Don Cheadle on Starring in Iron Man 2
October 31, 2009
Moviefone chatted with Don Cheadle at the Darfur charity event "Ante Up for Africa" outside Los Angeles on Thursday about playing James Rhodes/War Machine in Iron Man 2. Here's a clip:
"I think the character that I play, my CGI character worked as much as I worked," reveals Cheadle, who plays Col. Jim Rhodes and War Machine in the movie. "The stuntman worked as much as I worked. It's a huge undertaking. It was great. It was a really different experience than I have worked on before. Robert [Downey Jr.] is a great guy to work with. Jon Favreau, everybody is quality. It's a lot of fun, the series."
You can check out more of the interview here. Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7.

suck to see Terrence Howard go but I'm positive Don will do an excellent job. I'm Looking forward to what I'm sure is gonna be another badass Iron Man movie.

True, the one silver lining in Howard being replaced is that he was replaced by one of the few actors that can live up to his talent.

I sensed a lot of PR talk there. As usual.

Obviously he's lying through his teeth, As CGI does remove alot of the workload. but ah well, I think most of us are stupidly excited to see this movie anyway.
I don't think Cheadle is the best for the role look wise, but talent wise he is arguably fantastic and will make good in the role. I, As with most people are just bitter to see Howard go, as I found him way too perfect for the role.

I like Cheadle so stop your B#***ing about Howard...and move on.

I'm sorry but I'm so glad he is replacing Terrence Howard. He was the one thing I didn't like about the first IronMan movie and I'm not alone on the. He is an ok actor but he was no Rhody. Can't wait to see the movie thou. Looking forward to finding out the villains, I know the Business man and Whiplash, but there has to be someone else to have both Ironman and Warmachine. I heard Hulk was going to be in it but I don't know if thats true.

yea i'm tired of changing actors midway through a franchise because it is frustratingly distracting and breaks continuity.......but cheadle is a great actor nonetheless...but terrence howard is good to dont know why there were complications in keeping him, im sure a deal couldve been worked out they just didnt have the patience...........i mean the dark knight switched on roles with rachel dawes character but that movie was nothing short of spectacular....but still because of two different actors, they seem like two different characters in both movies, like the rachel in TDK was a different love interest in batmans life from the Rachel in BB....stick to the actors u start out with!.........i mean if they wanted to go with don cheadle, they should've cast him in Iron Man 1 as well instead of an actor that wasnt going to satisfy the expectations of the studio execs.

That is truly cool .

He probably doesn't do alot of his own stunt work. I like Don as an actor, but I remember him saying he had to try to get into shape because his War Machine suit weighed about 65-70 lbs. Mickey Roarke didn't do alot of his stunts in his full suit either. He said that it was heavy around 65lbs. and cut into his shoulders when he wore it. So, his stunt men did alot of his work also. I think Robert is actually the only one that does most of his own stuntwork because he is used to the weight of the Iron Man suit, at 65-70lbs. He does alot of strength training, martial arts etc. on a daily basis though, but even Robert calls his The Iron Maiden. However, I would guess that Don didn't do many of his own stunts. He didn't look built up very much for it at all. Robert and Mickey are always in fantastic shape. I can't wait to see Robert and Mickey go head to head though. That's going to be fantstic!

Sometimes you get an actor/actress that are great matches to bring the comic book character to life. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Robert Downey (Iron Man), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier)...they are the characters personified. Terrence Howard wasn't even close to what Rhodes' should have been. Don Cheadle isn't either (Rhodes should be taller and with more build), but Cheadle is a much better actor than Howard. If the writing is as great as the first movie, then this will a movie worth watching. It'll be a shame to just put something together hastily just because of the popularity. Look what happened to Xmen 3 and Spiderman 3.

@ Nelson
Terrance Howard got greedy and wanted to renegotiate his contract after he saw how much money it made. They all signed a 3 movie deal contract up front and he should have honored it. He let his greed get the better of him.

GoodLuck Don

Jon F. has stated before that Cheadle was their original choice for Rhodey, but he was unavailable at the time.

Cheadle sounds a bit detached. I wonder if he just phoned it in for the paycheck? RDJr and Favs plan and put their heart and soul in to this franchise. I guess it's natural for others to need to do their job and back off. Too many cooks spoil the broth.

^^ We should all be thankful...

I'm excited to see what Cheadle will bring to the character. Terrance Howard seemed like he didn't really care to much about the role and he was payed way to much money to be in the movie in the first place. Based on the last movie and the cast for this one I am certain that it will rock our socks off.

Cheadle is good actor, so is Howard, but Cheadle is very non-commanding. He's suppossed to be an LtCol in the Air Force. As for Howard, I thought he was better but honestly, Rhodes should have been played Michael Jai White.

For those of you still pining for Terrance Howard, I give you a quote from Don Cheadle from the movie: "It's me, I'm here, deal with it."
;)

the only reason i miss howard is because he came out in Iron Man 1. i hate when movies don't have the same supporting cast but i do like don as war machine. he shoulda been war machine in the beginning. lol. he's good for the role. just too short.

I hope that Cheadle makes us forget Terrence Howard because Howard was so great as Rhodes. Let's see how Cheadle does better or worse than Howard....

I still hate the idea of Don Cheadle instead of Terence Howard. Well, it is what it is!

I never heard anything about Terrance Howard asking for more money. He never expressed that in his interviews after he got canned. Terrance Howard was the first actor to sign on to Iron Man , that's what most folks forget. He was hot off "Hustle and flow". And apparentlent if I am not mistaken he agreed that Robert Downey Jr. should be given the shot to be Iron Man. So in away if not for Howard there would be no IronMan film as we know it.
Now , the rumor I have heard is that They offered Howard more money than the rest of the cast cause he was first to sign. Then for the sequel they decided they wanted to lower his pay. He said no or his manager did and then he got the boot! The other scenario is that either Howard was a jerk on set or that Favreau was unhappy with Howard's performance and he was dropped. I thought Howard was great, very human and real in the role. Geez, folks every soldier on screnn doesn't have to be the drill sarge in "Full metal Jack".
I always felt Rhodey was rather laid back in the comics, but had street smarts. Someone who didn't like fighting but would if called upon. So I think Howard was great. Im more inclined to think Marvel wanted to lower his pay , because initially they tried to offer both Sam Jackson and Mickey Rourke crap deals. I know they wanted to offer Rourke about $200,000 or atleast that was publicized on this site and others. Both Jackson and Rourke almost walked away from Iron Man 2. Howard had a contract and clearly could not deviate on his end. In his interviews he said he was planning to return. He heard he was getting fired on the news. he said he was disappointed that RDJ didn't stand behind him and that the contract he had wasn't worth the paper it was written on. Marvel still has not admitted publically why they made the switch.
I think Cheadle is great and will likely be fantastic as Rhodey, Howard felt the same, however imo this seems like an unnecessary change and it puts Cheadle in a position of scrutiny which he doesnt deserve.
