's the classic: is the actor bigger than the role or the role bigger than the actor dilemma), it could be great as long as they cast someone who came bring the same amount of intensity that he bought.
The sequels were VERY ordinary, the TV show was okay, the IMAGE comics were fair. This could be done but don't REMAKE the first just continue the series but this time with a female lead. There are a wealth of fine Crow stories and lead women in action movies has more of an audience now than ever.
JUST DON"T bring back Eddie Furlong...'
BTW goin to Pearl Jam tomorrow night in AUSTRALIA BRISBANE - Whoo Hoo...not related but I'm just sayin'

Oh....R.I.P. Brandon Lee : (

How is Eric not a present day relatable character?! The movie wasn't made in the damn 30s!!! lol It came out in 1994, that's not that old.
I'm all for seeing another GOOD crow movie. But don't make changes that don't need to be made. Plus League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a terrible film.
Posted by: becoming on November 24, 2009 at 05:46:04
@ Zach
How did the first movie true to the graphic novel? By Eric being in a band (not a dancer), by Sarah being a close friend of Eric and Shelly's (not a random girl he gives the ring to), how they were killed by organized crime in their apartment and NOT by crack heads on the side of the street in the rain when their car breaks down??

"We're just relaunching it and making it with a much more present day character, someone more relatable to everybody."
That right there says: Emo Crow for a PG-13 rating
Posted by: Dr. Jersey Shore on November 24, 2009 at 07:23:14
..the ****?
you can't remake perfection OR relaunch it.
more relatable? present day? what does that mean!? a crow that gushes over miley cyrus and uses facebook when not avenging the murder of his ex-girlfriend who killed herself because she couldn't take the humiliation of her sexting pics being circulated through her highschool?
this is retarded. eat a bag of ****, hollywood.
