Source:Variety
November 20, 2009

Screenwriter Peter Iliff (Patriot Games, Varsity Blues) will pen the live-action big screen version of American Gladiators, reports Variety.

The story, which will feature the Herculean characters as superheroes, will be based on the TV show that first aired in 1988 and has been broadcast in more than 90 countries, with the format adapted for the local market in 14 of them.

Scott Mednick (upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) is producing, and "American Gladiators" creator Johnny Ferraro is executive producing.

They are targeting a release for 2011.

I looked at my ******* in the mirror today. It blew my ****ing mind.

No Offense SH; but what the hell does this have to do with comics, graphic novels, or superhero's in general. I mean I love A.G. as much as the next guy, but how about stories on things like Priest?

Posted by: senorashish on November 20, 2009 at 06:25:03

Wow.

This is the most pathetic idea for a movie I have ever heard.

I mean, it was bad enough that NBC tried to revive this show with Hulk Hogan as host. And now that that show has gone bust people feel it's the right time to make a movie?!

It boggles my mind that there are much more talented movie-makers literally starving and unable to get their foot into Hollywood's door yet crap like "American Gladiators" not only gets a green light but financial backing and a release date.

Oy.

And I'm sorry, but how is this news worthy of being on Superherohype? American Gladiators is not based on a comic book or graphic novel, is it? I'm sure it's not.

What a joke. Whoever thought of this and then the person who greenlit it should lose their jobs. THIS WILL BOMB!

For those of you complaining about why this article is on this site, did you even read it? Seriously. "The story, which will feature the Herculean characters as superheroes."

Boy, this is a dumb idea.

People, we have officially reached the end times.

"The story, which will feature the Herculean characters as SUPERHEROES, will be based on the TV show that first aired in 1988 and has been broadcast in more than 90 countries"

Come on people, if you think you're good enough to tear into the project, it's backers AND SHH because you don't like the idea of the movie...at least READ the article before tearing into it...

Superheroes and we are on SUPER HERO Hype...go figure right? And this is not the worst idea for a movie ever. I see it very much like Mortal Kombat. Though I must admit, I think it will be about as good as Dragonball Evolution (cringe)...

Leave these fine people that bring us our nerd news alone.

Does this mean Hulk Hogan will be in it too....LMAO

This is really reaching here for any type of movie. Like the thoughts of a view master also being developed into a movie...which it is.

They need to make a Battle Toads movie.

Posted by: caabrae on November 20, 2009 at 11:10:48

This reminds me of Prostars. Do you remember Prostars? It was an 80s Saturday morning cartoon which starred Bo Jackson, Wayne Gretzky and Micheal Jordan as superhero-athlete-crimefighters! Micheal had super inflatable pumps and I think Wayne had exploding hockey pucks! This should be every bit as good as that show! And It's no stranger then the announcement they made back in 2008 that Ridley Scott would direct a film based on Monopoly! Hey we've about exhausted the superhero vaults, why not sports and games huh? Maybe Quentin Terantino can direct a big budget version of "Deer Hunter" or maybe Guy Ritchie can tackle "Curling: First Sweep!

This has C.R.A.P. written all over it!!!
However, I'll be in line for it on opening day. :D

Posted by: sigh on November 20, 2009 at 11:12:06

Not AG.

What they need to do is make a cool fantasy movie based on "Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light"

Posted by: MisterFantastic on November 20, 2009 at 11:12:19

Awful. Just awful. Is Zap going to shoot Nerf guns at Hellga?

Posted by: MrSubconscious on November 20, 2009 at 11:13:11

If they're gonna make a film adaptation of American Gladiators, they could at least make a film adaptation of WMAC Masters! ! That show was kick A S S !

Posted by: sarasbigdaddy on November 20, 2009 at 11:13:37

This is what happens when Hollywood TRIES to show that they don't have to REHASH anything or REBOOT anything...

They get lame ideas like this...There are TONS of writers out there but from what I have gathered from my experience in the business...its a good old boy network full of butt slapping and false deals. They will take someone who cant hardly write anything good anymore and give them a nod over someone with an extraordinary idea...

And by the way...they are still going to try to develope a movie based on Monopoly.

Epic fail.

It would be a little less embarrassing just to do a Running Man re-make.

Posted by: mdschwartz31 on November 20, 2009 at 12:34:23

When I was a kid in 1988, I thought it would be cool to see a Superhero movie of the American Gladiators, kinda like they did the All-Stars cartoon with Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson.... but now, I could give to flying flips about this.
