Anthony Hopkins has been cast as Norse god Odin in Marvel Studios' Thor, to be directed by Kenneth Branagh starting January.
Odin is the father of Thor and Loki, to be played by Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, respectively. Natalie Portman is playing Thor's love interest, Jane Foster.
In the movie, written by Mark Protosevich and Zack Stentz, the powerful but arrogant warrior Thor's reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
Paramount Pictures will release the film on May 20, 2011.

Huh.

Ok, so the cast is turning out to be pretty solid. I don't know about that storyline though.

Not who I was expecting.

This movie is becoming less and less interesting to me. Hopkins is a great actor, but this seems like a weird choice for him.

This is going to be great. I can't wait to see everything once it's complete. I'm so thankful that Fox isn't behind this movie...there's no telling what we'd be getting....

Awesome choice. Hopkins rules! Although.. I always imagined The All-Father as being... taller.... lol

What happened to the story that Brian Blessed was playing Odin? That was inspired.

Wow. I can't imagine a better fit. I'm so stoked for this movie. Once Branagh was attached as director I knew it was gonna be something special. I'm still not sold on Hemsworth, but he seems to be a rising star and I have the feeling he'll pleasantly surprise me. But Anthony Hopkins as Odin... wow. Awesomeness. Brooding, thoughtful, intelligent, cunning but weary, belatedly wise, ultimately doomed. Perfect. So happy. *does a little dance*

This cast seems to be like the late 90s NY Rangers. A lot of big names just for the sake of having big names instead of rounding out the supporting cast with the proper players. It also feels like all these big name actors might be trying to hope on the superhero bandwagon before it's officially over. They're not all going to be able to amaze the critics and moviegoers like Robert Downey Jr. and Heath Ledger did.

*hop not hope. It's late and I'm tired.

There are TWO big names in this cast. TWO. Hopkins and Portman. Hardly "a lot of big names just for the sake of having big names"

By Odins Beard! Sounds great.

Thor is just going to be one of those fantasy flicks that no one wants to see anymore.

This could rival TDK. If you want to see what Branagh can do, check out his superb unexpurgated Hamlet film.

Good acting choice but Hopkins is not a Nore God Type. Studios need to reach beyond the selling factor and stick with the comic/ character driven casting that is needed for these mythic roles. Other than off world Marvel Characters Odin is the most powerful, he needs to be cast the same. All God like characters I recall they are voice driven, as all you hear is the voice. Once you see the character it changes your concept of your idea of what the concept of what you think it is to be. Hopkins is not what I thought Odin would be.

All that talent spent on such a lame character.

They still should of had Vincent D'Onofrio reprise the role of Thor... he was awesome in Adventures in Babysitting!!!!! LOL!

Was not the news I was expecting, was hoping that Stellan Skaarsgard (sp?) would nab the role of Odin. Not the prototype for the king of the norse gods, but they must have had their reasons. Here's hoping it will be a good choice.

This is gonna rule! All you naysayers will be standing in line when it comes out. Don't lie...yes you will.

Awesome casting decision!
Now I just want to know who Blessed and Skarsgard are playing...
Posted by: comicfan1129 on October 29, 2009 at 23:00:01
Blessed is probably Volstagg.
