Mark Millar to Direct Superhero Movie
November 1, 2009
Mark Millar, who created the comic books that Wanted and the upcoming Kick-Ass were based on, has announced that he is lining up a superhero movie that will mark his directorial debut. He posted the following on his official forums:
Bet you didn't see THAT coming, laddies and lassies!
But this is one of several big surprises planned for next year and you'll hear a bit more about this in February when we start to release details. What is it? Who is it about? Well, that's all a secret for now, but I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with comics when I work in cinema. I never want to be a studio bitch and go in there pitching for them to love me. The closest I came to this was a couple of calls regarding Superman, but pretty much none of my plans ever revealed as I didn't like the idea of anyone nicking them.
Similarly, I don't like the idea of asking for funding and justifying scenes with the money-men so I'm doing what Matthew Vaughn did with Kick-Ass and just making it outside the system with private investors. The financing is all secured and the movie stands or falls on how good I can make it, doing what Matthew did and just selling it once completed.
As you can imagine, I couldn't be more excited. More as it happens, but this might just beat out War Heroes and American Jesus as my follow-ups to the Wanted and Kick-Ass movies. Have two other pictures about to go into development (and Wanted and Kick-Ass 2, of course), but I think you need to scare the Hell out of yourself every once in a while and something totally new like directing should do the trick.
Which comic or graphic novel do you think he should direct?

Sounds cool...I wonder if it's something he did or another property. Doesn't sound like Superman though...Damn!

Well he's made it abundantly clear he's more interested in film than comics. Which is fine by me, because all his comics have sucked from Civil War onward. It'll be much easier to ignore his film work.

Good, sounds very interesting. Mark Millar is very talented, loved what he did on Superman: Red Son and the Superman: Animated series comics. I was very interested in knowing what he would have done with a superman movie (you can so tell that he had much love and respect for the superman character), especially after the craptastic Superman movie we just had.
Anyhow, hope he succeeds, especially b/c of the route that he decides to take it on. I truly have a hate for Studio movie execs in Hollywood, I really hope he hands it to them and we see more movies made like this.

wow incredible. i am sure he will do a fantastic job as long as they give him enough freedom.

He said he is making it on his own and going to pitch it. I don't see it being a big name then. Maybe the Maxx or if its a DC or Marvel project, someone with no powers like the Green Arrow.

i Can see it being The Spirit all over again....smh

if it ain't a hero i know of via marvel or dc, and just some dude like he made aka who ever, then i say whatever

Wouldn't he just make up his own character? That'd be my guess. He's a shameless self-promoter and exaggerator, so who knows. I'm not a fan, but maybe film will suit him better than comics have. He seems to be an idea man that has trouble with execution, especially in dialogue.

The Authority!... it's high time that comic book be translated to the big screen. I know fanboys would like to see it , with Millar at the helm.

It's not going to be a Marvel or DC movie. DC (Warner Brothers) owns the rights to all their films, except those previously loaned out to studios. Marvel (Disney [grrr]) owns the rights to all their films, except those previously loaned out to other studios. Millar stated this isn't a studio project, so there is just no legal way he could have access to any characters from the Big Two. Could be any others, ranging from Image to IDW to Kitchen Sink to Oni, but there's no chance of it being one of the Big Two's characters.

Who?
Posted by: Heart of Justice on November 2, 2009 at 04:28:42
He's Directing the Avengers Movie.
Mark my words.

I kind of agree............it could be the Superman reboot.
I think the other stuff in there is just to confuse us.

If he directs the Avengers and brings the Ultimates to the screen verbatim, I'd be stoked. Please don't bastardize the concept for the sake of a payday or your own ego Mark. If you wonder what i am talking about look at Wanted or The Spirit.

Oy! *slaps head, rubs eyes with thumb and index finger*
Did we not learn anything from "The Spirit"?
THE MORAL OF "THE SPIRIT": Do not let comic book writers direct movies, because they do not know the difference between what works on paper and what works on film.
Frank Miller is the epitome of this.
And what is it with all of these people saying that he's going to direct the "Avengers" movie or some other big project like "Shazam!" and what not? Would anyone with a sane mind trust a comic book writer with the directorial efforst in major multi-million dollar films like those? NO!

1) This will not be a Marvel or a DC film because he said he is doing this outside the system. 2) He is a douchebag to think he is going to have as much freedom and creative control over the film because even if he does it outside the system any major studio who picks it up can demand changes to it. 3) He really needs to get over his own ego cause his work sucks.

I'm guess he already started setting up his green screens.
Posted by: dandman on November 2, 2009 at 07:24:08
Please keep this no-talent hack as far away from Superman as possible!!!
Wanted was an AWFUL movie & I'm sure Kick-ass will follow suit. Let him screw-up one of his one horrible ideas leave established characters alone!!
