New Moon Breaks Dark Knight's Single Day Record
Source:SuperHeroHype
November 21, 2009

After setting a new record for midnight openings with $26.27 million at 3,514 theaters, Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: New Moon has also broken the record for a single day, earning $72.7 million on Friday at 4,024 theaters. The previous single day record of $67.2 million was held by The Dark Knight.

It looks like The Dark Knight's 3-day record of $158 million may be in jeopardy now as well.

Well, there are tons of teenage girls!

Posted by: Imagica on November 21, 2009 at 11:03:18

Damn wow this is not unexpected these books are well loved by their fans.

Posted by: A true joker on November 21, 2009 at 11:04:37

That's too bad. I was so happy a superhero film had the top spot on some records, and clearly the twilight d-bags are not super heroes. They are hardly even vampires!!!

I call shenanigans!

R.I.P. TDK...IM2 will avenge you...hopefully...

Posted by: mundo on November 21, 2009 at 11:14:32

It's sad that a really good in The Dark Knight got beat by a movie where people just jumped on the bandwagon to be with the in crowd. VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE!

Posted by: COLE8.7 on November 21, 2009 at 11:14:54

Or, maybe Avengers will avenge you...that would make more sense...

Seriously? ****ing glowing vampires. And presumably werewolves that turn into dolphins or something. What the **** is wrong with everybody? Twilight is literally worse than Hitler. What does it say about our society when this bull **** movie, based of bull **** books, is toping a cinematic masterpiece? Dark Knight transcended genres. Now we have this garbage film where only girls that were into the stupid book, or think that Edward is hot, rush out to see this dreck. Just because someone is attractive, you don't see their ****ty movies. Throw your hard earned dollars down on something I like to call quality. If you wanna be turned on, watch a ****ing porn. Or, just keep going to see this movie, and Hollywood will keep making crap like this.

RECOUNT.

Well, these Twilight films are INCREDIBLY front-loaded, they don't appeal to much of an audience outside of the people coming to see it opening weekend (many of whom will see it again), so that's about the only record it's going to get. Also, as many articles fail to point out, the total includes the midnight shows and anything else that came after (my theater also had a 2:45 a.m. showing after selling out 6 midnights), so what these "in it's first day" things should say is "in it's first 24 hours", because that's really what they mean. I swear, for all of our midnight shows, there were maybe a dozen males between them. For as much business as we did, our men's room has never been cleaner. On Friday, the boyfriends may have been dragged along, but after the weekend it's probably just going to be people coming to see it for the second or third time and middle-aged women that don't want to deal with the weekend rush. The first Twilight opened huge also, and while this one will do better, there's definitely a ceiling on these movies, they'll top out at a certain point. Don't know what that is yet, but they're not in danger of becoming all-time highest grossers.

Man I hope Iron Man 2 or Spiderman 4 takes back the record. RIP TDK. :(

Posted by: Anjow1060 on November 21, 2009 at 11:28:04

Since Nolan is jerking us around, I throw all my support behind Iron Man 2. I say we set aside Marvel / DC differences and unite against a common goal.

Destroy Twilight.

Isn't this happening one of the four signs of the Apocalypse?

Posted by: COLE8.7 on November 21, 2009 at 11:29:26

I wonder if this could turn into another "Titanic" where teen girls just never let it die...scary thought...

My post was deleted.

Posted by: kri-el on November 21, 2009 at 11:32:20

Why? I did not use profanity. I simply pointed out that the post has no point being on here. Twilight is not comic book related, there for has no place on this site.

Posted by: COLE8.7 on November 21, 2009 at 11:36:10

@ kri-el
It broke superhero movie records, I imagine that's why it's here...

Posted by: The Flash on November 21, 2009 at 11:38:30

Well that is shame, as this is not a sign of the quality as the first film got average reviews, this is pure teenage girls going with their mothers or tracking the boyfriends, how do I know as I was a dragged boyfriend and must say, no plot, effects although good look 5 years behind the times and is again just average.

Posted by: what0080 on November 21, 2009 at 11:39:35

If I were to sum this movie in one word, it wouldn't be sufficient. If I had two words, it would be "Dull Surprise." Anyone who's seen this would know what I'm talking about... This is what passes for movies nowadays? Hopefully, by 2010 we'll be joining the chorus of "Hail the Conquering Iron Man" or rejoicing at the triumphant return of Tron. Here's to hope...

Whatever happened to the Dark Knight?

Posted by: BigMurph on November 21, 2009 at 11:52:03

yeah..why the hell is Twilight even being discussed here..the only thing comic about it is that it is comically pathetic. don't tell me the 'Hype's buyin into this sh** now too? anything for an ad banner perhaps?

Posted by: Movie Man on November 21, 2009 at 11:53:31

Katie Holmes! You were the missing link to add more money to "The Dark Knight". **** you, Chris Nolan, for letting her out of your sites.

Oh, yeah, and congrats "New Moon". You did what Batman SHOULD'VE done, but the director of THAT movie was too chcicken to cast Holmes and gave the part to a B-rated untalented actress.

Posted by: Wolverine_X on November 21, 2009 at 11:54:04

This is happening only because of the teenagers girls. it's all about the teenagers girls who love vampires bitting their necks. And so they all go running to see this flik with their boyfriend whishing at the same time he was a vampire. Look out guys they are cheating on you with a movie eh eh I'm a werewolv auuuuu and they are the real machos. Kick vampires anytime. :))

But nothing takes away the brilliant DK and you can't compare to the twilight/harry potter kind of sagas. DK is a real and brilliant movie and it will always be.

Posted by: Dragonnus on November 21, 2009 at 11:55:07

I won't beat Dark Knight's total. You know why? Because it will not get my $10. Good luck.
