Martin Campbell Talks Green Lantern Effects
Source:Empire
October 31, 2009

Green Lantern director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) told Empire magazine (via Coventry Telegraph) they've got their work cut out in bringing the comic book to life.

"It's daunting," he said. "Just the process, something like 1,300 visual effects shots, it's mind-blowing, quite honestly."

Campbell said that a lot of the effects shots work will concentrate on the Green Lantern's power ring. "It's energized by a battery on the planet of Oa, which taps into the willpower of everyone in the universe. From that ring you can form constructs. So if you got into a fight, you could form a giant fist. Or a fighter plane."

Ryan Reynolds will play the title role in the action-adventure, which Warner Bros. Pictures will release on June 17, 2011.

Sweet! Getting more excited everyday.

Sounds Awesome! Nice to know they're actually doing work! Don't be daunted by GL's hugeness, Campbell! Take it one day at a time and give us an amazing GReen Lantern movie!

I can't wait!

This movie is going to kick ass if it's done right.

Big GL fan hope they don't mess the movie up. Still wish they had someone other than Reynolds playing Jordan.

Sounds like Campbell understands how the ring operates. That's good.

Now let's just hope they don't rely on boxing glove gags.

None of you should get your hopes up. This is a D.C. movie remember!! They always come out with crap. Superman Returns. Crap! Batman Begins. Just okay. The Dark Knight. Good, but ended crappily.

I love how misinformed user "Sam_Raimi_" (not the director) is. How trollish.

First off, Batman Begins was well liked and The Dark Knight is pretty much a modern classic. Just 'okay'. Just that it billions of dollars, had an Oscar winning performance, etc.

Second off: Ghost Rider, X3, Fantastic Four. Spider-Man 3.

Thank you for trolling

This movie will be for DC what Iron Man was for Marvel!

Posted by: gunner on October 31, 2009 at 03:49:54

i too amleary of ryan in this role , however he is a good actor and i think warner/dc understand's the gravity of it all.
this has the potential to give iron man a run for it's money, the reason being that batman is too dark and levity factor in the flick's is almost non existant.
plus we need a galactic hero on the screen (it's time)
i have reasonable hope's for this, considering who the director is.
i dont think i will be let down.

One ring to rule them all.......

I have 2 James Bond movies in my DVD colection and both were directed by Martin Campbell. But I agree with D-MAN. I need a trailer or a teaser with some kick ass special F/X.

I hate to say it. Green Lantern may just suck. Martin Campbell is a great director... so I hope I am wrong. Btw Ryan Renyolds as Deadpool is solid... as Green Lantern...um... not quite. The guy from Hangover I could have dealt with quite easily.

I can't really see him as GL. But weirder things have occured. He might be a great Hal Jordan. He might not. But he landed deadpool, and he was in blade 3,another marvel movie. So, it sounds like he know how to handle this heroes roles. I must see a trailer for this movie, I need to now how the Ring power blast look before I commit to this idea, and movie.

I have been a GL fan for many years. I hope the director realizes that this movie could easily be of Star Wars proportions. Also, I think Ryan can pull it off. People need to realize that a lot of actors are capable of changing their style to fit their characters better. They just get typecast often, and that is what is happening with Ryan. Everyone seems to expect him to be the crazy wisecracker.

I am a little wary about Reynolds as well, but I think he can be versatile enough. He can go from witty to serious and back again like in Smoking Aces, and he can do the realistic romantic side like in Definitely Maybe. Aside from him being so popular, he does have an everyman look about him. Best of luck to the production team.....Green Lantern Forever!

Wow that is truly cool i can,t wait to see the green lantern movies in summer of 2011 .

Looking forward to this, it can't be as bad as the crap Marvel has been releasing over the years. Both FF films, Blade Trinity, X3, Ghost Rider, Elektra, Spider-man 3, etc, etc.

This will be great.

Why the RR hate? Did anyone see Adventureland? Not a wise cracker. He played a loser pretending to be somebody. Amityville Horror was a terrible movie but Reynolds was solid. He is an actor. He changes character. Ryan Reynolds is going to be great. I totally believe this is DC's Ironman.

Posted by: Bat Lantern on October 31, 2009 at 07:50:07

So many effect shots, that unless they have a real good budget, I have a feeling that the effects could look quite naff, especially since this isn't batman or superman, there may not be a huge compassion to do the film justice.

I think this movie is going to be awesome, would of preferred Bradley Cooper as Hal Jordan but he said himself that he screwed up his audition. Reynolds will do a great job so I'm not worried lets just hope that the rest of the cast is solid. Jason Issacs would be the best pick for Sinestro.

So which FX house is handling the CGI? Hopefully it'll be Digital Domain given their experience with Avatar.

Posted by: Black_Vulcan on October 31, 2009 at 09:23:40

You know, I can't say that Green Lantern will be great or will suck until I see a trailer, but I see the potential for both. My question is why is Iron Man the standard by which its judged? Its nearly two hours of Robert Downey Jr. doing schtick, wise cracks, and mugging for the camera as he spends most of the movie just building the suit. I hope Green Lantern has more action than that.

Big Summer 2011 cant wait...

Posted by: Omar on October 31, 2009 at 10:15:04

I think this movie is going to rock. I have this image of two GL's (one being Renolds) walking into a Star Wars like Cantina bar in space and Renolds reading a carving on the wall saying "Lucas was here" and his mouth dropping open like...WTF.

Snarky comedy like that would work in this movie. Not filled with it but placed in a few areas in the movie and Renolds can pull that off big time.
