Lawrence and St. John to Adapt Sgt. Rock
Source:Heat Vision
November 10, 2009

Heat Vision reports that Sgt. Rock, based on the WWII hero from DC Comics, will be directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) from a script by Chad St. John (The Days Before).

Joel Silver, who has been steering the project for nearly 20 years, is teaming with Akiva Goldsman, who recently boarded as producer, to bring the project to the big screen via Warner Bros. Silver Pictures' Andrew Rona also is producing, and Weed Road's Kerry Foster is executive producing.

Sgt. Frank Rock was the leader of his infantry unit, Easy Company. He first appeared in a 1959 issue of "Our Army at War." In 1977, the comic was renamed "Sgt. Rock" and ran until 1988.

Good news. This could be an awesome movie.

And I might still be first. Maybe not. Depends on how slow I type this. Naw. I can't be first anymore, can I?

This is great news. Sgt. Rock is an icon in DC's war genre.

The only problem with the movie for now is the WB trying to put the history for these days...I REALLY hope if DC resolve this problem.

With all of the real interesting characters in DC's stables, why in the name of sanity are they giving us Sgt. Rock? If they wish to keep their main tentpole characters away from the big screen for now, fine. At least give us films of characters we will enjoy seeing. Some suggestions off the top of my head are Spectre, Phantom Stranger, Creeper, and The Question. Hell, if they really want to give us a war film, how about the War That Time Forgot series? At least we get some dinosaurs with our GI Joes.

...or Haunted Tank for that matter!

America loves War.

At first, I could see this being a loser to a film like The First Avenger, but I think it'll be done as a sort of remake of older WWII films that came out in the 50's, 60's and 70's (The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape, Where Eagles Dare, ... maybe even Saving Private Ryan ... etc.) That way it'd just be a war movie thank "pays homage" to those classics while not being as serious as SPR.

I love the idea of Sgt. Rock, but from what they are saying they are taking him out of WWII, I am very reluctant about that. They are putting him in the future and do something like GI JOE???

Zac Efron would make a stunning Sgt Rock...

Will it be good and would it be any different. From all of the other war movies already out there.

Unfortunately, folks- it's not set in WWII anymore- but sometime 'in the future'.
Apparently they don't reckon audiences much like war films anymore, though they quoted Inglorious as the exception.
Far as I'm concerned- it's no longer Sgt Rock AT ALL!

Posted by: meanz on November 10, 2009 at 14:47:03

This should star Sgt. Slaughter and The Rock.

Posted by: leagueofone on November 10, 2009 at 15:39:25

They are setting this in the future.

They are taking a WWII soldier and turning it into a sci-fi project.

Why even bother choosing a WWII comic to adapt if you don't intend to do a WWI film?

Can you say, these people are profoundly stupid? I can.
